For a side project I'd like to know if these chinese V4 steam engines sold on ebay are worth their money.

And how big the boiler must be .... I have no experience with steam engines.

Knocking ten bells out of it on air with no lubricant probably doesnt help them last (as in video) but their stuff is very well made - and it comes with a feed pump so boiler size is not an issue, all depends on your size of prop, how fast you want to run etc, and with inlet pipes of 3mm od its not going to be using a lot of steam. I would opt for a 4" dia horizontal boiler but a 3.5" might do.

Thanks a lot for you information .... so I will think about buying one .... :-))

Danielle.......
You have said ...."For a side project" ....could I suggest that any steam engine plant [power & design] be balanced to the type of the hull?.....
Tug boat?....or Speed Boat?...and also what scale?

I know I put my question about the V4 steam engine in the wrong section but only here I may get some good informations.
My project is land based .... a steam powered Jeep 6x6 .... as seen on discovery channel .... the serie is called ROAD HAUKS.
I'd like to have something steam powered that can easely be used with no need to travel somewhere. Ride-on steam locomotives are too heavy and very expensive. Steam RC-boats are nice but you have to drive to a lake to play with it. A steam powered car can be used just in front of the door or on my balcony ....
Here a video of the original .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeOflJVCThQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeOflJVCThQ)

His wheel arches arent going to last long, thats one very expensive jeep! I would be very interested to follow your build of this and would be happy to offer any support you may need in the boiler department. Its going to need to be a good gearbox ant the end result is likely to be heavy - what overall size are you looking at?

for more inspiration, youtube prallplatte. some weird and wonderful rc steam on his channel.

Thaks a lot to both of you .... I knew the Prallplatte Youtubechannel already. :-))
I am not shure with scale it will be. The one I have at home is in 1/10 scale which is maybe too small for this project. I will have to buy the V4 steam engine first and then build the Jeep and specially the boiler around it .... http://www.fourwheeler.com/features/1707-loco-hauk-steam-powered-6x6-jeep-jk-built-by-kenny-at-2017-easter-jeep-safari-in-moab/ (http://www.fourwheeler.com/features/1707-loco-hauk-steam-powered-6x6-jeep-jk-built-by-kenny-at-2017-easter-jeep-safari-in-moab/)
If I look at the pictures of the original, the V4 used there http://kimmelsteam.com/keenengine.html#engine (http://kimmelsteam.com/keenengine.html#engine) is much smaller than the original petrol V6.
I have many questions and ????? but I will find a solution with your help.
