Title: Mountfleet Puffer reworked for handicaped people
Post by: GolemXIV on July 23, 2021, 11:41:47 am
Maybe some people remember Martin's build of a Mountfleet Clyde Puffer for me, it is some ago. The last time it was sailing on water is a decade ago. My handicap makes it impossible to work a rc Transmitter. But i don't want that poor ship to sit in its warm box. Some 3 month ago i bought myself a Quadstick, it is a mouth controlled Joystick for PC and Console. It is adaptible to almost  any software and game. It is possibel to adapt it for rc controll. But there is quite some stuff to do to translate computer signals to rc signals.
A few days ago i found these two videos on YouTube

Sadly i cant put in any pictures.

You need:
Some sort of suitible Controller, in my case a Quadstick. A XAC, Xbox adaptive Controller to put the Quadstick into. You need an Arduino, USB schield, a power bank with two usb ports. You need some code for the arduino, given by the video maker. Then you attach a transmitter in teacher mode to this setting. Now the Arduino translates the steering orders into ppm signals.
I got some of the stuff i need and the rest will follow.
Greeting from Hamburg and my name is Jan

I'm always impressed with alternative interfaces for different kinds of needs!  The computer / Arduino type stuff baffles me though.

Sorry for stupid question but for a puffer, presumably forwards, back, left and right for control:. What's the need for PC programming?  In your pic of your x-y mouthpiece, the same control could just be piggybacked onto a regular transmitter with little but DIY wiring for a separate joystick located at your convenience?

If you are looking for parts I believe Mike at Model Radio Workshop here in the UK specialises in customised transmitters and parts.

Thx for the answer.
I got half of the stuff allready here thats why i stick to my plan. Rudder, speed, lights and smoke generator are the function. I believe there are easyer ways, but this way i dont have to spend to much money.

Jan !!! How very good to hear from you, my friend!   :-)

Good to see you are still model boating despite your setbacks, have you stared the boat conversion as yet,
or do you not need to do anything to the boat, only the Tx?

Kindest regards,
 Martin

Hi mate  :-))
only the Tx side needs my attention. The boat needs new batteries and we will regrease the propshaft. Splendid work done by you and bradders, the Puffer is still in good conditions.

It looks a great rendition of a puffer!  I'm slowly building one freelance.  I will copy some of those pics as they show some details I need to scale from.
