Title: XRAD'S LIDAR SCANNER
Post by: xrad on October 08, 2018, 04:16:34 am
Hello All, My latest project. A functioning 'LIDAR' unit. Well, it's not actually a laser, but rather an IR unit.  I used a TFMini IR distance sensor and converted some C++ code for an ultrasonic sensor to now work with the TFMini. Ultrasound sensor only ranged to ~30cm. My IR scanner goes out to 14m (there is available a nice true laser distance sensor but too big for my project). I wrote a whole bunch of code to command sound, and some cool display effects. You can check out a room in the dark. Pretty cool stuff.

I used a teensy 3.2 (great little processor!!), adafruit 2w amp, adafruit FXmini with 8 recording channels, adafruit 1.8TFT, and a few other electronic bits. Designed and 3D printed the case freeCAD and Cura. Project almost complete.

I guess one could adapt this concept to an automatic RC collision avoidance or docking system.....hmmmmm....

Some prelim pics:

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is this and what does it do?

It's one of the bits from the new Dr. Who.   {-)

Gives real time detection of objects in close proximity - say for a driverless car, built into a truck a convoy of trucks could all travel down the motorway at the same speed and distance between them, as the lead truck speeds up or slows down so do the others within milliseconds of each other, in cars the future would be like the minority report when the vehicles all travel down a track without the passengers interaction.

So, I could fit this to my model boat and if there was a model too close it would put on the brakes.
Is brakes the next project?
kind regards Roy

Yes correct, could go into boat, just need a way to stabilize. They are already in your car.....

Here is final prototype . Works like a champ!

This opens up FPV night time sailing .

The adafruit and arduino arent expensive, what do you reckon its cost you?  Will you be publishing details?

From what you have attached it to - it appears you have an infestation of alien predators at the lake side, or is to be fitted to KPNUTS old corvette to the 4" platform to make it definetly something to shoot about  ;)

Hi Fellas, Tough questions  ...and I don't really know the answers. But it was a fun build.....   Need to get back into my pilot cutter this winter...
