At least you could carry it. Eons ago, I was staying in a hotel that was being used by BT for training. The instructors all has car phones. At dinner one night we all collapsed laughing when one of them was told "Excuse me sir your car is ringing" 8)

Andy's excellent write up!
May the 27th to 28th sees the annual Model Boat Mayhem forum sailing weekend at Wicksteed park, Kettering. This is the largest dedicated model boat meeting in the UK, usually seeing over 300 attendees from all over the country.
This is a completely free sailing event, which means that the lake is available for use all day on the Saturday and Sunday with few restrictions. The event is free to get in to, however the park does charge £6 a day parking fee. Refreshments are available and there is a barbecue on the Sunday morning, there is also camping available which is booked through the park’s website.
All forms of model boat are welcome, though the only IC powered models allowed are those from Stevenage Model Boat Club for a 30 minute demo each day. Please don’t bring any other IC models intending to run them, we shall have to disappoint you.
There is a bring and buy for all forms of models and related items, and if needed there is plenty of room for gazebos lakeside.
Aside from the IC demo, there is also demonstrations of Straight Running boats - models with no radio fitted that are sent between two people in the lake to score points between markers. These are just two examples of things to see at what is an amazing weekend.
In addition to the model show, there’s also the park amusements for the whole family. Rc cars are welcome in the park outside the lake area, though we can accept no responsibility for them.

Good news to add, those who have been to Mayhem the last couple of times may be aware of my mate who sells brand new SLA batteries at prices vastly below rrp - he’s going to be there again this year with a very good stock. He’s just given me seven boxes of batteries to store, mostly 7, 14 and 26ah and all 12v. Don’t know what else he has to bring but we’ll see in due course
As usual, they’ll be for sale from my stand in the middle of the lakeside :-))

We have a very good stock of brand new lead acid batteries for sale, these always sell super quick and will be available from Friday night at the campsite to order (the Luton club usually grab a load before general sale %) )

If I can only come on one day to Wicksteed - it is a 250 mile round trip and there is a local steam fair the same weekend - which day would you recommend for most action? I am guessing Saturday as Sunday will start shutting down earlier.

Information regarding Mayhem parking
Don’t worry it’s good news!
So we are parking in the same place so no worries there but the entrance will be in a different location to where it has been in previous years. We ask you follow the Mayhem signs for the parking area and abide by the speed limits within the park which are 10mph on the road and 5mph on grassed areas. Please respect the marshaller and we ask you to print off a copy of the Mayhem Parking Permit if possible, we do have some to issue out if needed. Be aware that the front row this year is reserved for blue badge holders. We will have 5 trolleys available for transporting models/tables/etc to the lake side. Campers: we have a large area cordoned off for our use with Mayhem signs up to indicate the area. You will see the French detachment and Luton Club members already in residence.
Toilet facilities are located next to the hexagon cafe close to the Mayhem parking area. And please don’t forget to pay for your parking when you leave the park either via the machine kiosk in the main complex or via the app.
Have fun and see you all this weekend :-))

I believe that RC 'Aircraft' are not allowed in the grounds of Wicksteed Park !! I know there has recently been an overhead photograph of the lake uploaded. I do not know the origin of the photo or if this was with permission. I suggest that anyone intending/hoping to fly 'anything' should seek permission from the Park Management. It's essential to preserve the reputation of Martin and the Mayhem team and the Wicksteed park Model Boat Club.

Number 1 - never cross your knees - it places undue stress between the new ball & socket :(( Number 2 - never fall down - you could pop the titanium ball from the plastic socket {:-{ Number 3 - never fall down - you could smash the titanium spike out of the bone where it was inserted [into femur] >:-o
No's 2 & 3 I suspect would be a little painful....& I have never crossed my legs in the past 70 ++ something years

Well I was going to run the Seaducer 38 in the demo tomorrow, unfortunately it’s developed a flat spot on one of the bearings so that’s off - thankfully no damage whatsoever so I’m buying a lottery ticket and bringing something else.

No knowledge of these builds??... are the bearings conventional full stainless ZZ ballraces?... My experience outside of model application or use, has been in a requirement of a total non-magnetic signature and a speed limit set by the limit of hardness that can be attained with use of the 316 stainless balls

The engine in question is a CMB 45 V5, which has a steel bearing at the flywheel with a polyamide retainer, an internal larger bearing with a steel retainer and needle rollers in the big end of the rod. Fairly convinced it was the large bearing that developed the flat spot.
It’s done incredibly well to be honest, I bought it three years ago and I’ve probably run that boat more than all my others, this is the first time it’s needed a bearing change.

My wife and I had a wonderful day, it being only our second time at this event. It was good to catch up with those we met last year and to make new acquaintances.
Thanks to all involved who made this day go so smoothly.

wow what a great show. Mayhem has grown a lot since the last show. At one time I counted 26 boats on the water at the same time. Big thanks to all the orginsers and Martine for a great show. John

A really, really good weekend!
Fantastic weather both days .... saw a couple of 'lobsters' walking back to their cars yesterday... %) Huge turnout yesterday 200-300 boaters & a very high footfall from the public all day.
Huge debt of gratitude to the Wicksteed Model Boat Club for inviting us again this year, thank you. Special thanks to Nick, Steve, Nigel for slave driving all the workers to get everything done, thank you. the lake, path and surrounding areas look great, as always. Talking of the path, special thanks goes out to Ivan that Sxxx Shovelled all weekend clearing behind all the malevolent geese, ( that couldn't understand the large numbers of people but no free bread )! SteamBoatPhil, Klunk, Andy, lady Poppy .... .... Rock Stars in the model boat world! 💖💖💖 Thanks to Jag ( Palaform Hovercraft ) for the deadlock hovercraft for Gina. The Hovercraft boys had a GREAT weekend and was always on the water before anyone could find their ear defenders on! {-) Thanks for everyone that came, lovely to see you all. Thank you too if you were silly enough to let me have a good with your boats... didn't get one caught to any netting this year, a first! Thank you if you gave me the time of day and explained something to me or showed me how your boat works.

Very pleased that everything went OK and you had great weather. Unfortunately Mayhem always seems to overlap with our usual family holiday so I missed it once more.

Just to say a big 'thank you' to the Wicksteed Model Boat Club and to all of the organisers. Yesterday was my first visit to Wicksteed and I had a brilliant day. Fantastic venue, lots of clubs, everyone having fun and happy to chat - well worth the 270 mile round trip from Somerset! Best wishes, Richard

I'm sure I'll recover from the weekend soon... Firstly a massive thank you to Nick for organising the thing - and letting Pete, Phil and myself pretend that we were being helpful in running it ;) Thanks to Martin, Ruth and Gina for everything they do Thanks to the Wicksteed club for letting us make a mess of their lake Most importantly, thanks to everyone who turned up. It's hard to believe just how enormous this thing is getting now, at 10:30am on Saturday I counted 140 modellers lakeside, by lunchtime it was impossible to count how many people there were. Here's to next year :-))

Agreed! Andy & Poppy were their ever exuberant selves, a real joy to be around. :-)) ( Andy was our 'range safety officer..... and prmptly gave a very good example of 'how NOT to run a superfast electric boat in crowded waters!' )

I'm very pleased that your run of rubbish weather days continues! Looks like lots of fun was had messing around with boats and ships and all sorts of exciting water craft. I had intended to be there but finances and vehicle poorliness caused a decision to cancel.
I look forward to joining you next year!

For those who missed it, I’d made a truly terrible trophy for the winner of our straight running competition. Unfortunately the person who maintained Phil’s losing streak was my fiancé Poppy, so it’s now back in my house again…

Wow what a great weekend!
I’ve just managed to recover from all the fun and everything is back into its storage for next time.
I’d like to thank the Mayhem Organisation Committee (Martin, Klunk, Phil and Andy) for all their help in making this the best Mayhem ever! After last year we decided to make the event more ‘organised’ but retain the standard format of free sailing. I believe we achieved this and will be planning very soon for next year which will involve a special anniversary event. Watch this space :-))
This year many would have noticed that we had a new entrance and organised car parking system which was unfortunately implemented at the last minute so we didn’t have time to update the park map for everyone- we will endeavour to make sure it’s updated in time for next year. I want to thank the entire rota of Wicksteed Park Club for brilliantly providing the control and support for the car parking. They did a stunning job considering we have never done this before. I would also like to thank Wicksteed Park for their support with the car park set up and security team as back up.
Great to see Mrs Mayhem and Little Miss Mayhem, LMM looked really chuffed with her hovercraft from Jag! Many thanks to both the Wicksteed Ladies, Bill, Ruth, and Gina for the wonderful refreshment support.
It was fantastic to see such a variety of models on the water showing the amazing range of types in our hobby, everything from scale, yachts, straight runners, to I/C and hovercraft. The amount of new faces young and old was incredible and hopefully keeps our hobby growing.
This year we had three traders and I’d like to thank them all for their continued support- Deans Marine, Flag Man, and Palaform. We also had the support of the RNLI for a second year so a thank to Baloo and his fellow lifeboaters for displaying their models and highlighting the importance of the RNLI.
AndyN was a great example of bringing new ideas to the event and the ‘merch’ was a great success, my jumper was certainly very well made and looked the part.
Klunk aka Pete Carmen had a nice touch this year with the signing in book, I hope you all had a chance to sign it, not only is it a nice touch but gives a great record of our show.
And finally, a big thank you to all who visited, sailed, and displayed, without you we wouldn’t have a show. See you all soon and here is to Mayhem at Wicksteed 2024 :-))

I agree with Nick. Andy did a great job with the merch (I suspect Poppy had a hand in there) and advertising. A massive personal thankyou to all wiki members who helped out in the carpark and tea tent.

I was so glad to be back at Mayhem after a long absence, and what a Mayhem! My sincerest congratulations to all those involved in organising and running this fabulous event.
My little Victorian navy has not gone to sea for some time, and it was a great pleasure to sail them again in such illustrious company. Thanks to you all!
