Title: Getting back into building - new member here
Post by: tscoupland on October 30, 2021, 11:12:09 am
Hello everyone
I have been following Radiojoe and his brilliant builds over on Deans Marine website, customer builds, he inspired me to have a go at kit for my first build.
So I have just ordered an HMS Kelly kit from Deans.
I will be adapting it to be HMS Lightning, my uncle 'Jimmy' perished when she went down in 1943, so this will be sort of a memorial build for the family.

Any hints and tips welcome.
I could start a build log, but the entries would be very few and far between until I get the hang of it, would that work?

If you go over 24 hours in a day there are charges.
Tonight is the exception to the rule.

Title: building HMS Lightning- photos

Hi Martin

Thanks for the photos. The one of Lightning looks similar to the one from the HMS Lightning website by Eric Gilroy based on the documents by his  father George Gilroy.

there is also a gem of information from that website.

The Refit at Chatham.....
The refit took nearly two months and was complete on 7 November. She had been updated with modern electronics, upgraded anti aircraft guns and my 4 inch gun was replaced with a set of torpedo tubes and the old war horse had a new coat of paint - a very distinctive, fancy, black and white camouflage. She looked very tiddly. No one then realised that she and many of the crew had less than six months to live.

Reference for HMS Lighting

Amazingly there is some actual film footage of her at sea.
