Title: pre-dred deck fitting
Post by: tghsmith on August 25, 2017, 11:13:38 pm
several of my 1880 to 1900 ships have Archers patented nippers mounted on the deck..basically a cable hawser brake sometime called a compressor.. I have one bad advertising print photo, but would like to get some better info.. seeing these units were UK built I was hoping some here might have something.. thank todd..

Hi tghsmith

I've been trying to find the compressor/nippers in question and this is the best drawing I could find in the Admiralty Manual of Seamanship Volume 1:1915 edition. If I had an earlier edition which isn't easy to get perhaps the exact nipper would be in there with drawings and an explanation on how to use it.

Now I've just seen something about Bullivant nippers whilst looking for compressors. Give me an hour and I'll find that book again.

In the book  A Ship Modelshipmakers Manual there is a picture of a Compressor cable stopper which is basically two upright pieces of metal and a pivot arm that goes over the top to lock the cable. Another version is when the pivot arm is tightened on the cable by a handle at the end of a threaded rod.
I  built at 1/96, a model of Atlantis for a client and these items  are in my on=line shop as JRH 322 and sold as pairs

John, not quite the type needed, which is OK, because I would be really bummed if I had missed them as I had just placed an order for 3 frets of stanchions.. the Minneapolis is going to swallow up lots of stanchions!!!

I googled for anchor cable compressors and came up with these. The one with the cable going around the single bit with the bar through, I have seen pictures of on old capital class vessels and wondered how it was used, now I can see in the picture, suspect it was used for hanging of anchors etc.
