Martin,
Is there any way that the SM software could support an anonymous survey of the ages of members? I know some forums are able to do this sort of thing whereby you have a few options and people can vote just once.
e.g.
0-21
22-30
31-40
41-50
51-60
61-70
70+
Personally I think that the funadamental problem with the model boating we enjoy on this forum and as covered by Model Boats magazine is that people are simply getting too old to want to get involved in organising things and that those falling off the perch are not being replaced. I think we all know this is true but it would be interesting to see what the average age of Mayhem members is and the overall age profile.

Colin .
I think you need to amend the age groups
e.g
71- 80
81+

I am almost 75, but if there was any suitable water nearby, I would build a radio controlled ship, something maybe two feet long.

I think this will be interesting to see.
I have a feeling the older ages will have more votes than the younger ones/
how many cut or teeth on airfix type kits when we were young?
-
Currently the only one in my age bracket, wonder how long it'll stay that way %)
-
Well at the Mo in 58 but the last day of March ill be 59...oh and my wedding anniversary as well

Hi it's John V i am 73 years young .But not very good in health
-
this will be an interesting poll. I weren't surprised at most members being in the 50+ brackets but I did think there would be more younger ones. still its early days yet. :-))
-
I am not sure that the age profile, whilst interesting, worries me much. It might be that it is a hobby that appeals more to older people. I suspect that gardening might have a similar profile.
What matters more is whether the profile is getting older and whether older modellers leaving are being replaced by 40-50 year olds joining. I had models as a kid and then stopped until I was in my forties. Is this typical?
The rise of the ready to run model must also be having an effect somewhere. Perhaps all the kids enjoying their rtr models now will come back later as I did.
Having said all that boat modelling might well be becoming even more of a fringe hobby.

74 Damn it!

74 Damn it!
Do you have a birthday & think "how on earth did I get to be this old?" There is a bit inside my brain that is still 20 & can't believe that it us surrounded by the rest that is so much older!
-
Keeping some sort of level of fitness is the hard bit, cant maintain it.
Treadmills and fitbit stuff not for me!
-
Hi I like getting older, that may sound crazy but other option is not so good.
Not trying to hi-jack the thread but previous mention of ready to run models made me think back, this is now a long way.
We all started with toys (read RTR). Maybe we then separated into breaking and ignoring, (parents will provide if I yell enough). And also those trying to mend or at least request mending of the toy. This I think separates off who we are now.
This does not include the difficult ones among you who would first take everything apart, but does include those of you who could put it all together again.
Just a hypothesis!
Regards
Roy

I have improved my fitness, as my company provide free yoga sessions once a week in our lunch time, so there are myself and a number of the younger ladies in the time slot I go to. this keeps me flexible and has stopped my back aching at least. some of the other guys also do a slot, but they do a more energetic version.
-
Yes, back ache has been an ongoing problem for me, is there a way to diminish it?
-
must be one of the oldest members 88 years and been married for 66 years
-
I was 10 when you got married Gordon
Did you get a telegram for your 60th?
Went to a 60th last week.
Look after yourselves and no
wheelies on that turbo scooter of yours.
:police: :police: :police:

70 next month and spend most of my time in workshop surrounded by boats planes and helicopters. Get more fun building than using them.
-
Why are we so fixated by age , does it really matter just try to get the best out of what you have , treasure your family and friends, respect others points of view :-) and enjoy your chosen hobby :-)

It gives an idea of what is likely to happen to hobby demographics in the near future.
Doesn't take a soothsayer to predict you can expect to see a savage decline in clubs and activities in the hobby in the next decade.

Quite correct, this is exactly what we are seeing.

i'M 76 IN MARCH way though and would come along when I went Lost my darling wife of 44yrs in October. She laughed about me "playing with TOY boats and planes. In a nice way and would come along when I flew or sailed. I started with Star yachts .The fave was an Endeavour Which I sailed on various park lakes in Liverpool and New Brighton. Occasionally Hoylake and Southport. Then I got into various airboats. One being Vic Smeeds POND SKATER. When I get back on my feet I intend doing another. With rc and maybe bigger. We oldies probably came back in our 30 s/40 s when we had kids. Then as the kids "grew out of them" had another break. Then maybe came back with grandkids.?? OR NOT.
-
will be Four Score in August up at 0445 hrs Mon-Frid for a 2 hour shift 6 till 8 probably will retire this year
-
Good on you Gordon and your good lady, will drop by soon and have a catch up
Rich
-
73% over 60 then so far!
Colin
-
Maybe you need new batteries in your abbuscus Colin {-)
-
It's gone up since I posted that.
Colin
-
So probably 60% of the membership are over retirement age . With almost 7,000 members @ 60 % that means the forum is keeping about 4,200 citizens out of the funny farm. Not bad going.

Just a question on the side regiment ..... being from afar, I am thinking that your Telegrams may be from behind the walls of Buckingham Palace?
So if this is the case, are they sent by special Court Messenger delivery, or does ERII contract this out to her Husband?
if this is the case, was the Duke on his way delivering last week when he lost control of his Landie?
Either way, our congratulations to you and your good Wife on your achievement/sentence {-) .....

It's a con.
Somebody has to apply for it & send marriage certificate etc then some, probably junior, clerk sends a card to the lucky couple saying that HM has commanded it be sent. I have no idea why but my parents in law saw it as important.
-
You have to apply.
My daughter in law's parents
recently had theirs but I believe
one of the daughters sent off the relevant
proof.

Oh well I`ll just get a post card from a tourist shop and sign it "gawn yursel Dunky , how`s the wife, Luv Liz" :}

Heaven help us >>:-( ..... even in the Colonies....yes OZ....our Local Federal Member is advertising that she can organize a note from EIIR
This is a non Political comment....[I do not Vote for this person].....just confirming a little fact for our members %)
[A pity she cannot attract Federal $ for worthwhile Projects.....more Nurses in Hospitals [not bureaucrats] more Police....more Teachers for kids]
