Oh no, not this again, I know, I know. But please humor me.
I'm considering doing an OTW Trafalgar in the 1999 color scheme of the Trenchant. Problem is that I've searched the I-net a great deal and have lots of wonderful pictures and drawings - now if they'd just agree with one another I'd be a happy camper.
I'm especially in the dark (no pun intended) on the forward port side. Is there a lighter shade of gray (grey) there or not sort of in the shape of a lightning bolt? Is this scheme carried over to the starboard side as well?
Does anyone have a source of drawings, official or not, or pictures that may be use?

Look here at this link http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=40120.0 this is how I built and painted my Sheerline Traf as HMS Trenchant

Mark,
Thanks for the link - nice job.
But...
in some of the pix off of the I-net I see some sort of pattern on the forward half of the boat. It's almost like a dark gray or off-black. Maybe it's just a trick of the light or even a revised camo measure.
I have attached two pictures - one of the prototype and one of someone's model. The modeller clearly saw the pattern too.

Renewed rubber sound panels perhaps? They must come off and perish in the unfriendly briney? The fact that the darker areas are at the front where the wash of water would be felt most is logical.
-
Sir,
I believe you've cracked the code - the pattern is due to missing anechoic tiles. I've attached a picture of Trenchant - not in the dazzle camo - but showing her missing a lot of tiles.
Thanks for your keen observation and help.

Not missing tiles they are the location of part of the subs sonar array which are not covered I tiles as far as I am aware. To obtain the look of this I cut out on both sides of the hull a piece then backed it with plastic and to give the affect of a tile free area. The two pictures supplied in the above post show the same pattern on both sides of the sub

Mark,
Are you saying that the difference in color or texture is due to the intentional placement of tiles or leaving them off? So the difference in appearance is not part of the dazzle camo just where the tiles are placed?
Dan

Mark,
If you're right, shouldn't we see a similar pattern in HMS Torbay?

Dan
Yes Basically/apparantly if tiles had been fitted over the sonar array then it would have not worked or been damaged in some way. just had a look for the plans and I seem to have given them away to someone who was doing the same build

going to try and re-upload 4 pics of how I achieved the effect
1st picture shows the cut I made in the port side front doing the same for the starboard side
2nd Picture shows both lightning bolt shapes cut out and backed with plain plasticard.
3rd Picture shows paint job and lightning bolt sonar array to the front just sprayed the same colour (color)as the main hull with the blue and 2 shades of grey applied after

Mark,
Thanks for your time and all the informative pictures.
On the color chart, I have at least 3 different copies of that and no matter how hard I try and no matter what photo manipulation program I use, I cannot tease out any detail from the black forward of the sail.
I see, now, what you're talking about in regards to the sonar array but what I really need are some plans to scribe the array onto a kit I would purchase. I love your idea of cutting out the array and then backing the hole with some sheet plastic.

Guys.......my knowledge of submarines is clearly limited, however based on the premise or assumption that both British and American submarines don't simply play weekday war games but actively provide 24/7 covert intelligence to their respective Governments, if these acoustic overlay panels provide such an important aspect in the reduction of the submarines acoustic signature....would they not need to be replaced on some sort of important schedule?

Tiles lifting off through adhesion failure I believe has been a problem for the RN. Doubtful the loss of a few here and there is going to significantly impact the stealth of the boat. They are replaced I understand as and when is most convenient.
-
If I remember right the Sheerline model came with the sonar array already scribed into the hull don`t know about other manufacturers

Thanks for the video Mark....... your vessel appear highly manoeuvrable to say the least :-))
The sound of the vehicles was not off putting....pity about the stonemason {-)...

I suppose that if a few missing tiles was that important designers would have looked for another method of prevention. Lovely model.
