Hi,
I don't know whether this is an ESC or a radio matter, so here goes.
I'm finishing a small Vic Smeed runabout for next Mayhem. It's powered by 2 basic jet drives and 2000Kv brushless motors.
I purchased 2 basic ESC's from Hobbyking, installed them and powered them up with a single battery with the receiver wires connected to the throttle on the Rx. via a Y-lead and yes, I did remove one of the red wires after going through the set up individually.
Radio was a basic 2.4 set.
Started once and then refused to co-operate.
The channel was live when tested with a servo.
I thought, OK, they're faulty or burnt out or sommat, so fitted 2 different ESC's from fleabay.
Same result.
Idiot, shouldn't have bought cheap.
However, I then changed the Rx to a 40Mhz Futaba and used my old and trusted setup.
Bingo - All worked perfectly for both sets of ESC's both on Lipo and NiMh
Am I doing something wrong?

Does your 2.4g set have digital trims or old school sliding trims? It just might be something to do with your transmitters neutral position setting on the throttle stick. Some modern brushless speed controls wont work if your throttle trim position is to far off of neutral. I have come across this with a number of RC Brushless cars. Your older 40mhz set will have sliding trims, this might just be where the problem lays, don't ask for a better explanation than that, I aint got one ok2

Discount the batteries..volts are volts wherever they come from Deacs? - SLA - ni-cad's or lipos it dont matter O0
after that i don't have a clue...I think it's the radio gear, 40mHz ok but not the 2.4GHz..it's there somewhere. O0

Some of the new Esc. have a failsafe and need the throttle stick to be moved to a certain position before the Esc. will start. This is because most Esc. were designed for model aircraft, and you needed to make sure the props only start when you want them too.

Some TXs need to be "armed" by waggling the throttle stick after the TX is switched on but preferably before the RX is switched on.
That, and the ESCs probably want a valid neutral signal before they will play. Assuming forward only, that would be stick fully back, not so much trim as to put it out of range, and servo f/r set to what the ESC expects. Going between Futaba and other makes creates its own problems - Futaba prefer their own unique version of signal logic which results in the servo reverse often needing to be in the opposite position.

You don,t say what 2.4 radio you were using, did you try re - binding your radio?
My spectrum dx6i has failed to run the motors at times, re - binding did the trick.

I have a Quanum TX & Rx which fails to co operate from time to time and that is down to it "losing" the bind, for some very strange reason. Try rebinding and try again :-))

Hi all,
Radio is an Ikonik from Anglia Model Centre in Gorleston.
Yup, I've tried rebinding and that all works as it should.
I'll try the 'waggling stick' approach later on and adjusting the trim to see if that makes any difference and will report further, meanwhile does anyone have an old Futaba 40meg suitable for an old 6EXA system? Only need 2 channels including throttle (Channel 3 of the 6)

I think it must be all of you who contributed to the solution or part at least.
I reset the trims AND did a lot of wiggling of the stick and all works now. Whether it's a permanent solution I don't know but it works in the bath!
