Evening Gents, a friend was camping last weekend and took a snap of this asymmetrical catamaran. I assume it is a work vessel of some type but wondered if anyone knew what it is etc?
It reminds me of an Australian vessel which was built from two unequal hulls back in the ninteenth century!

No idea, but the port hull's bow looks an aweful lot like a Perry cl FFG.

Research Vessel Triton. It's a trimaran :-))
-
Quite a bit about her on Google under RV Triton. She has been in Oz patrolling our northern shores (presumably as a stand in whilst the Border Foce was short of Cape Class patrol vessels) but is currently back in Great Yarmouth.
-
Thank you chaps! I told my friend what she was thanks to your assistance and I will look her up like I suggested he should.
Ta again :-))

Wasn’t she an experimental vessel for the Royal Navy for a while?
I know there was plan from Traplet many years ago of the Triton.
-
Hi Nick, she certainly was.

I know there was plan from Traplet many years ago of the Triton.
For reference the plan was in the MMI Mag April 1997

Here are a couple of pictures of Triton that I took in Great Yarmouth last year. She has been moored in the same place for approximately a year. You get a good view from South Quay if anyone is interested.
-
I remember she used to spend a lot of time supporting the wall in Pompey dockyard.
-
She was not really a success as a design and now nobody seems to know what to do with her!

Target Practice with the official that signed off on its design :-)) .

Fisheries protection, shallow draft? good for English channel patrol? must be some use, even ratings training ship / coast guard %)
-
So were these Shanty Town Bridge Umbrella Wings installed just before deployment to Equatorial rain forests? {-)

She was built purely to evaluate the tri hull system, believe the USA built some on a bigger scale, also seem to remember it was not long after the fat or slim hull design argument was raging. The 42 's were the long narrow design and suffered hull construction problems with cracking deep frames etc and had to be strengthen! But she did what was wanted, I expect they ran out of money to further the concept. Now the concept in the MOD is cheap as possible???
