Martin has done an amazing job on my newly arrived steam plant . The little twin valve engine is beautiful too. Bit of ghost whistling when firing up however this soon goes after a minute or by tweaking the gas valve. As a beginner I am still getting used to it and have fired it up twice now. The workmanship is striking and I cannot wait to get this Borkum finished.
As an aside, which engine oil is recommended for oiling the valves/crankshaft etc. I have steam oil for displacement lubricator and cups on top of the pillars.
It’s a learning curve but an enjoyable one.

Based on my experience, a light oil does not stay on moving parts, this is why I use a 480 grade steam oil to grease everything.

Beautiful steam plant. Steam oil is usually fine for all moving parts on a model steam engine, with an exception: if you have oil cups with very fine holes then you might need a lighter oil so that it flows into the bearing. Get a good quality machine oil.

KNO3 has raised a good point here, many years ago, I saw older BH&M model steam engines which had sintered bronze bushes in the bigend, that required a light oil to migrate through the porous bush material
I am sure the people at Martin Baylis could confirm their recommendation.......such a superb plant certainly deserves a strich adherence in the recommended lubrication schedule ...........[nothing more, <*< nothing less]
The engine plate as shown with the de-oiler and gas tank outboard of the engine looks fine, but will the plate fit within the beam of the Borkum hull?

Sorry, I incorrectly suggested an older name of BM&H, however it is clearly .........MH&B as below....pretty sure Martin [Baylis] is the Son of the original B in the engine manufacturers name
[It would be interesting to understand if the current Baylis family of engines incorporate the sintered bronze crankshaft bushings]

:-)) Great looking......... After some Ahours Steaming,,with my MB engine... i have a extra displacement lubricator on,,or it will take all the oile to fast ,
and one thing i not to happy with,,is that the engine spit some water..more than i like it to do,,from under the chest valve,and i cant se any oring under it ,,but i have to ask MB
ok,,, Enjoy your new steam plant,,, i use 1/2 steam oile and 1/2 gear oil , it make a nice mix,,

Hi Derek,
The plate was made after I sent Martin the original schematic drawings that come with the Borkum and I have checked it and yes it will fit.

That makes sense. I think that’s why Martin suggests adding oil to the cups when the engine is warm.

No, it is a normal twin (with cylinders of equal diameters), disguised to look like a compound by using different sizes of cylinder covers and a suitably shaped engine block.
The only maker I know that currently builds real model compounds in small size is JMC in France. And there is Stuart in the UK, but their compounds are much larger.

That's way too cool to put in a damp boat. Far better in to place it in the middle of the coffee table and drool over it.
