Title: Daring class destroyer circa 1950s
Post by: ether823 on December 05, 2020, 10:59:29 am
Thinking of building a Daring class destroyer (1950s) in 1/72 scale and Fleet scale do a nice hull at 65", Does anyone know where I can get a 1/72 scale plan of the ships from. All I can find is 1/96 and it means buggering about scaling everything up (getting lazy), Many thanks, Peter

Owned by a company called Trinities House (not the lighthouse as far as I’m aware!) but hideously expensive now for the drawings. I’m not sure that the Daring class (1950s) version is in the collection (the Type 45 is). The last time I tried to look through I had to use a VPN as the main page kept showing unrelated adverts as if it had been hacked. As soon as I activated my VPN it worked normally.
Getting back to the original query: I don’t think that any other scales other than 1/96 as a modellers plan version or the 1/48 scale NMM plans are available- I think you’ll need to scale the plans off a 1/96 set at a print shop, that’s what I’d do.

Thanks for the info gents. I`ll just get a set of 1/96 and scale them up 1.3. Did this with a 1/96 HMS Velox plan out of a book and built it as 1/48 scale, Peter

For scaling up or down when checking measurements a pair of proprtional dividers can be very useful as you can lay off from the plan directly.

That or measure and calculate each dimension. Both have merits. Good luck with your build.

You could try contacting Task Force 72 as some of their members have built the Australian version in 1:72 scale

I also have quite a few photos of HMAS Vampire now in Sydney if you would like them.  To many to post here.  <:(

ether823,
I don't know if my laziness matches yours, but I just make up a "scale rule" so that the models dimensions can be read directly off the plans.

Remember to check the plan and elevations and end elevations are correct and the associated 'scale rule' is used for the correct elevation, as someone here reported that the drawing they had from somewhere had two different scales for the project they were working on  ;)

Glad not just me that had problems with trinity, showing all sorts of crap.  Agree prices are now, its actually cheaper in most case now to get from NMM

Just spotted this. It's only 1:192 but for about £8 you can get the pdf file. I know its small but things can always grow!  www.navyhistory.org.au/shop/hmas-duchess-i-as-joined-1964/ (http://www.navyhistory.org.au/shop/hmas-duchess-i-as-joined-1964/)

To be honest, I never thought the Darings were very good looking ships. The earlier Battles were much more attarctive to look at.

I must agree Colin, we [HMA] Navy had a number of the in various renditions from 3 to 1 only 4.5" Twin Vickers mount

The listings of the vessels various warefare platforms looked impressive, however they still had an unattractive persona, didn't matter from which view.....they were plain Jane ugly and they all rolled like tops

We had to wait until we purchased 3 of the classic lined Charles F Adams Destroyers  from the US........then we went backwards again with US designed FFG's >>:-( ......then finally our own built ANZAC Class

But, in spite of the above comments, how many of us built the Airfix model in our yoof and thought "Wow"

Best destroyers the RN had i believe , remember seeing them come and go from Chatham as a child and the accuracy of the A/A was legendary, would have made the difference in the Falklands.

The reason I picked this class of ship is that I like to model the unusual. my last model was a China gun boat and before that a Torpedo boat destroyer etc. Peter

Probably the best reason to have one, i have not seen one in operation yet, I have a similar vein of thought myself.

There are a few Darings in TF72. To me the Australian version looks better than the RN one.

Partly built from the plans above combined with Paul Webb's plans and access to the RAN original plans.
