Thanks LongBuild and Nigel..
I did see this and wondered if a boiler inspector had passed it, it looks to be soft soldered and dangerous and would never reach the 400 p.s.i. test.

George,
I am sure that no British or Australian Boiler Inspector on viewing the tank would even consider such an inspection or gas tank test. Sadly neither your or our Boiler Code Standards preclude the sale of such manufactured goods to any unsuspecting customer

Many thanks - not trying to deter people from making their own tanks - iy just looked so bad !
-
What psi are the commercial tanks tested to i/e coleman etc, thanks
-
not 400psi thats for sure. Strangely there is nothing in writing that I can find which states any pressure regulation for commercialy made tanks. It must be out there somewhere though. As standard at 20 deg c they are 30psi for the camping gas mix.
-
thanks for that but is it one rule for them and one rule for steam modelers?

Standards and such documents world wide and universally are similar to Governmental publications in that they are written by folk who do not necessarily consider the reader...... and as such <*< mistakes are made.....usually it is the Legal Fraternity who are the ultimate winners
I believe any registered UK commercial manufacturer of such refillable gas tanks are legally bound under the same UK Boiler Test Code 2018V14 - Volume 3, as any individual modeler constructing his/her own refillable gas tank
Section 9.2 notes that Certificates issued by Commercial Builders are acceptable, with the Certificate referencing Standards listed in the Appendix A of the Test Code
So essentially, the commercial manufacturer by issuing a Test Certificate is confirming that the product complies with the same Standard or hence the same test requirements ....as such each and every tank must be individually tested prior to certification, and not the production process
The hydraulic test pressure in this Code is 400 PSI, so any Test Certificates under this Code must bear this nominated 'hydraulic' Test Pressure
Mind you, this is only my interpenetration of UK Boiler Test Code 2018V14 - Volume 3 ... naturally I would be more than happy to stand corrected if I have misunderstood any section here
A talented artist may paint a beautiful landscape, however beauty or such is subjective and viewed by opinion, a model maker of the necessary skills could manufacture a refillable gas tank, however his work is judged in an objective method according to a Standard......opinions do not weigh into the examination of the tank
We had a report here some months back of an UK Company apparently or reportedly issuing ''rubber stamped'' Test Certificates, which to my understanding was a Criminal offence

Hi All with due respect to Derek's research ,there is a significant difference between a live steam generator and a gas pressure tank as I have hydraulic tested a model boiler to 100psi and no leaks however a further increase to 200 psi and a leak as thin as a spider web was noticed ,so imagine if this tiny amount of highly flammable gas were allowed to build up in a model boat hull ,the tiny amount of steam would have just condensed or sealed itself, oldtimers tell me a small tap of pepper helps.Certainly a gas sensor test would be in order here O0 cheers
