I'm toying with the idea of purchasing one of these. I don't really need anything more 'heavy duty', since i will only use it for turning small plastic/aly/brass pieces. Does anyone have any experience of this particular model? I like the fact it only weighs 4.5kg so i can easily stash it under the bench when not required. Or is there a different model i should take a look at?

I always find that Proxxon stuff is a bit over-priced. However that doesn't seem to be a bad price for what you are getting. Just add a drill chuck and you could tackle most model making tasks.
If I had the money spare I would maybe buy one for myself. I can always use the lathe in my neighbours workshop but it's a bit big for fine model making work.

having just purchased a collet chuck for my Unimat, I can say that a collet chuck and set of collets makes a great addition for the versatiliy of holding standard bar stock for making small parts, I was threading the interior of 3mm tube to 8BA, something I would never have considered before.

Taranis has recently bought a Proxxon lathe and has a thread in Engineering etc. and probably looked at the different models.
Whilst I've managed without one I would like to get a small lathe at some time. And a drill press and.........! :-)

having just purchased a collet chuck for my Unimat, I can say that a collet chuck and set of collets makes a great addition for the versatiliy of holding standard bar stock for making small parts, I was threading the interior of 3mm tube to 8BA, something I would never have considered before.
Silly question, but if you've got a 3 jaw chuck why would you need to use collets? I would have thought that the 3 jaw is more versatile, it certainly was on the Myford Super 7 I used to have.

Worth looking at the small modellers lathe on Axminster Tools. This has the advantage that the bedways are hardened cast iron and the spindle is hard steel while on the proxxon they are only aluminium.

I did consider this one. But i ruled it out because as far as i can tell, you cannot swivel the tool post slide, to enable you to turn a Taper. I may be wrong about this though. I did post the question on the site, but didn't get any response.
The other thing against it is that it weighs 13kg compared to the Proxxon at 4.5kg, so would require a more permanent setup on the bench.

I looked at the 150 Charlie but I got a good price on the 250

The compound slide for the CO is sold as an extra . Arc Eurotrade still sell most spares for the CO as well as the other larger Sieg machines

I would have a look at the Peatol Lathe. I bought one many years ago and whilst its quite basic its very solid and a lot cheaper than the one you are looking at. Its belt driven so very quiet and lots of accessories are available. In the US its known as the "Taigh" or something like that.

So i just pulled the trigger, and the Proxxon FD 150 plus a 6 piece tool set and a drill chuck, should be heading my way in the next few days!

my axminster sx1 milling machine arrived yesterday, packed in a wonderful wooden crate
