Last Thursday I took an unexpected dip in my local model boating lake, total cost to me (1) Wedding Ring <:( (2) A cold - (3) New Key for the car £235.28 inc vat,🤬
Conclusion Do not go swimming with your car keys in your pocket
-
Ouch!
-
Funnily enough I've asked my local dealer for a quote for a new key for my car only Today.
£200 for the key and another £248 + VAT to de-code the old one and recode the new one.Absolutely ridiculous.
Although on the plus side I happen to know these keys are entirely waterproof. For £448 + VAT though I'd expect it to assemble the model boat for me too.
-
That's more than my car's worth ! {-)

With some cars you can make a replacement key if you still have the spare supplied when new. This can be cheaper than a full replacement.

You would not believe what I have had to go through just to get this key, Mercedes :police: just stopped from giving me an internal %% , had to show the V5 photo ID , utility bill just to show that I lived were I said I lived, pay upfront then it will be a min of five days before it is with Mercedes, then they said I have to take the car to them just so they can set it up for the car.
-
It's money for old rope these days.
Back in the 60s when I worked in the motor industry we used to have a board in the R&D Workshop that held 6 keys, and they were all masters. With that lot we could open and drive away almost any car on the market, no matter who made it!
-
The key for my Duke fits my Reliant Scimitar 8) 8) 8) :P
Ned
It's a carbon copy of a Starbucks coffee stirrer %%
-
No way will my Duke key (900SSie) fit
-
then they said I have to take the car to them just so they can set it up for the car.
Err, ask them how do they expect you do that when the key is well, err goose(d). No need to tell them that you have a second key, it would be interesting to know.

"Key's"?
It must of been tocally apostraphal too you.

If it is like the key to my car it has to come from the manufacturer - not the UK importer - which is why it takes a few days. All in the name of security.
-
The remote control of my car key no longer works i.e the battery is dead - haven't bothered to change it, I just use the key in the old fashioned way, that way I can be confident that I have locked / unlocked the car.
Total cost = nowt! :-))
Regards,
Ray.

Yes I could do that except that the engine wouldn't start.
I look after my keys very carefully! All this key security is why thieves now steal keys & then just drive off in the car rather than the old wire coathanger method.
-
Yes the day's when you could start a Mk3 Land Rover diesel with a cut down floor board nail
have now long gone, now with all these smart key's all you have to do is stand next to the car with the key in your pocket and you can open the door and get in.
I will be taking more care with the new one.

A local security firm, came out to my 2018 plate car and cut a replacement from the red second key and then paired the new key to the car. £ 145 inc VAT. He doesn't have a huge showroom to fund.
If it isn't a warranty claim, I always go elsewhere.

If you can find one, a great idea.
A few years back I had cause to replace one for a Renault, thick end of £200 back then. It "had" to come from Paris, the time it took I think it walked, then there was the palaver at the Renault agent who were charging a minimum of one hour for the job. After a three quarter hour wait, the alleged mechanic who had wandered off with the dead key came over and apologised, saying it wouldn't work. I asked if he had read the job sheet and collected the new key from the stores. Ten minutes later he was back, everything working. Main agents are a wall to wall rip-off from where I get to look.

Yes, I agree. As part of a routine service I was once charged £12 + VAT for a new coin-cell in the remote zapper for my Toyota, when I can buy five of the identical battery from Component Shop for £1.25. I returned the battery to the dealer and loudly insisted on a refund!

Ian (component shop) will be doing watch batteries next... O0 .....oh wait ! he does .... {-) {-) {-) {-)

have you ticked you have an immobiliser to your insurers and in your case some keys only lock the drivers door

Yep, insurers know about the factory fitted immobiliser, the car (2004 Vauxhall Agila) can only be started with the key. I believe the battery operated remote is purely for the convenience of locking all doors at once - I can do that by the simple expedient of quarter turning the key in the lock twice. O0 :-))

Ray.

Depending on the car, Mr Minute will re program a key fob for about £50. Saves about £200 off dealership charges and means you sometimes only need a replacement fob off eBay (as long as the circuit board works). Not sure how encompassing their machines are though, particularly for newer cars. Mercs are a bit different.
-
Same here RST.......in OZ we also have the Mr Minit franchises.........
They will clone or reprogram a replacement motor vehicle electronic key [if you have an original] for less than $100.00 AUD :-))

Wonder if the latest ones would be
doable. Mine goes to sleep after five
mins hung up immobile to stop
the relay Grabbers.

Ray on my car which is only a couple of years newer than yours and previous older ones the remote does not just lock/ unlock it arms any other security fitted .

My 2004 Vauxhall Signum, should be similar tech to your Agila I reckon, doesn't do the 'quarter turn unlock' business if I've locked it like that with the key. It fires off TWO alarms, and won't start at all!
I had to go the whole hog, buy the new key AND have it 'connected' to the car's systems by the VM dealer. :((
-
I'm not sure why that should be. The Agila is based on the Suzuki Wagon R but with v/hall Corsa engine.
Perhaps that has some bearing on it?
Regards,
Ray.

The Signum is a 2003-2007 Vectra which is a Chevy Malibu.

Boy I did not think that this would go to two pages, I only posted it as I thought it just may give some a laugh :} :-))

Almost, but I won't argue the point even though I have two of them..... :-)

Hi having sold my Honda CR-V I have several new unused key batteries for anyone that wants them. No charge.

Charging hundreds for hardware that costs pennies.

I now think that it is time to call it a day on this, don't you. <*< <*<
It has nothing to do with Ship's as I sad be for I only posted it as a laugh

I can live with it, I just don't want everyone to get to keyed up about it,

Well, I think you have just simply struck a chord.
Lose your keys on a modern car and the consequences are very expensive.
I think we can all identify with that.
