Title: Mayhem at Wicksteed 2022
Post by: html on November 17, 2021, 10:11:21 pm
Will Mayhem be going ahead next year, I am interested as I might be able to make it.

I know the park has had trouble, but did not know what the situation was with running an event there.

If we all have our boosters and are sensible, and keep a beady eye on what is going on around the world and be a bit more reactive to be on the safe side (where it is wise to be) then I do not see an issue with events happening next year.

Being sensible and being mindful will help us along into the new normal.

I might be in a more constructive mode next year so might bring work to do if I can find a tent.

Hi Martin et. al,

500+miles driving each-way is still a bit too far to travel for me as the maybe the "upper north" Scottish contingency, especially in these times plus still have a vulnerable person and difficulties with work which take precidence over hobbies.  But I wish you guys well and hope it's a good and respectful event.  I would like to get to an event at some point to meet in person rather than at the other side of a computer.  I'm not as bad as I bash out on the keyboard!

Good luck with it,

Rich

Title: Re: Mayhem 2022

Hi Phil

Despite what it says on the camping site website section I know that the park isn’t officially open until Easter weekend so I think that’s when the phone call bookings can start as the park is currently operating on a skeleton staff until then. I think it doesn’t help that Easter is late this year too.
I’ll see if we can get a discount but I can’t guarantee it this year but it shouldn’t the usual price as it isn’t a bank holiday weekend this year. I find out what I can- the club has a committee meeting this Friday to discuss things so I will see if anyone knows of any problems.

Managed to speak to the receptionist to see how booking camping happens now. It is all booked via the website and you can add extra cars if needed. I can’t get a discount for this year but I may have a chance next year once I know how the camping booking system works- fingers crossed I can be briefed by the new receptionist when she has time.
It didn’t help that my point of contact has just changed at the last minute so I’m re-briefing them with all the details but it’s all booked in.
As always tables will be at a premium so four will be reserved for the Scottish contingent and a couple for Steamboat Phil. If you can bring your own tables it would be most appreciated.
Model Boats magazine will have an events mention in the next issue.
Any trader always welcome to display and set up shop, let me know if you have any particular needs, I already know of  Ron Dean’s requirements if he is willing to display but others please message me if you want to know more.
Last thing… picture of the lake so far :-))

Many thanks for the update Nick, much appreciated, we will still be able to have a Mayhem camping area as normal (marked off as usual).
I shall be booking tomorrow and we will be there from the Thursday so I can rebuild the pond for our glorious one legged leader (sorry Martin) to get around  :-))
And this year I have some members of my club coming along.....yeah.....
Keep smiling........no toffees or chew sweets though ... {-) {-) {-) {-)

Please DO NOT BOOK YET.
WEBSITE STATES
Under 6m
£15 off peak per night
£25 peak.
If you put the start and finish date in, it counts the days,  not the nights.
Ie i will stay thurs (26th) night till sunday (29th), 3 nights. 2 x £15, 1 × £25. Total £55. Booking via the website adds an EXTRA £25!
NICK is aware and will contact the park.

Title: Re: Mayhem 2022
Post by: raflaunches on April 25, 2022, 07:04:53 pm
So essentially if you are staying until Sunday book your campsite for Saturday as you have until 10am the next day to vacate the pitch. It’s a weird way of doing things and I will be messaging the park’s management to mention this potential confusion.
So basically:
If like Klunk you are staying at the park from Thursday to Sunday you need to book Thursday to Saturday as you are covered for Saturday night until 10am Sunday morning. I don’t know why they have set up the booking like this as most campsites (and I’m sure the old Wicksteed system) are booking for the amounts of nights you stay. The receptionist did say that if there was a problem you can still correct it when you collect your camping ticket/etc from reception. They are still recovering and got completely new staff to man the park post Covid which also hasn’t helped. Any problems please message me. :-))

Ok, 2 weeks to go......so let's go through the weekend!
I will be camping from Thursday, with a few friends.
Friday is setup day for Mayhem and Wicksteed crews.
Anyone can help on this!!!
PLEASE NOTE.
ONLY DESIGNATED PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE WATER. If you sink or break down, please find a Mayhem Marshal. We WILL  be hiding, but ask at the Wicksteed club tent, tea tent or Steamboat Phils tent.

The serious (i use that word loosely) Mayhemmers, who camp the weekend, normally turn up. By 2pm, Phil's gazebo will be  in the main lake, while he "gets the straps"!
Help will be on hand to put up all tents and Gazebos, just ask.
SATURDAY
sailing commences once people get there, don't be afraid, just put the boats in the water. The car park is 70yds from the water. Trolleys are available, but if you need help, again ask at the tea tent.
For the die hards, there will be frequency control, normally near the tea tent!  If using the old frequencies,  please bring a peg with your name on it to replace the frequency peg!!!
Tea and coffee, and maybe some biccies, will be in the tea tent. Please see signs for this!!
Please respect all other boats on the water. If you do collide, please say sorry.
There will be IC BOAT demos, by Andy and Richard. These will be announced. For safety, we ask for all boats to be either removed from the water, parked up at the harbour
or lakeside somewhere safe.
STEAMBOAT PHIL will do straight running demos, ably supported by Steamboat Apprentice Steph.
There will be sail bys of edwardian/victorian warships over the weekend, and hopefully some lovely yachts!!!
As usual, for those staying late friday, a fish and chip run will happen, and Saturday will be the standard BBQ. we do ask NOT to bring disposable BBQS, MAYHEM do have a normal BBQ for use by all staying. Myself, or someone else will also cook for you.

Last note, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, IS ANYONE ALLOWED TO MENTION THE WEATHER. NONE, NIL, ZIP, NADA. DON'T GO THERE!

Hi Ray

No booking required, just turn up and sail or display and have some fun.
There is no car park pass, whilst entrance to Model Boat Mayhem is free there is a car park fee which tops out at £6 per car for all day. You’ll need to pay the fee before you leave at the car park machines in main reception area. I’ll will mark on a map to show the locations of these machines in my next post. All you need to pay for car park is your car registration number and a debit/credit card. Unfortunately you can’t pre-pay the fee so when you decide to leave the park you will need to pay at the machines. The entire car parking system is covered by an ANPR system which photos your registration number on entrance and exit so it knows you’ve paid.
The fee goes towards the park and it’s upkeep and varies on your stay, usually the first 20 mins are free but the absolute maximum is £6 and that covers all day.

Hi All

I'm not a member of any club or anything, just wanted to confirm if it was ok to just turn up with a boat or two and join in sailing sometime over the weekend?

I've seen the earlier post by Klunk, but as a newbie to any kind of group sailing event are there any other things I should be aware of i.e. etiquette or do's & don'ts?
Title: Re: Mayhem 2022
Post by: SteamboatPhil on May 25, 2022, 05:40:43 pm
It is indeed ok to turn up, etiquette…..um this is mayhem
Do……..have lots of fun
Don’t……….forget to say hello and introduce yourself,

It is a great place to meet fellow boaters and make new friends  :-))

And Do be prepared for a weekend of…..well……Mayhem  :D
And Don’t be surprised at anything that happens  {-)

For those coming for the day only be sure to pay before you leave. Wicksteed Park car parking is now done by a private company. If you do not pay before you leave you will get a £60-£80 fine.

So please if your only coming for the day, make sure you use the ticket machine on leaving. If your camping I believe the car parking is including.

I love local to wicksteed and quite a few still get caught out by the car parking system.

Parking payment information-

Easiest pay machine to locate is by the Wickies Theatre on the corner- park in car park directly opposite or on the grassed areas. All you need is your reg number and a debit/credit card.

Alternatively you can pay via the phone or app

And finally these are the mayhem signs to follow, easiest method just follow the tarmac road to the lake  :-))

My first visit and really enjoyed it. Met Klunk, Steamboat Phil and David (DKW). Thanks to Steph for showing me the shortcut from the camping area where I parked.

Great photos Martin and nice slo-mo of the coming together.

Had to smile when the geese and goslings decided to show whose lake it was!

Great to see everyone enjoying themselves and in good weather too. Model boating comes to life again! Would love to have been there but spent all day today returning fron Greece on first holiday since 2019. Journey was OK until we encountered the QuEasyjet bit. Rather wished I'd spent 4.5 hours at Wicksteed than on a delayed aerial appliance.

Well I’ve suitably dried out now! A few drinks has warmed me up and the BBQ cooked by Klunk has helped. For anyone not in the now I’ve inspected the bottom of the lake and found it very wet! {-)
Good thing I bought some spare clothes to get changed into and some very surprising developments- my phone survived as did my van keys, haven’t yet tried the camera or the transmitters but hopeful! {-)
Hilarious but very wet :-))

That's my first mayhem attended and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it and in particular what a fantastically organised event it is. A massive thank you to all those involved. :-)) All the info provided, maps, directions, instructions & signage was spot on. It's amazing how many much bigger professional events totally fail at that. That was actually a big part in my spur of the moment decision to frantically charge the batteries and make the 270 mile round trip, it really made the whole thing very easy to attend. It almost feels like I should be paying someone! Joking aside, as someone not a member of a local club, is there a way to contribute a donation towards the running of the event?

I've never sailed anywhere with more than one other boat in the water so this really was an eye opener and fantastic fun. 3 boats sailed, 3 flat batteries and 0 collisions, not bad for a first time. Although after a while my eyes were spinning trying to keep track of everything %%
Already crossing off the days till next year :D

As MrsJ and I were visiting relatives in Titchmarsh (7 miles away) I managed to slip away for the morning while they did flower arranging. had a delightful time looking at the boats on view and managed to get a couple of queries answered. I'm not a club member but like to dabble, and have been inspired to get on with some of my 'one day' projects. Now I just need to learn all about radio control!. I don't know why I bothered with my camera, everyone else has produced some far better pics. Do we have next years dates? MrsJ is talking about May in the Lake District and I need to get in first.
Thanks for a great morning.

Well home and dry and hungry and knackered!

.... how do you know a 'Mayhem at Wicksteed' is over?!

Face & hands tired from smiling and hand shaking,
car full of grass and slight whiff of Goose poop,
boot full, back seat full, bags full ... of just Stuff,
home seems a LONG drive away,
too tired to think about dinner, takeaway it is then,
 unloading the car .......
huge pile of stuff in middle of living room,
 lots of happy memories!

 ..... and

Just got home, totally shattered!
First, a massive thanks to Wicksteed club members for all the tidying and hosting. WICKSTEED committee for running and organising.
To steamboat Phil, the Scottish Contingent, the Newbies and all the peeps that turned up and sailed, yakked and generally made MAYHEM!
ALSO, to my crew from Luton, for generally helping me out, making my life a little easier, and looking after me (suplying tea and breakfast!)

Hi everyone

Just about recovered after a power nap!
What a weekend! Had so much fun catching up with everyone and meeting new friends.
The weather behaved itself (although one point it did raise a hand and say I’m still watching you! %% )
Some fantastic models on display and some brilliant demos by Andy, Poppy, Richard, Phil, and Keith.
Great to see some new faces this year and of putting a face to the name on the forum. I’d like to thank Martin, Ruth and Gina for the excellent tea, coffee, and lovely bacon rolls. Big thanks to all that helped set up and run the weekend- Klunk, Steamboat Phil, Andy N, just to name a few. Great to see the Scottish lads make a return this year and yes we had some fun trying the  ‘polinka’ on Saturday night!
I’d like to thank our three traders this year who displayed their latest wares- many thanks to Deans Marine, Drydock 3D, and Palaform. Great to see your support.
I’d like to say a big thank you to all clubs and individuals who exhibited over the weekend-
Luton MBC
Stevenage MBC
PAMBC
N&DMBC
Coventry MBC
Blackheath MBC
King Lear MBC
Welwyn MBC
Model Hovercraft Association
The Scottish Lads
Geoff Dixon
Ballastankian
RNLI team (Martin and Sue)
JohnG
James (Suffolk1928)
TonyH
Are just a few I can remember off top of my head, some many more who showed their excellent models to us all.
I’d like to say a special thanks to Rob and Dave who helped me after my little incident on Saturday which will probably earn me a few extra nicknames but I’m most grateful for your assistance. I am walking better now :-))
And finally I want to thank my club for all the work put in putting up gazebos, signs, and putting up with my stupidity and idiocy!
On behalf of WPMBC, the Mayhem committee and myself, thank you all :-)) :-)

It was (as can only be expected from previous experience) a fab weekend! Model boaters are a friendly lot but the Wicksteed folk are finest specimens, so welcoming and friendly and knowledgeable. I found out that a dear friend of mine had died during Sunday morning which saddened me but being amongst you lovely people kept my heart warm all the way home until I had to face the info and his family etc.

If you want a weekend tonic then I recommend the Mayhem at Wicksteed show. It enthuses you to get the tools back out, it is a fun time and it's a good excuse to get some nice grub down your cakehole!

Talking of which, the amount of cake made available from the kitchens of Ruth and Gina as well as others was amazing along with their stalwart efforts with the urn and tea bags!

I will be at next year's show with working complete models!

P.S. I must note that it is with sadness to have heard that Klunk's brown Waders also perspired. After years of attack from mice's, he could not keep them water tight anymore. RIP Brown waders.

I would have thought it would be down to the individuals, in published photos, to put their names (or forum names) up should they wish to do so.

ie that's me on the left of the group on (such and such photo).

There was quite a bit of culinary delights being offered around the lake this year,
..... next year, there is definitely going to be a cake / food competition of some sort!

( I challenge anyone to beat steaming hot  bacon rolls on a chilly Sunday morning! )   {-)

'I was at Wicksteed [Sunday] with SMBC, and running my orange / white nitro powered GPL tunnel hull.
I was optimistically wearing a head-strap GoPro to capture some footage of it, but all I got was the far bank and some sky as I knocked the camera as I put it on..... '   {:-{

Yup. I filmed it run before the rain arrived. I'll upload and publish it sometime later this week. It would be helpful if he could provide some info. I think it was running on an OS20 which I thought was quite small considering how quickly it was moving.

Lovely, thank you. Feel free to contact me about it through here or facebook (Andy Nightingale, we spoke yesterday) - that belongs to my mate Steve.
It's a GPL tunnel hull with an OS 21XM outboard, it moves a lot quicker than that on an open lake!

That’s Keith’s ‘Potential Threat’, would have to get in contact with him or Mr Steamboatphil for full details but it’s his design straight runner, with a 30cc long stroke JAP engine. Runs around 800rpm on tickover for around 10mph. Great fun to catch that one, it’s got so much torque and mass it wants to take you with it {-)

Saunders-Roe SR.N6 Mark 6  Hovercraft at Wicksteed

What a superb model.  :-))

I had a trip in the 1;1 scale version at Hovershow 50 in 2009.

Thanks from the very far north for photos!!

...Also I was wondering with the hovercraft models if anyone knows Larry Hodgson these days (I think he's down in Pompey area so a bit far to go to Northampton)?  He's a friend of my late father and if anyone is in contact with him these days, please pass my regards on as "Rogers son".

Martin asks...."What are "arms" for, as seen on the model?"

To find the Goodies, or the Baddies O0  ....by SONAR array ......[sound navigation and ranging]

Even mounted on the Deck, hence above the water, they were classed a "Below Water Equipment'....so being an 'Above Water Weapons' person, I had no involvement :P

The Adamcraft dinghies look interesting and seem to sail quite well. Building in clinker, in any scale is difficult, well done to the builders, impressive. However it would be good to see more sailing craft at the event.

Via email to Mayhem ....

Martin, the Vosper is mine, I built it a couple of years ago and Wicksteed was its second time in the water, mainly because I wanted to try it in more open water, the size of the local canal basin being too restricted to allow it to turn round or open up.  I built it as a follow-up to my 1/12 scale scratch Whaleback, having enjoyed the experience of researching a WWII fast launch whose history seems to have been forgotten, producing a hard chine, double-diagonal planked hull and thinking of ways to produce such details as turret moulding. At the risk of boring you stiff, here is the full history:

Vosper Motor Torpedo Boat 233.
Built by Chris Ellis.

This 1/12 scale scratchbuilt model represents Vosper MTB 233 between launch in January of 1942 and April of 1943, under the command of Lt. Jamie L Fraser RNVR, who was killed in action against 3 German armed trawlers off the Hook of Holland on the night of 18th April 1943.
This boat sailed with the 21st MTB Flotilla out of HMS Beehive (Felixstowe), CO Captain Peter Dickens DSO, MBE, DSC, the great grandson of Charles Dickens. See Ref.1.
This boat was one of the first Vosper series to be equipped with three Packard V12 marine engines of 1250 HP each (no, not Merlins), plus two Ford V8 engines for silent running at 6 knots.  The Packards gave a performance of 38.9 knots at 2400 rev/min or 35.9 knots continuously at 2200 rev/min.  Carrying 2683 gallons of 100 octane petrol in two main tanks, the range was up to 400 miles at 20 knots.  Overall displacement was 47 tons, 55 tons wet with all armaments.
Vosper, under the Chief Engineer Peter DuCane, designed and built the so-called 70’ MTB just before WW II, but in fact the boat hulls were 70’6” long and revised to 71’0” in 1941. Including the 18” diameter anti-cavitation plates above each propeller, the overall length was actually 72’6”.  Boat 233 was built under licence and Vosper control by Berthon Boat Company at Lymington.  Originally the design included two transom-mounted rudders and a keel mounted fixed fin, but early in their service, all boats were retro-fitted with a third, central rudder to improve the turning circle, especially at high speed.
Armament:  2 x 21” torpedo tubes fired by explosive charge (fired at a boat speed of 12 knots), 2 x 0.5” Vickers water-cooled machine guns (700 rounds/min each) in a Vickers MkV hydraulic turret, 2 x 0.303” Lewis machine guns, CSA (chloro-sulphonic acid) smoke generator, 2 x standard RN depth charges.        Although up to 8 depth charges could be carried, their combined weight adversely affected trim, so only 2 were usually carried, to be dropped in the path of pursuing enemy vessels, usually during hasty retreats!
Until July of 1943, 233 was painted overall grey, but during a refit it was repainted in the Peter Scott designed dazzle camouflage and a 20mm Oerlikon cannon was added to the foredeck.
Boat 233 completed War service mainly in the North Sea and was disposed of in June of 1945.

The model:
This was built with nominal reference to a 1/24 semi-scale Model Boat/John Lambert design, but accurate detail, enough to redraw the main frames, photographs and Vosper drawings were obtained from Ref.2.
The hull is planked with scale mahogany planks (1050) over ply frames.  Power is supplied by 3 x 380kV 5060 brushless motors running at 25 volts, giving an overall output of just under 2.5 kW.
Every detail of the boat is scratch built with the exception of the gun bodies which are 3D printed by Shapeways.
At 72.5” long the model weighs 26 kg overall, including 8.6 kg of lead ballast and 2 kg of LiPos to achieve the correct waterline.  The only drawback to such a large model is transportation and launching!
Built October 2019 to July 2020.

Chris.
