I thought I should share the latest project with everyone.... HMS Glory 1/72 scale
A bit of Background of the real ship, 1942 the admiralty decided to build some carriers, using non naval practices but easier to build. The plan was to get the carriers built quickly for service with the British Pacific Fleet whilst bigger fleet carriers came online as such the ships had a designed life expectancy of 3 years or to the end of WW2 which ever was sooner.
the 1942 design ended up in 2 classes the Colossus and Majestic Class.
the 1st ship entered service in 1944 and the last ship retired in 2001 (yeah 3 years they said!! ;D ). only 2 managed to serve in WW2 Colossus and Glory, others served in British, Austrailian, Canadian, Dutch, French, Brazilian, Argintinian and Indian Navies.
They were modernised constantly through their life span too, some even ending up with angled flight decks.
HMS Glory, took the Japanese surrender of Hong Kong.
After the war she wasn't sold off but laid up and the newer carriers coming out the shipyards took the lead as the British carrier force were overhauled and repaired after the battles they had been through. On the outbreak of Korea Britain sent the light fleet carriers into action and HMS Glory was reactivated. However, although her sister ships had all been upgraded, Glory didn't so went to Korea still as fitted for WW2 with quad pom-pom guns and single bofors.
The model... I managed to acquire the hull for the carrier, with the deck moulded on and the basic superstructure mouldings from a small company in England. After doing the deal I had to then tell the wife and make some space. I sold some hulls etc that were just gathering dust and told the good lady I had bought a new boat and I had got rid of others to make space (BIG gold star to me). fast forward a few weeks and its the day of delivery, I get a call at work... You said its a model, the delivery man said its a [insert bad word] canoe!! got home to a rather quiet wife... so after some fast talking I managed to sooth things over.....
the model has a length of 115" and approximately 18" wide.
it will have a complement of Hawker Sea Fury's, Fairey Firefly's and also a US Navy S-51 helicopter, that were embarked during Korea.

a sheet of ply and some planes..... you too could have a carrier ok2 {-) {-)
-
;)
-
And I thought the CVA-01 was big- the Glory is 9 inches longer!
Can’t wait to see the build of this beast :-))
-
I a not sure if your wife was laughing behind her hand or groaning!
That looks like a winner Gingyer!
-
HI Ginger remember me Boatman on warships -uk as i built my NIMITZ carrier in 1/144 scale an that was big so your carrier in comin on gigantic an why your missus hiding up ?
chris :-))
-
Thanks guys, it is a bit of a beast.
We worked out the weight recently and reckon it will be about 45kg when ballasted :o
I think the wife was thinking more of if he thinks he has time to build this I better review the list or things I need done around the house
-
Hi all a quick update for the build so far....its been slow due to work commitments
good news was I managed to get a ballast test done.. had to clear the ice to do it... I used some black insulation tape to give me a guide to where the waterline should be.
the ballast came to approx 80Lbs %% %%
I have also been working on the stern and portside gantry openings and boxing those out.
everything is taped into position just now, then i can remove them and start detailing each section.
as you can see there is a good bit of work still to be done on the hull, the sponsons are pretty rough and need some attention.
-
Gingyer
Will your ballast be removable ? so it makes it easy to transport the model ?
Cutout look good.
-
Thanks
I’m using square shaped sash weights so they sit flat in the hull
And can slide easily in and out the hull as required.
-
HI Ginger will there be anymore warship shows up in glassgow now as you used to have some crackin shows

Chris, I wish I could say yes but there is some serious redevelopment work happening in the park.
Until that is done we couldn’t guarantee the space we once had would be available.
It’s a few years behind schedule so time will tell what the park will be at the end up.
-
Lovely work Gingyer! She'll shape up to be a fine model. the 40pounds of ballast will be fun, but using sash weights is a good idea. Are they new or second hand?
-
This is an exciting build. Keep the post coming! :}2
-
Thanks for the comments :-))
I bought brand new sash weights
As most of the ones I found in scrapyards were cylindrical
But the ones I got were square bar so would sit perfectly in the hull
-
I had Glory out for a proper sail to check the motors etc since last time the pond was covered in Ice.
in the video the motors are at about 30% power so no need to worry...

Hi Colin
She looks fantastic sailing rather majestically, she look phenomenal when completed :-))
-
Thanks Nick,
It’s definitely got a presence and sits really well on the water.
-
Was fun watching the wake ripples fade out when the ship stopped.Bet there are some one inch tall plastic people already looking forward to feeling the wind across the flight deck.
-
Glad you liked it Scott,
Trying to locate crew figures but it’s a bit wired there is nothing similar to what they wore
All the figures are ww2 and modern but Siri g the Korean War the equipment etc was a bit
Different
-
She looks wonderful. I love and have always wanted to build a large carrier. Alas, I was lured astray by the Gun club...he will be stunning with a deckload of aircraft. 1/72 scale...plenty of room for motors in them.
-
work is progressing....
a few issues though, the GRP superstructure was all wrong and the combing for it to sit on was worse. so outwith the old and to make my own.....
the old combing was cut away and the hole filled in.
the new opening didn't need to be too big as there was very little going
up into the superstructure.
you can see the difference in height in this picture

I have made the superstructure so that it will be clad in 0.75mm styrene sheet to give it the final finish

-
Fantastic work once again Colin. I didn’t realise how long the tripod mast was used on RN ships- I thought that by this particular ship it would have switched to a lattice mast but it adds a classical feature on this late war carrier.
On another note, I know you and I were after a mobile crane. Well I found a late 1960s Jumbo but in 1/700 scale! I bought the item from Starling Models thinking it would be something to upscale and wow it’s so small! It measures approx 15mm in the two pieces it comes in. At least I’ve got an idea what it looks like but the minute kit doesn’t help being so small to measure from!
-
Yes the tripod mast was still in production until the late 40s I reckon.
It’s the height too from the top deck of the superstructure to the top
Of the mast it’s bigger than the flight deck to the top of the superstructure
I have a small 1/700 kit for Glory it has the crane in it too
I may need to use that as a guide
I also got a couple of 1/72 clarkat tractors and they are small
-
Progress has continued on the superstructure, unfortunately work still gets in the way, I am now having to work in the Shetland isles which means I am away for 3weeks at a time >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(

time for an update....
After a lot of work the deck is now fixed and levelled.
the original hatch openings were not sitting correctly and the deck its self was no where near level. I ended up cutting out the new deck openings and filling and smoothing the deck.

-
That's looking very good, she has a well-bodied amidships hull form accentuated by the bilge keels :-)) ...are the props a pair, or a set?....... Derek
-
Thanks Derek
The props are a pair of 3 blades props as per the original ship.
This being an original Colossus class, they only had a pair of 3 bladed props
Unlike the later Majestic class which has a 3 and a 4 bladed prop fitted.
-
What an elegant model! She's getting betterer and betterer.
-
Thanks Ballastanksian :-))
-
Very tidy work gingyer I think I'll follow along I'd like to build a large warship one day not as big as this. A 3d printer must be a boon but that's more expense and tech im not on entering into.
Dave
-
Unlike the later Majestic class which has a 3 and a 4 bladed prop fitted.
So mismatched props on a two shaft setup? What was the reasoning behind that?
Colin
-
Thanks Dave,
There is a lot of untidy bits hidden.
The 3D printer has been great but I am not able to make the files I get that done by someone.
I did think about it but I think the set up I have is ideal for what I want. I can get better quality
Fittings cheaper than elsewhere also I can print as many as I want.
-
So mismatched props on a two shaft setup? What was the reasoning behind that?
Colin
They increased the power in the engines but the length of the starboard shaft had some significant vibration issues
So they fitted a 4 bladed prop which then allowed for lower revs for the same output.
When I get home I will share a picture of one in dry dock it’s definitely weird.
-
I think what Colin was questioning is what I was alluding to, in the earlier images, both shafts appear :o to have 3 blade right hand rotation propellers
From memory, we saw a model of what appeared to be a Carrier of the same Class at the recent Blackpool Model Show as photographed by Nick B
I'll find the image & post it back here...is has the same/similar hull belly
Derek
-
Derek
That model I took a picture of is the one being built by Gingyer. It’s extremely good :-))
-
ahh... right i get you
the props are handed i took them off for painting and quickly put them on afterwards.
i need to take them back off again so never checked the orientation and just crossed them over but they
are a handed pair :-))
-
You must also admit I have a pretty good eye for detail %) ....when picking out that Carrier at the Blackpool Show and recognising similarities with your vessel {-)
-
very impressive build!
Maybe this picture helps in detailling the island and bridge. The picture is from HMAS Sydney (basically a Majestic class, but the island shape is the same). If you want more pictures, I just have a small selection of HMAS Vengeance and HMAS Sydney pictures in high-res. Just mail me directly.
The Dutch National Archives have a lot of drawings of the (reconstructed) HNLMS Karel Doorman, some of them might still be useful. https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/onderzoeken/archief/4.MST (https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/onderzoeken/archief/4.MST) (Google translate is your friend, look for drawings nr. 3190-3233).
-
Thanks Erik
The website has been super for information on the boat decks and other hull areas since they were the same.
Glory being a colossus class had a different superstructure layout than the Majestic class.
The majestic class had an enclosed bridge and a much smaller bridge gallery.
In the original colossus class the bridge gallery was wrapped around the superstructure and the top deck was open until the 1950s, glory only had hers closed in on the way to Korea before that it had a canvas cover over the bridge.
-
Good to read that the website is helpful,Here is a picture of the bridge of HMAS Vengeance with some people, including my F-i-L in the way ;-). HMAS Vengeance was indeed a Colossus class and even one of the longest surviving vessels of the class.
-
My dad served on HMS Venerable during WWII.
-
My dad served on HMS Venerable during WWII.
HMS Venerable was sold the the Netherlands and served as 'HNLMS Karel Doorman'. The Dutch archives have an impressive set of downloadable plans of her as mentioned above ok2 .
-
Yes Venerable was sold to the Dutch who later sold her to the Argentinians and she became their flagship 25 de mayo.
-
Indeed, the interesting part is that HMS Leviathan provided new machinery for HMS Karel Doorman , prior to her sale to Argentina. HMS Eviathan was scrapped shortly after.
-
They increased the power in the engines but the length of the starboard shaft had some significant vibration issues
So they fitted a 4 bladed prop which then allowed for lower revs for the same output.
When I get home I will share a picture of one in dry dock it’s definitely weird.
A picture of HMAS Sydney, Majestic Class, started life as HMS Terrible, the only Aircraft Carrier built at Devonport Royal Naval Dockyard.
I have read that the issues with excessive vibration were because the Starboard shaft-line in both classes was longer than the Port side, due to the staggered main machinery arrangement and the RN's preference of using 3-bladed propellers. This enabled high shaft RPM.
The issue came to a head when HMS Pioneer (Colossus Class), conducting yard sea trials, suffered a catastrophic Starboard shaft failure, resulting in substantial damage in one of the machinery spaces. The solution, as you have stated above Gingyer, was to fit 4-bladed propellers to this shaft so the rpm could be reduced whilst maintaining required power/thrust.
Nige
-
I have NEVER seen that before. How interesting. I wonder if any other ships dealt with shaft vibration in such a manner. I am aware that props were often changed to address the issue, but, at least in USN, it was done on both port and starboard at the same time. The South Dakota class battleships ran different props, four blade on the inboard shafts, I believe, and five blade on the outboard.*(Maybe the other way around, not enough coffee yet).
-
Yes, very interesting indeed.
Colin
-
HMAS Melbourne showing the same propeller arrangement. She began life as HMS Majestic.
Nige
-
What interesting stern openings.
-
What interesting stern openings.
Each ship was different too which has been weird and they were changed a lot so has been
Some serious investigation to find the correct layout for Glory and also the catwalk above changed from ship to ship.
I also found out that the 2 buldges on each corner were designed for depth charge racks to
Be fitted to the ships.
-
And there was me thinking they were for Oerlikons!
So if so fitted, they had to find room for ASDIC and it's operators etc as well as their intended role as Carriers? Blimey!
-
And there was me thinking they were for Oerlikons!

I have seen drawings of the Australian carriers and they showed Bofors fitted there.
-
They look like classic AA gun bulges.
-
I have seen drawings of the Australian carriers and they showed Bofors fitted there.
You are correct Gingyer. Certainly during her time off Korea and later as a Vietnam War troop transport, HMAS Sydney had 40mm Bofors mounts fitted in those locations. Mainly to counter hostile surface-craft, given the poor arcs of fire which would severely limit usefulness against aircraft.

yes, It could be a simple re-scale
-

NO, my fingers were complaining a bit after the radar {-)
-
Is that from being singed or holding diddy parts?
-
a bit of both to be honest %)
-
a quick up date and I found a bit of a disaster...
the funnel was too big on the length but the height and width were ok.
the length was pushing the director tub over the top of the rear PomPom gun and it just looked wrong.... so I asked my friend to print me a new funnel and made the supports for the director tub.
I have also started fitting the railings, ladders and other details
