Happy Birthday to you :-)) and catch up soon O0
-
Happy birthday for tomorrow regiment, at 67 I fell like the baby of the topic {-)
-
Am just behind you Dave at 66 Happy Birthday for tomorrow Regiment.
Regards Howard.
-
I'm damned if I'm going to pay mine yet.
I'm living with friends 120 miles away from my house during the virus crisis, so I see no reason to pay a 'licence' (=tax) for a TV I can't even see, let alone switch on!
-
Happy birthday Regiment, that's quite a milestone. I'll be 84 in January, so I'm getting there ok2
Peter.
-
Imagine having to pay Tesco £154 so you could shop at Aldi. That is what the TV Tax does.
Ps Happy birthday Regiment.
-
Happy Birthday Regiment - same day as me, but you're 10 years ahead of me. :-)) :-)) :-))
Barrie
-
Happy Birthday Regiment I hope you are enjoying your day, good age and still modelling!
Best regards
Roy
-
I missed this for some reason - Happy birthday Regiment and I hope you keep modelling buddy :-))
-
Wow! 90 not out - many happy returns of the day Regiment.
I turned 66 yesterday, now eligible for my UK state pension, missed out on the 65 cut-off by 3 months!
Best Regards,
Mike
-
Many happy returns Regiment!
I have not had a telly for years but do use Youtube for things I want to watch and so only pay the monthly Broadband fee.
Obviously, if you have domestic control, they might want a telly for such enriching things like 'Stenders, or Corrie, or even Emmerdale 'Farm?' so leaving you with no alternative to the license.

THANKS FOR REPLYS

While I have no sympathy at all with the way the government has behaved on this, I have often wondered why at 75+ you are suddenly considered too impecunious to afford a TV licence when at every age up to and including 74 you are considered rich enough to buy one. What happens on your 75th birthday? Seems illogical to me. Or is it a reward for simply living that long? :-)

I agree but don't look for logic. When the free licence was given it was a political decision and not an economic one.
-
Like when the Government (under Boris ) divested themselves of licensing responsibility and dumped it on the BBC with only a slight hint they should maintain the Old Grotts free license and then did not utter a beat when the BBC chose not to
-
As if the Beeb WOULDN'T jump at the chance to grab more money!
It was a forgone conclusion no matter what anyone in the Govt. or the Beeb said when the scheme was first mooted. :((

I think it was more a case of holding onto £250m of the tax revenue which they were already receiving to cover some of their existing costs. The alternative would have been to cut services, in which case the clamour would have come from the folk who hold a different view from yours.
Winter Fuel Payments next, anyone? 8)

If we must pay a TV Tax then it should be just sufficient to provide one TV and one radio channel, beyond that should be on subscription model.
-
They already have adverts before any video's we can watch over here >>:-( so perhaps they should go fully commercial.

Or you could regard it as one of the (very few) benefits of growing old.
As BrianB6 pointed out, we don’t have TV licences over here, and haven’t for decades.
Peter.

When we let the house out and moved onto the boat I cancelled my tv license. I told them I was going to Australia for 6 months and when I returned I would buy another license. I asked them to tell me how to get one when I won’t have an address. Silence. Still don’t have one.

But which channel?
I haven't watched anything on BBC1 or 3 TV in years although I do admit to watching BBC2, 4 & occasionally News 24. On radio I don't listen to radio 1, 2, 3, or any local radio. I have Radio 4 on in the car for longer journeys.
So for me it would be Radio 4 and BBC4 TV. I doubt that others would agree.
I certainly would object to being forced to pay for others to listen to Radio 1 and BBC1 without there being anything that I would consume.

I'm with you all the way.
Why not just abolish the so-called TV Licence fee altogether and just pay the Beeb's costs from general taxation? Leaving it isolated to the whim of an autocratic government retains its status as a political football instead of a genuine public service. For those who would advocate a model based on advertising I invite you to watch any of the "repeat" channels e.f. Drama, Yesterday. Once you've sat through 4.5 minutes of brainless adverts you only have to suffer ten minutes of previously broadcast TV slop before you can see the same ads all over again... Groundhog Day, anyone? As for subscriptions, I wouldn't relish any of my money going into Murdoch's overstuffed coffers. After all, it was his Fox News Channel that opened us up to the delights of The Orange Man.
Be careful what you wish for.

To Me the bbc is no longer fit for purpose.
Until the Goverment make it no longer a criminal offence to not pay your TV lience there not many options if you have a TV.
One I did hear. If every one did it . It will screw the bbc. Give them 12 post dated checks. This means it will cost them a lot more to get the money.
John

Aye but Post dated cheques have no legal weight Tis the bank that decides whether to honour them. Also banks and their T&C 's may not permit using post date
-
There is a solution and that is to record the commercial stuff and then view later with a fast forward on the adverts.
Being a sucker for Poirot there are some good shows. Lately I have watched a more local TV channel London Live which has old B/W films from the 30s to the 50's and I enjoy seeing the background which is now becoming a part of our history. Well mine anyway. Some of them are awful plots but......
I agree with radio listening in a previous thread but would add in Classic FM, that is all my car radio is tuned into, well all except radio3 but their the music can be a bit obscure.

Even better Roy if one can Record from catch up a lot have the adverts removed.I never watch live programmes bar lunchtime and teatime. The main thing the the beeb annoys me is few if any of their catchups carry the Surround sound if it was on the broadcast most others do,bar ITV which never uses it on any of its channels including movies ironically too tight to pay Dolby licence.
-
95% of the time we record programs via Tivo BT box and generally watch only these with the odd viewing the news live, I spend more time channel hopping during the day only tivo recording when its something that I want to watch without adverts in, skipping adverts can be an art in it's self, skip to far forward and having to go back can be frustrating, tivo has the added benifit that if you miss what someone said then its easy enough to go back and watch the piece again.

Free money has allowed the BBC to encroach into areas far beyond their original remit and with no regard to efficiency.
They not only have a web presence, they have the largest web presence in Europe just because they can.
The only real answer is to stop all compulsory payments to them. Of course they won't go subscription because their number of viewers would fall far below their current scam.

If I wright out 12 Checks for 2021. 1 for each month. Then send them to the bbc. They can not bank the check untill the month it is in. A bank will not aceppt a check for a date in the future. This keeps you both leagl and cost the bbc more money.

I doubt that it is legal. A TV licence has to be paid for in advance and is then issued for one year. By sending post dated cheques you have not paid for it and thus a licence would not be issued.
Just my opinion.

And it just makes things difficult for some poor underling somewhere who probably agrees with you anyway. The people who make the policy would never know about it.

The solution is blissfully simple. If you object to paying a TV Tax/Licence then just don't pay it. In all probability "they" will never catch up with you. There's no need for juvenile rants or smug fantasies about acts of petty financial sabotage. As Colin says, no-one of any importance will know or care except the idiots you're trying to impress by suggesting such nonsense.
Just don't bother coming on here with your diatribes - they are selfish and pathetic.

I think that it would be a very good idea if everyone calmed down regarding this topic.
We are on a Model Boat forum and this is a non modelling topic regarding which we are going to change nothing. It would be a great shame if we fell out over something we can do nothing about and is not why we are here anyway.
