Title: Price of glass!
Post by: LightermanII on April 18, 2022, 12:26:13 pm
Just finishing off a model for a mate and the model is built from card and paper and bits of wire. its not a floater but a dust collector so I am going to put it in a glass case and the price of that is now very scary!

Consider using acrylic or even Lexan sheet. Much lighter, safer, easier (and safer) to work with, and I am guessing cheaper.

Alas the plastics market has cottoned on... the prices for the same 5 bits came out at £4 cheaper and required £7 of P&P..
I prefer glass but plastic does scratch well and looks like a day in thick fog and covers up the duff modelling.

Got a double glazing company nearby?
they scrap glass and pay for the privilege, could you use old window glass?

I was offered a couple of sheets from a chap at the model engineering club and I got on with the cutting and while older glass is somewhat harder to cut and there is no room for scaredy cats you have to really have to go for it but some times you get a ragged edge and some work with grossing pliers helps its the "bloom" in the glass that sometimes messes the effect. I will call a couple of double glazers and see what they have.
Thanks for the thoughts.

I did see one guy who just put an upside down fish tank over his model. He covered the ugly glass joints with edging plastic.  :}

Thanks Chas %%
I did try that as a kid with a gold fish bowl after I had seen the first moon walk.. There were a lot of dead goldfish in the area and A&E were rammed with kids in goldfish bowls and saucepans.
