I think its about time I started to show my build off the HMS Clyde 1/48th, its taking a long time but I am getting their. As you can see I have done all the hull work cutting openings and fixing props shafts etc. she will have working bow thruster and stern thruster. running on two electric motors 24v
Starting the super structure from A3 Plasticard 2mm sheets taken measurements from the plans this being the first time I have done this. pictures to follow once I remember how to down size them.
-
Hi Stuart22
I've completed HMS CLyde at this scale, if you need any help please let me know.
If you do a search for 1/48 HMS Clyde & Build Update HMS Clyde, on this forum you will see some pics of my build which may help.
-
Hi T888 we met at Netley Marsh still trying to get pictures loaded, I've been working so not had much time hopefully soon. its coming along fine. I have seen your model and taken picture's looks amazing cheers.
-
Hi Stuart22,
That closes the loop. :-))
I've used Speed 850 motors running on 12volts and the model performs well, so you may not need 24v
-
I run my (sister ship) HMS Mersey on a pair of MFA 800 motors works for me on 12v, did try the 850's but didnt notice that much difference apart from current draw.
They do make great boats on the water at 48th scale.
Jay
-
The only reason for 24v is I have had the motors and speed controllers from Action for some time just need to use them. pictures will come soon to make this interesting %% dam annoying. <*<
-
Hi i have a clyde which is 80% finish but some picture would be helpful i try to look for yours on mayhem but could not find then
thanks
peter
-
Hi Peter,
Were you looking for Stuart22 or mine ?
-
Sorry guys I will try again very soon to get the pictures on. I have been working on her in the last few days all railings done steps done, nothing is fixed yet just making sure all fits correctly.
-
I don't mind who ever got some picture under hel deck would help me
peter
-
lets try this
-
It works so here we go will post rest tomorrow.
-
all fittings are not fixed yet just pushed in to place please see more picture.
-
more to see
-
and so on
-
Thank you for the picture there a get help
-
Gents,
Good job Stuart22, hope the picture you have of mine at Nettley will help you in this good build log.
I'll update the posting of my HMS Clyde with some more close details of the model as I don't wish to interfere with this build log. This may help you both.
-
Thanks T888 that would be great. phew more pictures up to date now.
-
I will be using the fittings that come with the kit. using the davits sets these are a project in them self's and do look good more detail to add yet see below, the gun kit is not bad to but needs some work. I did get the stations made of stainless steel these are excellent and strong. the helideck surrounding gates will hopefully be working and also round the gun deck. looking forward to final painting main hull and deck.
-
I have decided to have the superstructures remove separately in 3 parts this will allow me to have all electrics in each section hopefully. top section all mast lights and radars. second cabin lights and bottom section working gates gun deck lights.
-
phew pics of inside the hull still lots to do.
-
Thanks for the picture a great help
peter
-
Decided to cover forward sides with 0.5mm plasti card for a smooth finish and to fix the angled supports with liquid weld and will do the same on each main side deck walk ways.
-
After the sides and fairleads are fixed I will be fixing 5mm strip around bow top as plan shows.
-
Very nice! These ships look impressive in 1\48 scale. Are the fitting self made, Sirmar other?
-
You can see the fittings list on the Sirmar sight I know T888 made a lot of his own but I don't have the patients, with a little adjustment and tidying the fittings look good. I have had the model for about seven years I think, where It has been in my attic and I started the build two years ago when I had finished my last projected, its been a long time as work gets in the way, but I only work on it when I feel like it.
-
Bit more detail added still not fixed yet need to make sure it looks correct, once I get this completed I will be able to spray hull and deck looking forward to that. ;)
-
On to doing the hand rails around super structure a very kind friend gave me some brass stanchions for which I could cut to hold the rail perfect fit for 1mm rod used, as you can see I can make two from one. it was becoming a concern for what to use so big thanks to Dennis Ramsden, :-)) again I will not fix yet as they will need tiding up on the ends and also will need to spray paint them.
-
completed hand rails still need to spray paint them.
-
Worked on the plat forms for each rescue boats very difficult to see were they exactly go
-
Stuart,
These are pic I used , may help
-
At Last painting the hull has started, I will post more pictures when complete with water line.
-
What paints / sprays are you using? :-)
-
I Am using good old Humbrol tins and air brushing it on, it has taken 4 tins reducing 50/50 using enamel thinners so far.
One more tin should do it, it may take a long time but the finish is good.
-
Made a decision to get the hull Finished as the weather is perfect for spraying and I did not want to get held up in traffic if I decided to go out some where.
Sprayed water line with Alclad black primer went on a treat, then decided to paint deck, this I dab on with a half inch brush 50/50 diluted which gives that nonslip surface but smooth Finnish, again it takes time and needs three coats but has a good effect. pictures show first coat and will have to cut in with small brush around detail parts.
-
Very Nice! :-)) :-))
-
Hi Stuart, Nice job with the paintwork, like you I have spent some of the weekend with the airbrush, I'll post some images later.
Unfortunately I did spend today stuck in the holiday traffic >:-o Jon
-
She's starting to come together all parts push fitted as I have to varnish deck.
-
Hi Stuart,
Re your initial comments in message 1, it's your hobby so do what you are comfy and happy with. It is only your business how you build your model, and by that it has come along really nicely. The railings and ladders look really good, and I like the look of the paint job.
We can but critique, we cannot dictate :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) Keep up the goodwork.
-
Ian,
Fully agree with you last line.
Stu, Will we see you at Nettley Marsh this year ?
-
Those stairs to the lifeboats - in a rush remember to duck as you get to the top. {-)
-
All deck painted and flight lines done and working on more details.
-
Looking really really good :-))
Jay
-
The quality of the paint work looks absolutely fantastic, really enjoying seeing this build come together.Alex
-
Thanks for the comments guys I am enjoying the build, lots still to do and enjoying it.
I have been thinking about making a box to carry it in, I will probably make it the same way I carry my 1/16th Severn were it sits at water line level in the box with sea affect and carry handles its a safe way to store and transport how do you display and carry your boats around six foot long also don't want to carry a coffin around with me.
I also would like to display it on a stand that sets it high as you always look down on to the boats they can look superb a bit higher letting the public see underneath.
T888 I will hopefully be at Netley.
-
Made the Mast this weekend
-
Hello Stuart,
I can imagine that wasn't a five minute job %) , been working on the main mast for my T42 build and it's taking ages to finish. The build is looking really great. Jon
-
Making the carry and display box for the Clyde and made a box for the mast section to keep it safe. bit more detail to the mast section. excuse the hammer handle just there to keep it upright till I set the Clyde to water line level and it will have sea effect round the ship.
hoping to get some wiring done soon so I can test her in the water.
-
All most finished the box and she is set at water line and I feel better that she sits in some thing save. bit more detail to top section. I will also have some cut outs on the side so you can see underneath.
-
Cracking model of the Clyde. I always loved the batch 1 rivers and Clyde was something extra special with a flightdeck shame she is coming to the end of her career with the RN unless something drastically changes.
-
Hi All did the water test this weekend and yes I have a leak, started to put weight in to get her down to water line then in it came I thought I had made a good seal round the thruster shows what thought did <:( I will have to sort this asap.
Just like to say about us modellers how some can be kind and thought full T888 gave some of his casting he made for his Clyde to help me complete my Clyde, what a kind chap he is :-))
-
Thought I do some thing different a bit of sowing, so have started to do the netting round the flight deck railings and gun deck.
-
Bit more done today
-
Patience + skills = great work.
I guess dedication also comes into it.
Looking good O0
Regards,
Ray.
-
A very neat job in deed, I'm now thinking about my build and could I do the same in 1/72 scale. In the past I've always used brass etched netting, which is great but a little 2 dimensional and not as realistic as I would like. Seeing your work has me thinking, Jon
-
So Stuart22 says.....
"Hi All did the water test this weekend and yes I have a leak" ......yes well... a rather famous receltly built RN Aircraft Carrier developed a similar 9of [sortsl eak on early trials
You are doing a brilliant built & thread....Helipad netting rails on our FFG's always flapped in the breeze.......congratulations :-))
Derek
-
The netting looks good what did you use??
-
Hi Stu,
The nets looking good, this the info of the 1/48 figures I used on my HMS Clyde.Hasegawa X48-5 1/48 US Pilots and Crew Set:B
-
Thanks T888.
Gingyer I used what is called cross stitch material it comes in two scales and think the smaller one would do for a class 1/72 scale ships, the one I used is a little bit to large but not far from scale and it does look better than having brass ones.
I cut them to size then dyed them black with water based paint watered down see pictures. then stitched to the frames and will varnish them to seal.
-
Looks like I might need to visit my mum and see if she still has cross stitch material.
I will need it for my very slowly moving Clyde
-
Hi
This may be of some interest Screen Mesh Net Insect Fly Bug Mosquito Spider (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Grey-Quality-Fibreglass-Screen-Mesh-0-8m-Net-Insect-Fly-Bug-Mosquito-Spider/113160053795?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649) it come in black or grey.
-
Stu, may be to late, but this is a picture of the New nets that the manufactures sent me. ( But after I'd finished my model and which I've updated to the new fit). I did question if the netting would be white when fitted they said it would, but after time at sea more like and off white.
-
So Stuart22 says.....
Mmmm Derek wonder which one that was {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)
Bob

-
Wish I had that picture some time back, that could be achieved but still happy with what I have done although I could still do it as they are not fixed yet but its been a lot of work I shall see. I need to get other bits done for now.
this should help other Clyde builders with ideas.
-
Well that is a brilliant use of material I never thought of using. You’ve inspired me to scrap the etched brass items I was planning to get for my 1/72 HMS Protector project I started a few years back.
-
LoL I recognised the cross stitch material straight away, used it in the past for grilles etc. I thought it looked rather good for you as it has some texture to it which outweighs the thickness of other options.
Looks great.
Rich
-
Finished the railings but not fixed yet.
-
They look great, you've done a great job with the netting. Jon
-
Did a bit more work on the top section, made all of the aerials, connected the radars up. its amazing how much is involved and how long it takes but that's modelling.
-
She flouts and no leaks did the ballast test this week end, this was in our pool we use for kids to have a go at shows. I feel much better now.
-
Bit more detail starting to make the fuelling rig some pictures with the 1/48 figures I will be using and Sea king hele.
-
These individual projects can be challenging its taken me most of the day so far.
-
These individual projects can be challenging its taken me most of the day so far.
... but the end result looks great, thereby making the effort worthwhile :-)
Regards,
Ray.
-
99% Finished fuel rig. just need to paint and add hose. also found a picture of the real thing.
-
Have completed the refuelling rig, started to make the life rafts containers which the Clyde has 8 held on brackets in twos for quick release.
-
Looking good Stu
One lesson I learned with the life raft racks , was that the ones fitted to the bridge wings, are very easy damaged when built from plastic. So I replaced mine with brass parts.
-
Finished the life raft racks just need to tidy and paint and add any rope, straps needed. two bridge wings fitments and two deck fitments.
-
Fitted all life rafts not fixed yet, landing light beam upper deck still to finish not fixed.
-
These images are getting close to viewing the actual vessel %) ...continually, better & even more realistic.....well done Stuart :-))
Derek
-
Thanks for your comments appreciate it, bit more done over the week end landing light bar finished not fixed yet, and brass tie downs on Helli Deck, I have decided to sink them into the deck to make them level, this I have done by punching holes with hole puncher and by fixing some plasticard to the back of the brass tie downs. will have to paint deck again. see pictures think it will work out ok.
-
Very nice build Stuart very realistic :-))
chris
-
Fixed all tie downs just fight lines to paint back on. come up well. I will have four open tie downs to secure the Seaking.
-
Thank god that's done flight line back on. also did some more detail to the netting.
-
Bit more detail, Fire Lockers one each side done and refuelling pipes started
-
Fire pipes done, fuel and water standpipes done not fixed yet need to paint them. steps down front section both sides not sure what you call that part.
-
Absolutely awesome build.
-
Thanks again, Fixed pipe work both sides.
-
Hi All had a brake from the Clyde, started the Sea King Helicopter its a 1.48th scale and have not made a model kit like this for years, trying to think when it was has to be when I was 12ish, all I can say is my fingers are a lot bigger so more difficult for such small parts but getting there. looking to get rotor blades working some challenge that will be any ideas will help.
-
Hi Stu, I used small motors from Precision Micro Motors for the main rotors and some vey small motors out of old HS2 monitors for the tail rotor.
-
and you can get flashing LED's for the id lights
-
Hi all started the two launch boats Pacific 22 Rib and Rigid Raider craft. again these are little projects in them selves, I am using the ones that come with the hull. just getting detail from pictures.
the Seaking is coming along nicely.
-
Bit more done today the Rigid Raider undercoat on ready for painting and lots more detail to add yet. Pacific 22 Rib, again ready for painting then final detail to add. need to know what colour green the Rigid Raider is if any one knows.
-
While things are a bit quiet bit more done on the two boats not fitted. still detail to add little kits in their own right.
-
This is a beautiful model, and like several other builders here, you are recreating reality in a smaller scale, not just modelling.
-
Thanks for the very nice comment appreciate it. just to let you know I will be back with the build soon just tidying up my Speed line Severn, while I have time. :-))
-
Had a bit of time so thought I would tackle the depth gage markings only done one side as I am having to order more thought one pack of each black and white would do.
-
Super sleek isn't she.
-
She is indeed, finished the powered boat davits they are fixed came out well.
-
Got the other side done regards depth gage markings.
-
looks great,
I really need to get myself motivated and get mine finished
-
No doubt about it, she's a beaut! :-))
-
Looking really excellent! Very nicely executed.
Geoff
-
Thanks again for the comments,
Gingyer why have you lost the inspiration to get on with your Clyde and how far have you got.
I made a start on the superstructure gangway lights and flight deck lights today very fiddly pictures soon.
-
I don’t really know....
I actually have the first kit made but for some reason I start working on it and then just run out of energy on the superstructure is nearly all done. I was last painting the hull especially the quarter deck to fit the deck.
Sometimes I just think of selling it, other times I want to finish it.....
-
These lights are taking some time I'm about half way, each one made individually think they look ok.
-
Been trying to think were to put the main switch so decided to put it under the brake water as this can be removed. also have connected a volt meter so I can see how much battery life I have with out taking off the superstructure.
-
Lovely work on the railings and readout displays.
-
Work done on making all the air vents for the water breaker.
-
Hi All,
Done more detail she is coming along nicely seems I am getting there.
-
More pictures
-
Excellent detail work as usual! Photoshop a sky and a bit of sea into the last photo and it would look like the real ship.
-
Had a bit of time to do a little more hope you can see what I have done as its mainly small detail parts, spot lamps / radars / aerials, thinking of starting the figures for her to and get the helicopter finished.
-
Not done to much to hot in the garage I hate this heat, anyway almost finished the life rafts just tidy the lines and ties to do. also started some detail in the main bridge. just thought I would have a play around with this.
-
Trying to get a picture looking through the windows of the main bridge hope you can see what I have done so far still more to do.
-
HI Stuart its lookin very good what with the map on the back wall an the instruments panels nice work is there any glass fitted in the bridge windows ?
chris :-))
-
Hi Chris no glass fitted yet, just took some more pictures of the inside. started the celling on the bridge might as well.
-
THIS is brilliant an very detailed how are you fitting in the glass does the bridge lift off so you can fit it that way ? :-))
Chris
-
Finished the ceiling on the bridge hope you can see in the picture lights and air conditioning cover to do, I will do the seats and people another time.
-
HI Stuart ive just looked right through your whole build an im very impressed with your work on this model NOW a question what R/C will you be useing ?
as at the moment ive got a big model type 23 frigate an i have fitted in 2.4 gig R/C a FUTABA 6 CHA an i have been havin trouble with the model running wild as it lost siganal an i did not think id have this prob but i have an now with other help ive found out the R/C has got its own failsafe built in on chan 3
so im gonna try this today to see if it works ok as in the instuchtions its all a bit vauge an as i like to have my throttle on channell 2 with channel 1 for rudders control as i have not got very good hand cordernation so for me its the main controlls on cha 1 an 2 but today im gonna find out if i can get a seperate failsafe unit to fit in between the R/X AN THE MOTORS AS THATS WHAT I REALLY NEED
all best
chris
-
2.4GHz sets tend not to work with separate failsafe units. These units rely on the receiver completely dropping the signal to the servos when it loses the signal from the transmitter. This is normal behaviour for 27MHz and 40MHz sets but not for most 2.4GHz. If the 2.4GHz has its own failsafe built in then it will continue sending a signal to the servos, the throttle will go to the failsafe position while the remaining servos will hold their position. As far as a separate failsafe unit is concerned the receiver is still receiving a signal so will not do anything. If the failsafe is not on the channel you use as throttle you could try swapping the connections to the sticks, these tend to be plugged into the main circuit board on modern sets. So swapping the plugs for 2 and 3 will give you failsafe on your throttle.
Jim
-
HI Jim well my r/c has a built in failsafe but only works now an again so its ureliable an ive earlyier sent of for a failsafe thats supose to work from 2.4 gig an it was not exspensive so not a lot to lose but thanks for tellin me as if it dont work then i will sell the 2.4 gig r/c 6 cha an go back to the 40 meg at least the failsafe worked on that
chris
-
Hi Chris glad you have got some answers to your question as I have not a clue sorry, all I am using is 2.4 7channel radio and action electronics as I had some I needed to use I have found them to be ok for me I used them in my Komet and never lost a signal but you never know.
I have not done much to the Clyde just having a rest, started to paint the figures that will be on her. just having a go on one to see how I do I will get some pictures on soon.
-
Hi all, Glad to be back and all is safe with you all.
With the weather much better had a chance to do bit more detail, started to put the mast lights on and wire the radars to work, I have decided not to have the lights working as when they blow it can be a lot of work to repair, chickening out more likely.
I may light below helideck deck as I can get to this ok, and main bridge.
Bit of rigging to do and paint the main connecting fuel and water hydrants.
-
Hi all decided to do some glazing on top deck windscreen and bridge windows does take time to fit to correct size. some pictures so far.
-
Made the bridge compass from the picture's I have, and the light code thing each side of bridge not sure what it is called.
Wanted to see how it will look with the figures I will be using on the bridge, they are not fully painted yet. should look ok see below.
-
Bit more done.
-
Sorry missed this one.
-
REALLY fabulus work there with the figures in the bridge looks real very well done
chris :-))
-
Stuart,
This may help with the crest you asked about
-
Thanks Dave appreciate it.
-
Bit more done. Rope reels, Rope to add they just hang on. Crest and badge both sides and front. tie downs for Flag lines each side.
Still lots to do, think I am getting there.
-
Bit more done, rigging not tide down yet and more detail. sorry the pictures are looking the same but there is some changes.
-
Fitted wiper blades, task and a half making these.
-
Hi All bit more done.
-
HI Stuart a fantstic build very well done an if i ever finish my tiger this would be a model i would like to build as in 1/48 th scale there is plenty of scope detail an workin features an with a GRP HULL would save a heck of a lot of work an only two motors i wont then have the trouble ive got now on my tiger but hopefully will work it out
ATB chris :-))
-
Hi All more pictures.
Started to fix the two boats to davits bit fiddly, and more detail.
-
Made the water hydrant's enjoyed that but think they look to new so will have to make them less glossy, I have not fixed them yet as have to do the pipe work underneath, and need to make the power boxes for them if that is what they are called. also side lifting beam.
-
Stuart22 following this build with great excitement one of my project boats to build well done do enjoy your work and detail tassie48
-
Great, clean looking build! :-))
-
Thanks for the kind comments. Thought I would have a go at detailing the gun a bit more and found some pictures to look at. some parts to still finish and tidy.
Pipe work under fire hydrant's complete.
-
Hi All hope your keeping well.
Just an update,
Getting to the end of the build it seems :-) but I do keep finding detail I have missed.
Both fast boats now secured to davits, more detail parts added, anchors need to be fixed and correct size chains to get.
I need to get the Seaking finished and working, the netting rails port and starboard are working ok its getting the end rail to move with them.
Will not get to put her on water till new year it seems as I need to test her again in the club pool now with that extra weight on.
-
She getting there Stu :-))
-
Thanks Dave. Can I ask where you got your anchor chain from I presume it is 1.48th scale.
-
Stu,
I got my chain from Cornwall models, I’ll check the number of link per inch that you will need and get back to you👍
-
Stu,
This is what I used C65405 Brass Stud Link Anchor Chain 5.5 Links per Inch (1mtr)
https://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?WD=chain%20anchor&PN=caldercraft65405%2Ehtml#SID=148 (https://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?WD=chain%20anchor&PN=caldercraft65405%2Ehtml#SID=148)
-
What a gent :-))
-
He is indeed (from what I have heard :-) ) Lovely job especially with those crests. They add little spots of colour amongst the detail and military colours.
-
just some more pictures.
-
stuart22 (https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=9560) HI love your cylde build as when ive finished my tiger build i may go in for the 1/48th hull as its a big scale there is plenty of scope to get things working on her but just like to say brilliant build an please exscuse how this post is laid out as p/c is playing up
chris :-))
-
Hi All more detail done even a little sink with taps, fuel oil and water connection pipes painted had to mix that colour. all loud inhalers done I think.
Looking forward to putting her the water some time soon.
-
Hi your Heli is coming on great just wondering if you can tell me where you got Your micro motors from please as I am finding it difficult to get the rear blades to turn on my Seaking for my HMS Clyde as that seems to be the only way it will work
(stuart qoute )
HI Stuart did you get your mini motors yet ? an have you done anything on fitting them to your chopper
chris :-))
-
Hi Chris, yes I have but not had time to fit one just yet, they are amazing and so tiny.
I've been working on a fire Patrol boat for my club for the children's have a go boats so should work on the Heli soon, I will post pictures but it will not be as amazing as yours as I am not putting lights in it etc.
Cheers

Hi All, thought I would see if I could get the micro motor fitted to the tail of my Seeking works a treat and very quiet. amazing. now I can get on and finish it.
-
Hi All, thought I would see if I could get the micro motor fitted to the tail of my Seeking works a treat and very quiet. amazing. now I can get on and finish it.
WELL Done Stuart just like mine them mini motors fit just nice dont they an are you gona fit a hinge like i did ? but do a better job as mine did not go all the way around but im happy with it but very well done on your tail rotar :-)) an yes they are very quiet
chris
-
Getting on with the Heli still a bit more to do, bit more painting adding the decals and connecting it up. I have decided to make it work independently meaning the switch will be on the Heli able to stand on its own, but making sure it is secured on the deck.
-
HI Stuart the chopper is lookin good but i gather you are goin to fit a small batt inside the chopper an a switch ? an if i was you the chopper needs to be moved in on the fightdeck more if you are goin to sail with it aboard ? but very good all the same :-))
chris
-
HI again Stuart just been studyin your chopper an noticed if im right that have you left out the side canopy windows ? ok2
-
99% Finished the Helicopter works well, very stable with the blades fixed, the button cell batterie that runs it lasts about an hour, the good thing is the main rotors start up slowly then speed up but not to fast.
-
HI Stuart lovely job on the chopper what scale is the ship an chopper ? an can you show where the button cell batt is located ?
chris :-))
-
The Scale is 1.48th both. The Cell battery is in the bottom section of the main body which just clicks out and in with the switch also there see picture.
-
VERY NICE WORK Stuart an well thought out makin the bottom drop out how does it stay in place ? :-))
chrisb
-
Hi the section does just clip back in and stays there. I have put some figures on this does give a scale look.
-
HI Stuart the figures really set the ship off an it looks great im hopein to build this ship when ive finished my tiger so i may be askin you some qeustions :-)) ps does your flightdeck nettin fold down ?
chris
-
Hi Chris yes they do using servos, the only one that is not working is the end section, still working on that one <*<
I do have some ideas.
-
and you can get flashing LED's for the id lights
YES STUART22 I MADE my 1/72 scale seaking work with 2mm ledsan it looked great linkpics below
