Title: Which channel does what?
Post by: georged on September 15, 2007, 08:26:12 am
Good day people,

I am new to the game, but now have a tug called "Smit Dogrough". In an effort to improve it I have modified it to 2 ESCs instead of 1, as it is twin screw. I bought a new Hi-Tec Laser 6 40Mhz FM system, but am having difficulty in sorting out the channels. I enquired thru' the company I bought it from, and the instructions were to fiddle about until I find what I want. I also sent an e-mail to Hi-Tec in Ca. but have not yet received a reply . The streering gear works on channel 1, and the port motor on channel 3, but I cannot get the stb'd motor to work wherever I put it. The ESCs are Mtronic Viper Marine 20s which supply 4.8 volts to the receiver. I was told to cut the red lead on 1 ESC, taking care not to damage anything else, and have taped up the 2 loose ends. What I need now is some help in figuring out why the thing is not doing as it is told. Can anybody help?

first of it doent realy matter what channel does wot. whatever suits you.
check everything is working. take the ESC out of the equastion for now. plug in a receiver battery to receiver. use a servo and check that each channel is working. plug it into 1, then 2,3,4,5,6,. that proves the tranny and receiver are working. the obvious set up for the ESC is to have them on the up and down channels, (forward/back). now, welcome to the world of ESC. use one ESC, pluged into ch2. check it works. plug it into ch3, check it works. if all ok, take it out and plug in the other ESC, same procedure. Let us know if this dont work and i'm sure the collective wisdom will help you out.
the secret is to be methodical and try to eliminate the obvious, which never is, and/or find what does work and where.
incidentally, have you checked all the batteries are charged?
the other thing is though you are using 2 ESC, only one of them needs to have the red wire connected to the receiver, i never cut it. you wont be able to change it. i always remove it from the plug. lever up the tag gently and pull the red wire out. then you can always put it back.
good luck

Hi Colin,

thanks for that, it sounds like common sense. I assumed that each channel has a purpose. Oh, what a long learning curve!

In the area where I live the norm seems to be channel one (left stick) speed up for forward down for astern and some use it with sprung self centre which is good for beginners as if they let go of the sticks the motor stops. channel 2 right stick left- right .

I actually use down for forward only because my thumb does not work very well.

your right in one way Peter ,but it depends on what transmitter mode you are on as mine was a mode 2 version and others are mode 1 .
All this means is that the throttle stick is on the opposite side depending on the users preference dont think it matters with boats ??.
As for the sticks on ratchets this is my own preference and i agree self centering is a much better way for beginners

though it may state on the transmitter what to assign each stick for,

elevator
aileron
throttle
rudder
gear
flaps

this is primarily for the aircraft users, where the right stick is used like the joystick in a fighter plane, (left - right for roll, forwards - backwards for pitch control), and the left stick being for rudder and throttle.  when used in a marine application it doesnt really matter which stick you put things on, its all down to personal preference, usually if it moves left/right it is more natural to have it on a stick that goes left/right, but doesnt have to be so!

My Yamato's motors are on right stick due to the mixing on the transmitter, the other boats are on left stick.

Is this what you were looking for?  http://lee.org/flying/LASER4and6.pdf (http://lee.org/flying/LASER4and6.pdf)
(Not much use is it!)

The Laser 6 has a mixer built in (V tail & Elevon) but I'm not sure if they are any use to model boats.... experiences anyone?
BTW. My Laser 6 came with a "dual conversion" 40MHz receiver and needs special crystals.  >:(

This is one suggested stick layout for twin motors.

I was going by the fact that a lot of boaters still go go for a cheap two or three channel set as thats all they need, its only of late that multi channel sets from the likes of HIteck have become available at such a low price. Peter

Hi Colin,

I got the steering gear working on 1, and the port motor on 3. I tried the stb'd motor on 2, which I think is right, but after resetting the ESC I got full astern on zero, and was able to stop the motor when pushed to full ahead. I rather suspect that i have a duff ESC!  Expensive stuff, I think i will take up drink, as it must be cheaper,

regards,

George

Hi Colin, I was dealing with what I thought was a broken M Tronics ESC, but it just needed to go through the setting up routine carefully and it works OK now.
While playing with it I reversed the stick control from the ESC and then put it back to 'normal'.  They are quite nifty little units.

Hi everyone,

yes, I think it's that funny set-up button on the Mtronic ESC causing the problem now, 'cos I'm colour blind! I'll need to wait until my wife finishes darning my socks and ask her to help,

George

Hi there,

the laser 6 is marked for flyers, but they have used the same casing for marine, to save money. Still no clues in the instructions for which channel does which job. I am learning, but slowly,

George
