The Longest Day has been on TV several times in the last few weeks....
Questions: The Wellingtons & C-47's that towed the gliders, once they released, was that 'job done' & turn back?
Or did they have another role afterwards?
( Did they run empty as full power was required for towing? )
.... asking for a friend! %)

Recently I have been watching some good y tube programs on Easy company and interviews with Dick winters. Also on u tube look for the history traveller some good items on the Normandy sites.

IIRC the ex-bomber glider tugs were mostly Stirlings converted into the 'tug/freighter' role. My Dad was in the unit that did a lot of the conversions at RAF Aldergrove.
Some were used as paradrop aircraft as well, but I've no idea if they did both jobs on the same flight.

Apparently the tugs released their glider, turned back and after 2 miles released their tow rope before returning to base. Tugs then carried out further sorties.
