Title: Stuart D10 Servo operated Reversing Mechanism
Post by: DBS88 on July 12, 2022, 05:48:38 pm
Hi I have been working on a friends boat, he has lost sensation in his fingers so is no longer able to work on his steam boats. He has a lovely river cruiser fitted with a big boiler and Stuart D10. He wanted to add a reversing mechanism, Stephenson link, so he asked me to reinstall the engine and set up the servo control for it. Its been an interesting exercise from which I have learned a lot. Like all these projects, the help and advice I have received from Mayhem friends has been very valuable, thank you, and its enabled me to complete the installation for him. Its also an opportunity to share the way the installation has been done with fellow Mayhemers. The installation involved removing the Stuart reversing lever and replacing it with a new lever suitable for connection to a servo. Here are the photos and a link to a video of it running under steam, both forwards and backwards. link to Video  https://youtu.be/sp6Ip_0yAqc (https://youtu.be/sp6Ip_0yAqc)

Bonjour Dave,
Well done  :-))
On mines, I also did like you and furthermore have several other solutions, examples :

Thank you for your positive feedback re this project. The boat is currently back with its owner, hopefully he will be sailing it in the near future, when I have photos of it cruising down the lake I will share them with you, I am excited by the prospect of seeing it on the water

Works great, well done!
Did you make the brass lever or is it a commercial item?

Re the lever, whilst a long time ago I trained as an engineer and became the equivalent of a toolmaker, I no longer have access to the machine tools, so a friend very kindly offered to make the item for me, and a very nice job they made of it. So much better than using the earth pin from a 3 pin UK plug!

nice job of hiding the servo over on the side.

Unfortunately my friend didn’t get round to sailing the river cruiser with this engine in it, so no photos of it on the water. Sadly he has now passed away so the River Cruiser will be up for sale on the Forum probably from Sunday, it’s 51 inches long and 11 inches wide.
