What with the Africans wanting their bronzes back and having to apologise for the sins of our forebears in general, will we be asking the French to do some repairs and restoration on the mast?
I suppose it could be argued that it was not 'fit for purpose' and also wilfully exposed to damage. I am sure there will be a group of lawyers somewhere looking to put a 'group action' together.
Then there is the painting that Napolean ripped down, which is now in the Louvre.
So watch this space.

I'm rather impressed with how a member of the clergy could do so much damage %)

Must have been a Hellfire and Damnation Canon :D

Interesting laminations in the visual remains on such a substantial diameter ........
Are there any Drawing of the actual design? %) was the mast hollow or hollow cored?

My book is in the loft at the moment but from memory, the central core depending on diameter was either solid rounded off or a composite of several trunks fitted together and then the outside was a series of trunks cut to shape as segments and all banded together

Aye. While it was still possible to make one piece masts as late as the Tudor period, masts made up of sections of timber were becoming more common. Mainly because ships were getting bigger. A wee schooner or pinnace could easily have a one piece pine mast even today.
It is interesting to see the colour, and to wonder if it is original or one of many coats added after the battle.
