Title: Wooden decking
Post by: terry1956 on April 12, 2019, 09:23:06 am
hi chaps, is there a place to buy wood to make some decking. I have a surcouf submarine build that needs wooden decking. Just not sure what would be the best wood to use or a place that sells it. I can laser cut the thin verniers to shape and the laser will mark out the planking. Just need the correct wood.

I'm currently using SLEC to produce laser-inscribed, planked-effect decks for my models.  http://www.slecuk.com/index.html (http://www.slecuk.com/index.html)    The thinnest material they can use reliably is 0.8mm ply, as anything thinner won't stay flat down on the machine's bed and the laser breaks through in places. In 0.8mm, however, the finished job is terrific! Do be extra-careful to waterproof it, though, because so-called 'laser ply' uses a water-based adhesive for its laminations to eliminate that black burning on the outline. I find Rustins Plastic Coating to be an excellent choice for this. https://www.rustins.ltd/rustins/our-products/indoor/plastic-coating-hardener-gloss (https://www.rustins.ltd/rustins/our-products/indoor/plastic-coating-hardener-gloss)

Thank, had to purchase from amazon as it was half the price as the hobby shop. I was thinking once the deck is in place to Matt expoxy the whole sub both to seal the wood and the paintwork.

Hi Terry

May I suggest you ask this question on the A.M.S. forum as well  http://www.theassociationofmodelsubmariners.com (http://www.theassociationofmodelsubmariners.com/) as some of the members had done this is the past.
