Bonjour,
In France, we have a steam race organized by Fabrice Bretagne names "Trophée Anton". Rules are simple, 500 meters, no flash steam, 8 bar (120 PSI) maximum.
My previous boat having been badly beaten, I embarked on a new steam speed project with improbable elements, a 60 year old Chris Craft hull rescued from the trash, a double burner Babcock boiler that weighs two arms and a very powerful speed machine.

My Scott boiler is too heavy, I have bought another one which is twice lighter and I hope as efficient :

First test with a 60 mm propeller, second test with a 70 mm propeller :

After these tests, I have decided to move the boiler back in order to raise the bow a little and lower the bow wave that threatens to enter the boat. To be tested as soon as possible :

Bonjour,
I go on working hard to try to win the Anton Trophy.
This video shows that I had not mastered the liquid phase, it is liquid that the gas reaches the nozzle, which thwarts its operation at full power :
https://youtu.be/SpcHCAh09Pw
This one the solution, solving the problem but generating another issue, 90 PSI in the gas tank, a shame because I went into the liquid phase because it was freezing !

I am currently isolating it
The next Anton Trophy is on May 15 th...!

Bon courage :-))

Bonjour Phil,
Perhaps will you come to Vap'IDF 2022 ok2 ?
-
c'est possible, :-))
-
Raphael, good luck with the challenge. Would you share with us why you believe the the pressure rose so high in the gas tank?
-
This boat seems promising with the 60 mm propeller !
with Eric's backup , you should be a winner! :-))
Attaboy ! You'll make it !
-
Bonjour Yves,
Thanks for yout support.
With your knowledge and your amazing collection, you should be one the pillars of the French steam team and come to Vap'IDF and Atlantica :-))
-
Bonjour Raphaël!
What is the steam engine you are using? :-)
-
Bonjour Martin,
This machine was a gift made by a friend based on the main principles of the steam specialists not using flash steam, as we are not allowed to exceed 8 bar / 120 PSI.
It is a twin 4cm3 single acting machine : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXmIIHvJ1ss
Another friend also offered me one, based on the same features but not same shape : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2rkHKkDQ1U
I will install it in a planing hull to try to reach this speed : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76FCX153mys
A friend has installed a Stuart SUN machine in his speed boat, I hope I see it soon.
Besides this, a mono is also a good alternative, see this beast at 2 bar / 30 PSI : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZmmz7mPYPk

Rapheal, why no flash steam, which can work at 120 psi, I would like to come and try with one of my boats though :-)) Your engine sounds "tres bon"
-
Raphael, good luck with the challenge. Would you share with us why you believe the the pressure rose so high in the gas tank?
I'd also like to know that and why there seems to be a lot of steam discharging on the gas tank?
-
Bonjour Dave,
Sorry for this late answer, Calin is right, the heat comes from the steam coming from little leaks of the machine and the oil separator.
I don't need it as I use a liquid phase gas management which should maintain 2,5 bar in the tank, not more than 6 (manometer limit) !
This is why I have just installed a sheet of wood to insulate it, to be tested... It never ends {:-{
Phil, neither I nor any one around me has any experience of flash steam, and I think that we may not improvise on this technique.
Do you think it's worth implementing this technique which requires the fine tuning of complex accessories such as water and oil pumps to reach just 8 bar N
Furthermore, the Anton trophy will not allow it as it is supposed to be opened to any steam passionate not necessarily having great skills or great means : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysNQ-Prq8II
If you experienced it, please share with us because I see nothing recent about it :-))

Raphael......
1. why do the boat Captains not try & steer & turn closer to the buoys or turn markers?........some appear to forget to turn >>:-( ........
2. who is the Captain of Lve Vitto 2, or boat No 5? :-X

I would love to understand the rules of the race.
It looks as if boat No. 5 I VA VITE 2 (or I "go quickly" 2) got cheated at the start.
Who won??
Great contest. Good luck this year.
-
A personal quest by Marcel to take the Cup away O0 to his home for a year, however I suspect the No 5 vessel Lve Vitto 2 may be owned by Patron of this annual Cup Challange race
Maybe Rafferties Rules?, but the French may have a different word to best describe
Here is the link to the 2018 Cup Race

Bonjour,
The rules are quite simple :
- Race of 500 meters
- Any boat may race but no flash steam and maximum pressure 8 bar / 120 PSI
"I va vite 2" N°5 belongs to my friend Alain and is the almost twin of mine "Liva V" n°5, same hull, same JMC compound
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3YMJIslBEI&t=128s
but I have a simple horizontal boiler not powerful enough to maintain 8 bar when Alain has a double Scott which is perfect for the race.
I regularly start faster but then loose pressure and speed... Besides this, when she operates correctly, "Ky", long bmack hull is the fastest and won 2018.
As you have noticed it, our hulls are not planning so need to be as long as possible to be fast and our rudders are quite small, so, to prevent any accident I was sunk, I will show it to you) wa take a lot of space to turn. And I won't say that our vouw is not the best ok2
