Title: WW1 Minesweeping winches
Post by: raflaunches on December 02, 2017, 08:55:01 pm
hi everyone

Does anyone know of a source of either photos or plans of a WW1 or possibly pre-WW1 minesweeping winch? A winch was fitted to HMS Adamant when she was built in 1911 and the plans just show a vague outline with hardly any detail. I’ve had a good look through my collection of books and drawings and only come with another vague outline drawing on the HMS Saltash plans. We’ve bought some winch kits to modify or at least use the parts for the Adamant but it’s proving difficult to make it without some clearer drawings or pictures.
I’ve found plenty of photos of WW2 and post war winches so were the earlier winches similar in design and layout that it wouldn’t be noticeable or not? {:-{

Can you pop an image of the plan up so we can match type it to photos/kits/winch types in civilian use??

How big do you think the winch was compared say with winches seen on merchantmen or trawlwers or even say a puffer??

I’ll take a picture of the drawings so you can see the outline. I found a picture on the internet of the builders model of HMS Snapdragon which shows a rather snazzy looking minesweeping winch but is it accurate or just a representation?

Here are the original ship's plans version of the minesweeping winch, they have a similar layout to the builder's model of Snapdragon but minus the rollers which guide the sweeping wire.

It is logical that the winches are the same basic design with bolt holes to fit the sweep rollers or other fittings.

I suppose it might be an 'Admiralty design', but does that mean it is beefier than a civilian design and so not to be seen on Fishing vessels etc?
