Title: Alternative to a whistle
Post by: rhavrane on November 11, 2018, 07:41:36 pm
Bonjour,
I consider the whistle as "mandatory" on a steam model to define the steam well and I have found a "noisy" alternative  :-))

With a bit of Arduino use it could play tunes.

Bonjour TigerTiger,
An Arduino does not work with steam  ok2

:-) Granted  but it works with RC switches. It looks like you are using RC to control your whistle  :-) :-)

I think the idea is to use an Arduino to control the servo on the siren valve. This will give a more precise positioning than the joystick so controlling the pitch with greater accuracy. It will also allow for programming the servo to go through a sequence of positions each corresponding to a different pitch to produce a musical effect.

It sounds quite pathetic and nothing like the whistle of a ship/launch and looks as thought a musical instrument has been stuck onto a steam line.

Still if it pleases the owner that's what matters.

George.

Bonjour George,
The real sound is a little bit different and I also have to improve my servo management.
Besides this, it is a steam accessory that had never been done as far as I know and you have to take in account its small size and make it in perspective.
As you say as owner I am happy, thats what matters, and I try to do my best to raise interest on steam ok2

Bonjour,
With a large boiler and an accurate setting of its servo, the Microcosm siren can sing : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as0Ct_MQ9_8

It will certainly turn heads on your next public steaming!  :-))
I like it and it seems small enough to not look very out of place in a steam model.
