Title: Airfix 1/12 Bentley 4.5 litre
Post by: kpnuts on May 15, 2020, 08:45:03 pm
Hi all I got this back from my ex boss as he no longer wanted it.
I'm going to strip it and rebuild it as a different version, can you guess which version.
It's very rare and was sold for £132,000 (hint there is a lot of wood involved )
Also I had to remove the exhaust as it runs differently.

In the years since I built this kit I like to think I've got better at weathering engines realistically so this ones coming out to have a do over.

As long as the child finder general does not get involved it look like a good project, are the wings going to be deployed (I assume its going to be chitty)
Title: Re: Airfix 1/12 Bentley 4.5 litre
Post by: kpnuts on May 17, 2020, 11:45:18 am
That was my original idea but I then decided to do a different version of the blower.
I've had so many people think of Chitty maybe I should go for that.
Or maybe build this one then do Chitty

If this had been anyone else's thread I would have said what a shame to spoil a lovely old model, but as it is I know it will end up actually better what ever you do with it.  :-))

Thanks for the compliment Joe
Reworked some of the engine.
When I first got this back I had visions of turning it into Chitty but then thought I would check out the different versions this engine was used in and decided on the boat tail version.
What's funny is the first guess a lot of people made on what I was doing with it was Chitty (I thought turning it into Chitty was quite original and no one would think of that)
I quite liked the idea so my question is (I dont know how to do a poll) which would you like to see most the red boat tail Bentley or Chitty.

Hi all started on the body (that rear end wont be pointed it is cut square on the car)
It also flares out over the suspension lots of work on this part just wondering whether I will have to stain the wood red or if the mahogany when varnished will be red enough, I think on the actual car it is stained.

I’ve just bought a Haynes book about the Bentley 4.5litre and wow what a car! I think you are doing this fantastic car a brilliant job. I saw someone near Oxford a few weeks ago driving what looked like one on the M40- I had to follow it- sounded fantastic and the looks- beautiful.
Keep up the good work. :-))

Well I've spent most of tonight working on the exhaust (it goes down and under the car on the original version) it has to come out through the side panel on this version and on the actual car would have nuts to undo in order to move the exhaust and open the side panel. On this I obviously cant glue the exhaust to the manifold as I wont be able to put the side panel on and I cant put the side I've managed to figure a way to do it similar to the way it would have been done on the real car (will post pics when I've painted it all)

Hi all regrettably I will no longer be able to post updates on my builds as imgbb (who I've been using ) no longer allows me to upload pics (this just after a week of them asking me to upgrade at £9.00 a month) just as well I didn't.
All other free hosting sites seem to want you to create your own website to host pics (I'm not interested in spending hours setting up a website just to host some pics) so with regret this will be my last entry here.

Hi Ken , I've never understood why people find it necessary to use photo hosting sites, why do you not do as I do and upload photos direct from your PC, or is there some reason I'm unaware of, it would be a shame to lose your interesting logs,  {:-{

Try www.pbase.com for hosting. Can be free or $23 a year. My site is www.pbase.com/tr7v8 dead east to set up even as default, been on there for 15 odd years

I have also never used a hosting site, like Joe I simply upload direct from my PC. after first reducing the size with a free app called Light Image Resizer.

When I was a kid I was bought a classic car book. In it was a Hispano Suiza with a Tulip wood body which made a great impression on me at the time. This reminds me of that. Lovely.

The Bentley looks superb, and better balanced than the Hispano, though that looks a bobby dazzler as well  :}

Hi all well I've made a big decision (I thought there was too much back end on it) so I've decided theres enough room for rear seats. There were lots of coach builders in those days and you could have it built anyway you liked if you had the money, so whose to say it wasnt like this.
The only thing now I've bitten the bullet is should I stick with a single seat or go with a double and have I gone back far enough.

Post by: ballastanksian on June 14, 2020, 11:17:55 am

This is the best thing you have done Ken. The colours, finish and look is beautiful  :-)) I initially thought the shape and cut of the hole for the rear seats detracted, but you then modified it and have brought it right back to quality.
Ironically, I think it looks a bit wasp like, but black and yellow would look disgusting on such a gorgeous shape, and think the red works so much better especially with the red tones of the wood.

If I had the money and access to a chassis and running gear, I would have the restorers refer directly to your build and scheme Ken.

Hi all, done a lot of work on it over the weekend.
I've got big ambitions to make the throttle linkages up (we will see how far the ambition gets compared to how much skill and patience I have) I must say I'm quite pleased with how shes looking at the moment.
