I visited The Imperial War Museum (London) yesterday. I've wanted to go there ever since I saw it featured on Blue Peter many years ago. (For those abroad who have not heard of it, Blue Peter is a BBC children's TV program that has been running for many many years. It was a big part of my childhood as I'm sure it was for a lot of people of a certain generation). I can highly recommend this Museum. I spent hours there wandering around and didn't manage to see it all. Some of the exhibits are very thought provoking and the holocaust display is a very moving experience.
On the way there, I saw a Blue Plaque with the name of a sea faring gentleman of some notoriety on it.
There are some lovely models on display around the museum and apparently there are some on display in the cafe but, I ran out of time and didn't see them. That's my excuse for going back in the not too distant future.

Bligh gets such a bad rep. He was not the sadistic martinet that is portrayed in the movies, in fact, he was considered "lenient" compared with other captains. He had come up through the "hawsepipe" having been enlisted since he was seven so wasn't a neophyte playing at being captain.
He sailed 4,164 miles with only a Quadrant and Compass and no Chronometer with the loss of only one man. Hell of a Sailor!

Is that model of the San Demetrio the one that was used in the movie?

Hi TailUK,
Yes it is.
I've never seen the film so, will be trying to put that right at some point.
Ian.

I also went to the museum recently. HMS Hercules is a splendid model just a pity that the superimposed aft turret has been knocked off its mounting - it looks very strange!
Nice museum and well worth a visit
