Title: Twin motors, single ESC: options
Post by: npomeroy on January 03, 2021, 04:01:02 am
Sorry if this is detailed elsewhere but...
I've only worked with single throttle, single motor aircraft ESCs.  But I want to build a twin-prop tug such that the motors can vary left/right to give a turning effect as well as reversing. It will be a scale Damen 1907 with kort shrouds and twin rudders.  Presumably the rudders are interlinked.
 So,

- Are there single ESCs that will control 2 motors (probably brushed) separately?

Presumably they need a minimum of 2 inputs:
- Would this normally be left and right throttle channels (2 sticks on TX), or single throttle plus left/right bias (one stick, 2 axes)?

I understand this setup is used on tracked crawlers but can't find online specs that make this clear.

I'd appreciate either links to other threads on this or to a product.

Cheers
Nelson

Yes,   Component Shop sell their Action Range of mixers.   There is a data sheet for each unit on their website.......        https://www.componentshop.co.uk/action-electronics/mixers-multifunction.html

Hi Nelson, all my tug steering is done with the sticks, left stick left motor, right stick right motor.
You will need at least a 4 channel radio setup.
I replaced the spring on the right stick for a ratchet, up/down movement only.
You have to use two speed controllers and then you control through the sticks as you have
already stated, also you have the benefit that if one motor fails for any reason, prop fouling etc.
you still have the other motor to bring the boat home without putting power onto the failed motor
causing a possible burn out.
Hope this helps.

npomeroy,
I might be useful to read the postings in "technical, Hints and Tips" section.  Look for the thread on Rudder, Twin Motor Control 2 Sticks way back 31 August 2018.

Thanks Glynn.  I think I'll resume the discussion on that thread https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,61552.0.html

Change the polarity of one of the motors.
