Hi there Bob
I let you into a secret what some scratch builders use, but you must promise not to tell anyone else on the Forum ;D ;D if you have a Model Shop that deals with model railway stuff, there is a Company called Ratio/Wills they are based in sunny Buckfastleigh, Devon they do a set of 00 fittings - ladders and steps at reasonable prices - but shshshshsh dont tell anyone O0 This may help you mate.

ps oh and I think James Lane of Blyth does photo etched portholes etc. and he does ladders at 1:72 scale. That will bring you a step forward mate 8)
