Title: HMS Leviathan
Post by: Rob47 on February 07, 2021, 11:04:27 pm
looking for something to build while parts for Victorious are being produced and Queen Elizabeth is waiting for better weather.
Decided to use a bit of modelling licence and adapt with a mock story my version of Glynn Guests HMS Goliath.  As you can see I have named her Leviathan, this was an actual carrier built and launched as part of the majestic class, which were basically Colossus class upgraded.  She was never fitted out and eventually scrapped.  So the story, RN wanted another carrier of Colossus class, so one more was ordered and it took the name Leviathan, she took part with Eagle in the Suez air strikes, this allows me to use Westland Wyvern which I think is a mean looking aircraft and did actually take part in the Op.
Building is following the typical GG build, but with a few tweaks, the stern is pulled in tighter to give the deck overhang, twin props will be fitted, and all the weapons are Shapeways, I will fit as much work features as possible, but definitely sound, and lights, toyed wit the idea of water vapour smoker ,but looking at the output they are far from ideal as it looks more like a missile launch, we shall see.  Hull is balsa and hard wood plus liteply, Island will be plastic card, hull will be covered in fibreglass tissue.  So far its fun as a lot of it can be safely constructed indoors with the messy bits going to the artic survey station (garage)  Hope you like and I will post more as she progresses.
The first image shows the size of the w/t doors against 20p

Chris
There was a large board during building, and to be honest, not to much mess this way, but messy jobs were done outside.
Picture of Leviathan, she sat there for a few years, sold her engines to the Dutch to be used on Karel Dorman then scrapped

Some more work on Leviathan, hull shape is about there, modified stern, the Island i have decided to build in plastic, and the first of the Wyvern air group has visited.  Next week will be hopefully fitting the prop shafts.

Just dropped in on this one and it is looking good so far.
I see what you mean about the Wyvern aircraft - real mean looking.

... and I like your reference to the Arctic survey station - very appropriate  {-) .

Looking forward to seeing more on your build.

Ray.

Just under 4 foot length and 6" beam, scale 1/144, just got some of those nano led you mentioned, just right scale for this model, if I can see them  {-)

Latest on Leviathan
Island basic shape done and bridge lighting installed, only red light as no point in having white light as you would really only be aware of it either tied up at harbour or if you were on the bridge itself, less wiring as well ;) Flight deck lights will be 2mm led running from 3 V so no resistors to clutter up space.

Hi Chris, normal 3 volt LED powered by 3 volts or less, so no need for resistor, I also have 3 volt LED running at 12 volt using a resistor, horses for courses, it made making and planning the deck lights so much easier..  As you can see the power is below 3 volts and the bulb is glowing nicely.

A few showing the current stage of lighting for the Leviathan, apologies for the poor dark shots but it hopefully gives an idea.  Enjoyed the wiring and not a capacitor in sight, bliss, the forward section works but need the main flight deck screwed down to make contacts.  I have chosen Red, Green and Blue more for the effect for the public, than accuracy, although the blue on the round down is correct.

Today is the day that Leviathan got her bottom wet, sits rather nicely and took 4.8 kg to bring her to waterline.  Shafts are next to be fitted and with out boating resuming from 29th I had better get a move on.

Prop shafts and motors fitted, nice thing about this class in 1/1 scale they had no A frames similar to the layout for HMS Hermes, makes life so much easier.

Hi Jon V, yes m8 still all ok here.

I like the way Glynn designs his models. The ones I've built went together really well.
Yours is no exception to the rule. It's looking really good.
There's always something satisfying about getting a hull wet early in the build.
Keep up the good work.

Update on the build, rudder fitted and one prop fitted (other is in the post.  I the shots hopefully in order show my way of doing the lines on the flight deck, paint it white, mask it, paint it grey then remove tape and hopefully it has worked.  Hopefulyy the change to the orginal stern can be made out, more rounded as per the 1/1 version.

Bit more done, final paint job and one prop to fit and thats it for now on th hull, the air group are held on by plastic rod fitted to their base and into holes in the flight deck.  if the ESC arrives then she may have a maiden voyage soon.  quite pleased with the mods to the GG orginal design.

Well at long last Leviathan took to the Seas (docks) and I must admit she performed very well, very speedy if needed but easy to run at scale speed.  Tad more ballast needed other then that no issues.  Hope Glynn Guest is pleased with my modified design.

Rob47,
It's always interesting to see peoples models built from published plans.  Even more interesting if they have made changes to the original design.  I believe some designers take offence at such changes but I've never felt that my creations are perfect and incapable of improvement.

Modifying a published design to suit personal situations and abilities can involve some degree of risk but if the final model works, who is to complain?

Also, did you read the book "H.M.S. Leviathan" by John Winton..?

She's a gorgeous model Rob. I hope the patrons of the bar were as impresses as we are.

Re Glynns comments. A set of plans are a representation of the real thing and therefore can never be perfect. Coupled with the fact that ours is a hobby that can be translated into models built in different materials, with their own quirks, means that even a model built slavishly to a set of plans may not be the same. Skill set and final intentions are also variables.

I always say that as long as you have enjoyed the hobby in your own way and get something constructive out of it then that is what matters most.
