With a possible nationwide lockdown coming, I thought it was time to make some room on the table.

As I'm almost finished the smaller Slec version the comparison is chalk and cheese. Except its Slec excellent wood and cutting.

Took this pic this morning on top of a 4 foot freezer (for scale)

So all of these have to make one of these

Quite a bit of room!
Will follow with interest.

Yeah I'll be following too, these boats are well worth the effort. :-))

Slight deviation from the destructions, Slec suggest building the hull structure loose (luckily the parts fit fairly snug, but even so there is a large margin of error), and use CA to hold the parts together before offering it upto the deck to check it fits in the hole.
I instead (as you can see) assembled mine in situ (no glue yet applied), this 100% guarantees everything is in the correct place, and only then did I (and then only tiny spot glued) did I use medium CA just to hold everything in place, whilst I checked and double checked everything
[size=78%]
Once 200% happy, everything was beaded with Aliphatic glue, still clamping the deck in place, but NOT gluing it to anything.
Once dry the hull assembly is a very snug fit in the deck, and was then removed and further beading of glue applied.

Making good progress there. As said looks like a cross between the Precedent kit and the smaller SLEC Huntsman with their flat deck method. Are there formers to give a camber to the deck?
Chap was at the club yesterday with his big Huntsman. They look smaller on the water and with the brushless motor it was surprisingly fast and nimble and looked great sweeping around the lake in the sunshine.

Adding all the parts for the keel
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50568192348_519b1b9512_h.jpg)
Another slight deviation from the manual, I'm going to cut these small parts out (Prop shaft guide), the manual suggest drilling a hole later, but I'm going to cut the small bridging pieces out now. After all there is a doubler on both side, and with the bits removed the drill will go through far more true than with them in.
-
Good idea, I've never fancied the drill method. As the prop shaft is wider than the keel what I do is file out a hollow in each doubler (using PermaGrit files), glue one doubler in place, cut out the part of the keel where the prop shaft goes and then glue the other doubler in place.
The resultant hole is a little oversize to give wiggle room for when aligning the prop shaft and motor later.

Almost finished the keel
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50572712778_52b1b37306_z.jpg)
Before starting to assemble it together with the formers etc
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50573459646_f011127a51_b.jpg)
Another minor deviation, the manual states installing the two (4 parts laminated) keel doublers at the back between the rear two bulkheads (these also add strength where the rudder goes) before fitting the keel in place.
I chose to add mine after bringing the two assemblies together, less chance of a mistake in placing them on an unmarked keel

Yet another Huntsman build for me to try and keep up to date with.
So good to see Fairey boats being such a popular choice with people and also seeing peoples different takes on everything, from building, to fittings and finish.
Keep up the good work, another one bookmarked :-)

Almost finished my least favorite part, SKINNING
Adding the bottom skins

And side skins are now on

Geeze thats a lot of sanding.....
-
Ah, but it will all be worth it in the end though :-))
-
I run a Tamiya razor saw along the edges of any surplus skins or decking after they have been fitted to reduce the amount of sanding needed.
A spokeshave can also do the same job at removing any surplus material, but sanding is aways needed to made a nice finish.
-
I tend to use my small plane, works great on the edges of skins, then sand for ever...

My favorite part, applying the Fglass cloth and Poly-C
I always think its downhill from here, with the worse behind me.

Another one making good progress on their Fairey.
I think it's great, all the love for the different versions of Fairey boats and the numerous builds of them going on.
It's certainly giving me enthusiasm to get mine down from the loft, do the modification to aft cockpit and get it all fixed up.
Keep up the good work.

Like a lot of things it goes round in circles.
When I got interested in the hobby about 3 years ago and came on here there was quite a lot of interest but then it dropped off. This year, partly because of the lockdown, it has been revitalised with the most builds and refurbishments for a long time.

There are a lot of constructional similarities between this build and the Precedent Huntsman construction. Very interesting - and good progress too! :-))

Do note, however, that the scoops originally supplied are the wrong scale. I have supplied SLEC with resin-cast patterns to vac-form the correct size scoops so if those in your kit are the tiny little ones then I suggest you pester SLEC for a pair of the right size!

Hi Graham,
Your idea of having twin water outlets on the transom will look really good - were did you get the alloy Y connector?
I have been trying to find a couple of these to help with the plumbing on my boats, but I can't find any of these alloy connecters anywhere.
My search so far has been for water cooling parts for model boats and I also tried aquarium supplies as I thought they may use them on their air tubes, but I have only see some mounted plastic ones.
Many thanks,
Bob.
-
Bob,
Try Googling Windscreen washer Y connector. Quite a few different sizes come up. E.G.:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Windscreen-Washer-Hose-Connectors-Straight-T-Piece-Y-Piece-Connectors-/291711618393
They are plastic but would proably be OK.

Thanks Colin,
I have seen the plastic ones and they will work - but I would really like to find some alloy ones if I can.
Previously I have seen them anodised in several different colours - and a red one would look really tarty in my boats! %%
Stay safe,
Bob.

There are some apparent metal ones about.
This one appears to be a mix of metal and plastic. Looks quite smart!

That looks better than anything that I have found so far Colin so I will buy a couple to use now as they look solid and well made.
........but like a Magpie :embarrassed: I think I must be attracted to all things shiny so I will still keep looking for some alloy ones (like Grahams) for future applications (even if nobody but me will know its hidden away under the decks!).
Many thanks for you help and time, I will get a couple on order tomorrow.
Best regards,
Bob.
