Title: Zwarte Zee 592 Build
Post by: Phil22 on September 03, 2022, 01:00:27 pm
Hi MBM,

A second project arrived last week, a Billing Boats Zwarte Zee (Black Sea) BB592. I've added some info about the kit in 'what's in the box?'

https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,68612.0.html (https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,68612.0.html)

Making our Banckert was a great learning experience and having looked around at models from other brands, I circled back to Billing's as there's familiarity with what to expect. Another ABS hull was a must, living in an apartment block with sensitive neighbours, the hammering required for trying a POF hull wouldn't go down well. That's one thing to look forward to doing down the line when I eventually have a shed, and a garden for that matter. =)

For the walk to the local lake, I originally wanted something similar in size or smaller than the Banckert (65cm) but the lines of the ZZ gripped me. It's a magnificent looking shape.

This time around I'm taking care to keep the laser cut ply in a more intact state. If any replacement parts are needed they should act as good templates. All ply sheets have been photocopied for backup.

Made a start too on getting some of the electronics together.

Again, I'll document the building process and will appreciate any input and guidance along the way.

Thanks for looking.
Phil

Hi Phil

Looking forward to the build. Always remember the Zwarte Zee as Plank on frame. Nice to see they have updated the kit :-)) :-))

Hi MBM,

Another ABS hull was a must, living in an apartment block with sensitive neighbours, the hammering required for trying a POF hull wouldn't go down well. That's one thing to look forward to doing down the line when I eventually have a shed, and a garden for that matter. =)
Unless you are building to a rather large scale there is very little hammering needed for plank on frame. In most cases the sizes of wood used allows any pins to be pushed in without the need of a hammer. I generally don't use the provided brass pins just using glue and normal sewing pins to fit the planks, if you can use clamps then they can be better as they don't leave holes in the wood.

Thanks all =)

I appreciate your input Jim. With your advice a POF hull would be doable for me at home. I'll have to look into it more for the future, the range of build options will definitely open up. Nice one!

Regarding the hull's trim line, I find this line shown by the masking tape to be of much interest due to both 'the plunge' and the fact that it isn't parallel with the keel. Referencing the manual and other threads online, the line sets the height for the rear deck.

The approach in mind is to get the bulkheads fixed in first, (the stern bulkhead looks to be 3mm below the trim line). Temp fit the rear deck then carefully plane and sand the sides down to level. Before I can do this though, I'll need to order a propshaft and measure that up for fitment.

Stern area: Plastic molded bulkwarks are provided and wrap around sides in 1mm ply.

Interested to learn some more about electronics, I picked up a breadboard and some components:

Hi MBM,

The past few evenings have been spent removing the laser cut parts from the ply sheets and studying the manual. Like with the Banckert, the instructions are workable but updated versions from Billings would be welcomed, wink-wink. I'm sure things will become clearer when the items needed for each step are in hand and have had some thought.

Hi All,

Things are progressing at a gentle pace :D
Here’s what has been done in the last week.

This 3D puzzle makes up the towing winch. Found that the 2 brass 'drumheads' are missing from the kit so I've requested them from Billings.

I replaced the kit parts to be doubled up with solid wooden blocks.
I've since decided I'm going to do them again with a wider, flatter profile. A little beefier looking, something you could whack your shins on.

For all plastic and brass fittings, where possible they'll get painted separately later on.

4 days on and while waiting for some parts, I thought I'd work on the rear deck structure.
Momentary grumble incoming... it might not look much from the pics but the laser-cut uprights were a mess, width and height!!

I'm thankful not to be cutting parts out by hand, but considering the model's price I'd expect better.
I either got a 'pants' copy of these parts, or I suspect the plot for the laser needs reviewing.
Building to square having shortened the width for the 34s, 35s and the 36, you can still see the vertical misalignment. The Sydney Opera House sprung to mind.

As well as the uprights, parts 39a (left) and 37 (right) needed revision.
For future builders, take a moment to double-check these parts before doing any glueing.

With some work the structure started to come together correctly and my enthusiasm returned hahaha.

Some more shaping, filling, and light sanding are needed in spots throughout, but with my grumble now forgotten, I'm loving having this new project to work on.

Thanks for looking.

Thank you Alan! Photography became a hobby of mine after moving to Tokyo.
There are so many incredible views here, especially in the city at night with all the neon lit up.
My main interests are photographing temples and architecture, and more recently tiny bits of plywood again hahaha.

Here are the results of some more steady progress, starting off with the ship's crane assembly.
I wedged an extra piece of wood into the top of the pipe. This helps things in a few ways, to offer a bigger contact surface and can lessen the event of glue oozing out of the join.

I'm still not 100% sure how this'll marry up to the next level deck, but it's my interpretation of the drawings provided. I'll add a note later on with the result.

This is how the lower cabin took form

[Between the blocks] The left edge of the smaller piece needed a chamfer putting on it which I missed (on both sides).
They should align with the base template. Not a biggie though.

The brass ballast left over from our first build is very handy for this type of work.

I must admit I was apprehensive to see this long piece of veneer when I first opened the kit. When doing the Banckert, I'll admit I never knew the common knowledge about soaking before bending. Cue splitting wood sound effect.

I left the part in water for 2 hours and 'clamped for the best'. The laptop's weight and profile worked great in getting the curve where it needed to be while drying out.

I completely missed part 44a (noticing a pattern??), which is designed to work as a guide when wrapping the veneer across the front.

This time armed with information from the MBM folks here is the result, I'm really chuffed with how it turned out. A light application of wood glue has been added on the inside to the bends.

When gluing, the contact area offered by the L-shape side pieces (non-kit) worked well to quickly grab the veneer.  44a might still get its day as a cover to tidy things up. We'll see after the next deck gets put on if it'll add anything.  In the interests of weight saving though maybe it'll become a 'paint stirrer'.

Hi Phill

Your photography hobby certainly shows. The quality of your pictures is what I wish kit manufacturers would use. A lot of the time you are trying to decipher small fuzzy photos. I should imagine you are not short of beautiful views where you are. Build is coming on grate. Look forward to the next instalment. :-)) :-))

Cheers Alan! Rosie turned out beautifully, really enjoyed following your progress and I’m looking forward to seeing how the CM build goes, especially as it was one of the kits on my shortlist when choosing the ZZ =)

Many thanks to Billing’s for getting the missing winch parts quickly sent out. Good service!

Things are coming along and ZZ’s starting to take shape. All of the internals bar the 2S Lipo are on order, so to keep me occupied until their arrival, I’ve been having a dabble with her lighting setup.

The main mast has an upper diameter of 4mm (wood supplied), I want to install 3 yellow LEDs here but with space being too tight for 6 wires (replacement plastic pipe), I’ve gone for this approach.

Main mast: Testing with a 9V battery a single resistor, so far the 3 yellows (1.8V x 3) and 1 green (2.2V / nav light) all have a good luminosity, not too bright and next to no heat anywhere.

Connected to the bread board, it works well but I’ll need to figure out something that looks OK to hide the protruding ends of the wires once the anodes and cathodes are shortened.

For the ship’s lighting the overall plan is:

(All LEDs 5mm)

Main Mast: 3 x yellow
Navigation: 1 green, 1 red
Second Mast: 1 white
Main winch area: 2 x white
Bridge: 1 white (heavily dimmed)
Cabins: 2~4 white/yellow (undecided)

Stuck point: For the remaining LEDs, it is worth still going with a couple more 9V batteries on separate circuits or not? I’m sure there’s a more straight-forward / better way of going about this… still very much a noob when it comes to the practical side of electronics. Any suggestions from your experience would be great.

This was my first go at attaching what I think is the wave deflector (correct term welcome).

We left it off the Banckert as we preferred the look without it. For the ZZ, I wanted to have a go. It is a challenge to bond edges on the angle with no additional supports. After a soak, and starting from the centre, I alternated between spots of superglue for the initial tack, and quick drying wood glue for the hold.

I’m fairly content with how it turned out. It’s going to need some filler in areas to even things out more. Any tips or advice will be gratefully accepted, as there’s another set to do on the bridge.

The housings for the navigation lights were remade slightly larger. I’m sure there’s going to be variances between builds in terms of these curves, so the kit ones do act as good templates to start from.

Here is the bridge going together.

Looking online at past versions of the ZZ at a bigger scale, I really like the look of the 7 rectangular bridge windows. The 1:90 kit has them square and spaced too wide I feel, so I’ve made a plasticard version with 6 windows that I think emulates things better at this scale.

Nothing is stuck together at this stage, some structures need some filling here and there before I get going with the primer.

Hi Phil

Build coming on really well. Curved timber is always a problem, but it has come out fine. I am no expert on electrics, but I am sure you will get some guidance here. Stan has helped me a lot with electrics in the past.

Looking forward to the build and more of your excellent Photo's. :-)) :-))

For the mast lighting you should look for thinner wires. If you can find any the wires from BT telephone cable are ideal although they are less flexible as they are generally single strand. If you can get hold of an old transformer the varnished wires in the primary coil are ideal, again single strand so are really thin, in the past I have used some that is around 0.15mm diameter. The LEDs don't take much current so you can use really thin wire without problems. If you check out EBay you should be able to find thinner wire than you are using.

Hi
For LED's I use 0.2mm cable, for multi number of LED's of the same colour I wire them up in parallel.

@Alan, yes Stan's experience is worth its weight in gold. I'll be fiber-glassing the bow of the ZZ, as he recommended I did with the Banckert.

@JimG, @Fred Ellis many thanks for your information and advice. I bought some 0.26 gauge wire this weekend from a local stockist, and could achieve the mast setup as I originally wanted  ;)

Installation gave a few laughs as the wire emerged out of the wrong end  {-)

I was going to wait on trimming the hull but curiosity won so I made a start. I went around several times scoring about 5mm above the trim line, until the excess could be removed, then continued with a mini plane. It's almost there, the ABS too is quite sturdy.

The plunging rear deck line is much less concerning now as it first appeared.

A test fit shows some adjustment is needed at the stern. The deck will almost get into the required spot but a noticeable kink forms. Over sanding, I might opt for a saw cut along the length to remove some material. This should help narrow the piece, I'll try with some cardboard first and check.

Hi Phil

Only see one problem is sealing the aft deck from water.

I am having problems with my Smit tug which I bought second hand.

Some foam/rubber seal set up before installing the deck ???

Hi All,

For the masts, building the railings for each platform without stanchions was a challenge, the heat from soldering (which I’m not the best at) would cause my previous joins to come apart. Both are a bit skew-whiff in spots but I can live with how they turned out overall. If I were to do them again, I think I’d try to make my own stanchions with holes for the rails.

For the main mast I constructed it a little differently. I opted to build the base section square instead of tapered as in the instructions. The kit parts are naturally all cut at right angles, so when it came to the tapering, gaps were appearing. Sanding/filling to fit is an option true, but it went together a whole lot more easily with some straight 5mm section for the front and rear uprights. The front has been finished with some 10mm beading. The sides will get a few additions to bulk them out more at the base.

Brass housings have arrived for 5mm LEDs to be added later.

I’m starting to get the hang of bending veneer haha.

Light filling and sanding is finished so the majority of the parts can now be primed.

I wasn’t expecting solid results with these details. Being required to drill 3mm holes into 5mm ply on the cross section is a bit daft. They chewed up then began to fall apart. I’ll use plasticard or balsa instead.

It wasn’t until it arrived that I realized I’d ordered a shaft that’s threaded at both ends. This doesn’t work with the solid coupling which I definitely want to use this time around. I’m now on the lookout for a plain ended version.

The sides of the hull have been sanded down further. 80 grit sandpaper is your friend when working with ABS, get the gloss sheen off and down to a ‘furry matte’ to get a good bond.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Alan,
Many thanks for your kind comment. LOL I realized that for me, the tiny stuff requiring patience is the thing I like doing the most. That is bar soldering (grins).
Working to set the deck levels at the moment.

I’m interested if any builders of this kit also had to remove material to get the laser-cut deck to fit inside the hull. In the instructions I can make out that the rear bulkhead sits down about 3mm so when fitted, the deck sits flush with the ABS sides. Perhaps other folks have the deck sitting on the ABS, not sure. Wherever works though I guess.

The rear deck spans the middle bulkhead which needed a few mm taking off it too. It fits well now, but I need to address the hatch opening to square it off again.

When assembling the main winch, I left the wall separate until I knew how these parts went together. Looks like I got it right with the instructions. The winch butts up flush with the deck.

Main deck test fitting next.

Cheers.

Nice one for the comment Adam. I'm not sure yet what colour scheme I'm going with but it won't be the deck colour on the box. I've seen one build online with an orange and red hull, it sounds wild but it was done well.

Fitting the main deck took some thought and patience over a few days. In my case, it was necessary to remove 10~12mm off the top of the forward bulkhead, the deck is now in place and without having had any cuts made nor sanding.

Doing the portholes was an interesting and rewarding task. A few different arrangements were tried on strips of A3, these worked to give a good visual on the model, and to check if any of the holes would hit the main deck's mounting points.

I'm sure there was a structural reason for their location on the real vessel but I find them a bit too random looking towards the bow. In design terms, my eyes are hunting for symmetry and a landing spot that isn't there (this harks back to my former days as a signmaker). I reworked their grouping into 3 pairs then the remainder together with slightly wider spacing. There are now 24 per side, 1 less than the original.

The supplied portholes are 6mm ø requiring a 5mm hole. The template was gone along putting a pin through each of the centres so they could be marked on the hull.

It could then be flipped and the other side marked up.

I really wanted to get the holes lined up as well as I could, so I used several bits starting at 0.5mm and incrementally worked up to 4mm which was the largest I had. I made a quick dart to the DIY shop and got a small set with a 5mm in. Back home this is where things nearly went pair-shaped. Until this stage I'd been carefully going up in less than 1mm increments to widen each hole. Yeah, it did take time lolol.

Going direct from the 4mm to a 5 just tore through the ABS without the bit spinning. The hole it left looked more like a triangle :(    My fault I should've tested it first on an offcut. I filed it back to circular then thought I'd try to recover things with the 4~12mm step-bit from the new kit. I'd not used one before ... it worked well to rescue my mistake and did a very pleasing job of the other 47. Lesson learnt =P

Lucky charm!

When drilling initially I noticed a "rogue" out of line and sitting lower than the rest. I purposely stopped working on this one until those either side of it were finished. I could then remeasure, file the hole upwards then carry on the widening process. It's now back in line!

Hello Phil,

That's looking rather good.

You're right to check porthole spacing -what's right on the real thing might not line-up with what's inside (been there many a time).  Nobody will notice the difference in the end anyway.

By the way as you're into building now -for future builds you might want to consider a couple of tapered reamers in your tool kit?  Mine cost a few £££ each but they last donkeys years, once you drill the pilot hole they are very accurate for enlarging out in wood, thin steel, brass, ali, plastic, GRP etc.

I have a couple from HALL amongst others but very sure you can find similar in Japan.  My HALL stuff seems the best, one is something like 3-12mm (same as in link below), the other 12 to something like 25mm.  They are nice to hold in the hand and you can "direct" the hole by applying gentle pressure one direction or the other...

https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/hand-reamer-bits/0600672(for very mall holes -"bead reamers" are handy to have also)

All the best,

Rich

Hi Rich @RST much obliged for your thoughtful advice and the link to the reamer. I'll be sure to have a look around and see what's available in Tokyo.

Kind of related like going to a foreign supermarket on holiday, it's interesting to compare the items sold in DIY shops here versus the likes of B&Q, etc back home. The range of pull saws aimed at pros is extensive, but I don't often see tenant saws. Hand-drills are another, I've only ever seen one in a dozen places. My running conclusion is that the average household doesn't have or need many tools. From what I understand from friends, woodwork and metalwork are not subjects taught in Japanese schools, so many folk are very limited in their practical knowledge of DIY. A common one is wallpapering, this is almost exclusively done by professional decorators here. This is a shame really as I do believe that many people want to have a go at things themselves. On the other hand, trained Japanese carpenters are extraordinary at their craft as can be seen in this documentary on temple construction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BQ5uRor72E (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BQ5uRor72E)

Next is working to get the electrics in and positioned. The Banckert has a 750kv motor installed and I'm more than happy with the speed and handling performance. When pushing it on the rare occasion, it does reach a point where the increased revs don't affect the speed. This should be expected I guess. At 25cm longer and likely to be heavier when ballasted, I want to have some more performance on tap for the ZZ so have gone for a 930kv.

I could rework this motor mount, a mistaken purchase from my first build.

It's already looking close to being at the right height for the propshaft to exit the hull. Sadly the grub screws in the coupling chewed up without much force applied at all. The piece is a 'gonna' so an alternative has been ordered.

(stern bulkhead still to go in)

At the prop end, these 3 sections have been epoxied together.

It might be a good heads up for future builders to think about a prop's length if the kit one isn't used. For me it's a close fit but some material could be taken away from the upright.

Following Stan's advice again, the bow has been reinforced with fiberglass.

Yep Alan, I’m thinking it’ll have a ‘bit of go’ in reserve if the need ever crops up!
 {-)

A few odds and ends were worked on this week while waiting for a parts delivery from CMB. As usual, they provided their superb, efficient, and reliable service.

These little chaps were salvaged with some plasticard instead of the portholes being set into the ply directly.

Some priming work has been done on the rear deck details.

Touched upon previously, another item I'm finding that has limited options in Tokyo is wood undercoat. The one I bought is leaving the surface bitty feeling and gummy bubbles are forming so I’ll continue looking for another brand.

The vac-formed funnel got trimmed to fit. This was done carefully with a combination of nail scissors, fine sandpaper and a jewelers file. Going all the way to the line wasn’t required here.

A minor forward lean on the rear mast needed correcting, it now has a slight rake to better match the main mast. The supports have been roughly measured in a slightly larger diameter dowel (non-kit).

Another layer of fiberglass was applied inside the bow, and the rear hatch got squared back up following cuts made to the deck. This turned out better than expected.

This is the new 4mm~5mm coupling by Logic RC.

With the height of the motor in the mount, the propshaft is more or less going to be parallel with the keel. Is there anything to be mindful of in such cases? Is it better to have a slight downward angle from the motor end or is parallel OK?

Thanks in advance for any advice received.

Hi All,

Back to the build after returning from our honeymoon. This week I've been working on fitting the electronics. The parts and layout are going to be more or less the same as in our Banckert.

I swapped the speed controller's Tamiya connector for an XT60.

Wood has been expoxied and screwed to motor mount's base. I'm planning to use woodglue to attach its centre to the keel batton, and expoxy the sides where it contacts the ABS.

I'll post about this next time but for the prop I bought, the depth was too much to work with the kit's design. I'll put it down to my experience level but some parts ended up getting modified so test assembly could happen.

Have a great weekend!

Thanks a lot Phil!

Primer coat for the details. Unless we get some warmer spells in Tokyo, painting will likely have to wait now until the spring.

Here's what I touched upon in my last post about the prop fitting. I've probably not tackled this well, my aftermarket prop wouldn't fit the kit part. I thought about removing the outlined section but didn't think I could get a good finish.

I went ahead and cut the section out completely and added half of it back in. With 2 saw cuts difference, the piece removed became too narrow for the epoxy to grab well enough. My join wasn't good enough here.

I took the whole upright out. The part is fairly robust so I don't think there's the need to reinforce it anywhere.

The kitchen cupboards were a perfect support while the epoxy started to cure.

The current puzzle is how to get the rudder in. The only way I can think of so far is to put the rudder tube and stock in last from inside the hull.

A first go in the bath to get an idea of ballast. I recall it was about 3.8kgs (8.4lbs) to get it to the waterline.

I made the hole for the propshaft in the bulkhead oval, this made things easier to set the propshaft in position. This point really fought me too much on the Banckert so I gave it more thought this time haha. Pieces of wood front and rear close the oval and help support the propshaft.

Some new brass pieces for ballast.

Hello!
Really enjoy your build logs, I follow with great interest.
As for the propeller, you could get away with grinding the hub down a bit. I don't think the real propeller would have that "cone" anyway, but perhaps you don't want to do alterations to it. I did just that on one of my boats when the prop wouldn't fit  behind the rudder.
Anyway, great build!

Hi Hama,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and for the photo upload to demonstrate. It's a cool looking idea to take a section out of the rudder. I'll have to remember this. The ZZ has a straight post right down (see below) so I think I'll have to go with things the way they are now. As you suggested, I did think that maybe I could take some off the cone. A few things made me think twice like, how thick is the brass? Would I make an unwanted hole? How would the finish look afterwards?
 {-)
Anyhow I appreciate your helpful reply.

Progress is steady at the moment. An epoxy pour has been done to dam up the exit for the propshaft.

This was a test fit of the internal batons to add further strength to the bulkheads. With me making a cut in the length of the deck, they're probably in a different place to where they should be. The removable deck still sits flush so no worries.

I've not glued them in yet as I want access to underside of the deck still. Nod to Harry (canabus) on his advice about sealing the deck well enough.

(brass block addresses a kink in the ply, caused by my mod to fit it)

The tiller (correct terminology welcome) is a super tight fit under the deck, there's less than 2mm clearance. I've seen some builds that have the servo arm above deck as one way to tackle this, creatively semi-masked inside the deck structures. I've tested things out by placing the servo quite close to the tiller and everything looks good. I'll post about this next, I'll pickup some linkages this weekend.

Battery box now taken off the list.

Hi All,

Here's another update from the past few days building.
Up till now I've been working with the long cabin bolted to the deck. This has really helped a lot to keep the deck straight, especially when taking measurements and test fitting.

After looking online at other builds of the ZZ for ideas, I decided I wanted to get the servo close to the tiller and keep the linkages short. The epoxy dam was angled when drying and this was a lucky move, the space left was ideal for how the servo housing ended up taking shape.

Using this template the servo is housed above the epoxy.

There’s ample clearance under the deck.

Linkages fitted.

Made and epoxied in a simple rudder stock.

The kit's rudder is made of 3 pieces. I decided to make it slightly thicker and use 4. This has helped to set the post in snug without making adjustments to the outer pieces on their in-facing sides.

I've drilled 2 holes for pinning. I've since picked up some shorter brass screws so I'll see which might work best with some epoxy.

The motor mount is now in too.

Another ballast check.

The hull already has a section of brass inside the dam and 2 pieces by the motor. In addition to the motor, mount, propshaft, servo, and 2S Lipo she needed another 2.8kgs (6.2lbs).

Thanks for reading.
Cheers!!

Hi Alan,

Thanks as always for your encouragement, glad you're enjoying to follow the progress : )

I'll be honest, the ZZ definitely is a different beast entirely to the Banckert. Both are listed in 'The Experienced' section of Billing's website but I think of the two, I'm leaning toward a preference for the 1:50 scale. The Banckert's vac-formed hull and deck made things more straightforward to construct. In my opinion, there's a lot more thinking ahead, build order management and imagination required when the putting the ZZ together. I think I'm at a point where most of the 'heavy lifting' has been done, and it's going to be largely detailing now which is what I like doing the best.

Portholes have all gone in

I was initially thinking to sand them flush inboard then apply a single watertight strip, excess feathering of the portholes changed my plan. Each got a plasticard backing that was then encased in epoxy.

I recommend to keep the bulwarks separated into their own piles, even better colour-coding them would be my advice. The A's and B's are easily mixed up. I had separated them out and still managed to install a B where an A needed to go.

The rear ones were purposely left off so the deck could be clamped for permanent fixing.

The seam was filled in all around and a bead of silicon applied to the underside.

The pinning of the rudder looks to have worked well. I did end up filing some material off the cone. The previous concerns for its reshaping were OK.

The ABS hull needs a lot of support to bring the sides in to square. Piece 7 (orange arrow) was first bonded to the hull without any clamping. Piece 10 (blue arrow) is supposed to sit on top of it. I thought that the angle is going to change after bringing in the sides so I selected to stick the 10s on the deck's underside.

The central wall with some additional supports holds everything in place strong.

Hi MBM

Happy New Year and all the best for 2023!

The ZZ build has a recruited a special guest, my Dad :)
My parents have come over to Tokyo for the holidays and Dad has been interested to get involved. It's been great to pick up new things from him and get his ideas and opinions. While not a modeller, he does have a background in carpentry (cabinet making) and is a DIY whiz. Not everything has been logged as before as we've enjoyed a few drinks together while working away. I've captured what has been going on when I've remembered.

Wrapping the sides around the stern took some time. I'm not so sure that my minor mod to the deck caused the fitment to be this off. After some thought I decided to create my own pieces using ABS.

Inner and outer pieces (4 in total) were made so that the thickness matched up flush with the side of the hull.

These points are solid for getting a good fixing.

Wrapping the last piece of veneer there was a sizeable gap to sort out. This was first tackled with some squares of plasticard between bulwarks. Later a layer of filler was applied

The initial idea was to first fit the main deck which has a winch area that locates under the forward deck. There was a lot of resistance from the hull wanting to push both decks up. This can be seen in the bath shots earlier.

So the forward deck went on first. The winch walls were removed and salvaged from the main deck, made lower then reaffixed.

This then allowed the winch area to go in smoothly.

A 3mm bead was added and sanded to match the level of the forward deck. This smartens up the join.

The davits were a fun detail to work on. The instructions aren't really that clear so we came up with this design. Their base posts only will be attached to the main deck, so the davits themselves will lift off with the upper deck.

Thanks so much Phil! Appreciate the kind words!

It has been such a brilliant time working on the boat with my Dad these past 5 weeks. We've had a load of laughs and in the end got to the lake for her first trial. I've posted a video link below. Here is what's been going on.

Getting some coats of paint on to help seal everything a little. A coat of urethane would've been ideal too but the lettering hasn't gone on yet. LOL the sheet I had in my stock only contains 3 letter z's, I need 6.

Masking off for the red.

This took several attempts to get the back looking right as not to have the line bowing up or down at eye level.

I managed to 'tint' the grey balcony floor pink with overspray!!! This came off with a couple of goes with thinner, thankfully!!! “Nothing to see here landlord!”

The hull will stay like this now. The additional colours up on the bow of yellow and blue I've decided to leave off. I prefer the look of the 2 tone.

The forward deck was masked so that the black line continues up and around from the hand rails

Ballast check with the hull painted. Only going off past experience with the Banckert some weight was left out of the bow to see if the model would hunker down under acceleration. After testing we found it didn't but the opposite. A chunk of ballast was removed from the stern, the bow lowered a touch and the result looked great in the water when cruising.

Here's where Dad taught me some new stuff. Soaking a cloth in water then applying the iron with some steam made the wood become super pliable in seconds.

The forward set of rails have an inward arc then an outward twist. The back of our chair made for a perfect template, these were left overnight in this position.

For the midship rails.

Any bends that are too much can be softened again after another go with the soaked cloth and the iron.

The hand rails could all be completed over 2 evenings.

All of the decks are still not fixed. Dad added locators to each level to save on measuring up each time.

When fitting the rear mast, we had to remove this inner section so a sprig could locate as well as let the wiring come through. The wall got drilled which then made for its easy removal with a craft knife. This one was Dad's too.

I'll add a bit on the sailing experience.

As a newbie and only having ever 'piloted' our Banckert which is very agile I'd say, at first the ZZ's handling came as a massive surprise. The longer and heavier hull makes operating her a process that needs more thought and attention. The rudder is small and the turning circle is about 12ft if I recall right. At one stage Dad and I thought her rudder had stopped working as there was little to no response at low speed. We got her back in with only forward and reverse and then tested the rudder servo from distance, all was fine, no issues with reception at all. Back in the water we learned that the model needs thrust for the rudder to work at lower speeds, it doesn't really steer without some use of the prop. This began to make total real-world sense especially due to the weight and retained momentum from after the motor is disengaged. I can now appreciate why folks install bow-thrusters. After we got over the nervousness, we really began to enjoy the new sailing experience. Dad got a go of the Banckert when he arrived, so he too had a benchmark ; )

This link is hosted on Vimeo showing our first trial. Dad's doing the sailing =)

Nice one Alan! Thanks for your support.

A few various things for this installment, some structural, some detail related but needs doing before another round of priming.

These plastic guides work to bring the wrapped veneer into the required spot. They'll be used as a fixing point later on. Some bulk was added to the sides of the mast to make it approximately the same as the original kit parts. The walls were also remade to close off the angled gap seen here.

Mounting points were made for the navigation lights. The unused stern veneer got recycled for these.

The 3mm LEDs wouldn't go into the brass housings fully. Carefully filing some plastic away from their bases allowed for a complete fit.

Locator for the mast. This should create a solid joint when glued. It'll be good to prevent any movement as there's going to be some mild tension pulling from different directions when the elastic for the rigging gets fitted.

The rigging points are I think up to the builder. The box image shows the general locations but instruction is light.

This gives an idea of the look and so far none of the lines are fouling anywhere. The final installation won't have the 2 centre eye-hooks connected as they are here.

Happy 70th Mum xxxxx

There's a little more to go on on both masts but they're almost complete.

This removable piece of plasticard will be used to either template the wooden deck or I'll affix the veneer directly to it. I'll work that out at the time.

On the rear mast platform, there are 2 brackets for securing the 'booms' (correct terminology welcome). The molding here is pretty poor looking so they've been removed and I've gone at it with free licence.

To look something like this when in place.

On to working on the railings. In my opinion the stanchions found in the Banckert kit are far better, I'm not a fan on the ones supplied with the zz, many are slightly bent, I assume from the hole punching process.

As the gauge is thin at 0.7mm, I thought I'd test to see if I could accurately bend all three rails at once having soldered both ends. I've not tested the result in the stanchions yet but so far they seem to have turned out OK.

Lastly, I'm trying out ideas for linking the tops of both masts, 4 lines connect both. I want something fairly durable to help in the event of any accidental knocks. This is still a work in progress for the moment.

Hi All,

Here’s how the mast to mast rigging turned out. Each piece has received a thin coat of epoxy to bind everything together and stop any movement. The pen lines give an idea of the finished look.

This week has been ‘railings week’. The set for the bridge took 3 tries. With the first attempt I tried to follow the plans and get the exact shape using my 3 rails soldered together then shaped. The results were OK but from some angles I hadn’t gotten some stanchions vertical.

Next, I tried bending a single set of railings to follow the plans but I still wasn’t content with the results =P

This gave me the idea to simplify things.

Seeing me solder recently, Dad advised me to use more flux and more heat, this tip has helped so much as less solder is needed to get a good join, in turn it has stopped me getting the usual unwanted blobs.

Transferring the new locator points and filling the existing laser-cut holes.

While out buying elastic for the rigging last weekend, I wandered through the jewellery supplies area of Yuzawaya a great arts and crafts shop in Tokyo. I was after some small black beads with pre-molded holes to join rigging lines in parts. I found those, plus a load of other useful looking bits.

A small point of caution for future builders about the railings. The deck has 2 extra holes drilled in the ply that look to be an error unless Billings are giving the option on which side to put the pilot boat. Anyhow with the plans as they are, the left most 2 would cause the davits not to fit on the port side.

continued...

I’ve been using pliers to push the stanchions into 0.5mm pre drilled holes, and using extra ones to hold the rails in place before the actual ends have been soldered.

Finishing up the booms (??) midship. The instructions here don’t help and there are very few shots online of this spot. I wanted to work out how they might realistically operate, so made a mock up that can be raised and lowered with some limited lateral movement.

Doing justice to a classic design. Looks like it's doing 30knts even standing still.

Thanks very much Ian @Circlip, Alan @Alan52.

Railings 'Part 2' this week with another installment of the same next time. I've actually grown to like their design more than I did, maybe it's because they're 'cooperating' with me during assembly.
 {-)

Some Tamiya putty has been applied where the railings go into the ply. This still needs sanding but does a good job of sealing everything.

The forward deck got done over a couple of nights. The very front is likely to get remade if I have enough material left over. The gaps in relation to the next sets of railings either side can be improved.

Would anyone be able to tell me what this is and its function? I'd guess still something for ropes.

All the cutting, shaping, and soldering for the railings is now complete. Additional to the brass wire gauges provided in the kit, I went through almost 40 more 0.7mm x 300mm lengths. I made some mistakes along the way but my advice is to have plenty handy for the 100+ stanchions.

For the railings midship, the kit looks to have the stanchions set into a strip of beading. From the drawings it's hard to make out for certain, the wood I used here is none-kit.

As not to have the railings step down where they return, I've added material there to become like low platforms either side.

The starboard rails are lower for the pilot boat. I made the access gap wider than in the plans.

This section is the deck above the main towing gear. Railings here were extended onto the main deck.

Staggering the wire helps so much when threading stanchions.

Nothing is fixed yet and the handrails need shortening going down to the lower deck. I'm happy with how things have turned out.

Remade the bow set to get a better fit.

This has been the shape I've been following throughout.

The weather is getting milder here in Tokyo so painting can get going soon.

Phil

Hi All,

Things are continuing to move along on the zz. The railings are now all done, this was a very rewarding job. Being made to fit in with my design, my set overall is a loose match with the plans provided.

Nothing yet is permanently secured so that the painting of components can be done separately.

The pre-drilled holes for the railings around the prop make for a tight fit. These got a rework to give more space.

A first coat of primer went on. For railings, has anyone got any advice to stop or help prevent the build up of fine strands when spray painting? Each piece is going to need attention to clean things up before the next coat is applied.

On to the decking around the bridge. This was done over a couple of days.

The fitting of the lights too got well underway. Both sets on the masts are working, next is to fit the brass housings and seal the wires.

This week I've been working on the parts of the build that need completing before the superstructure can finally get primed again for paint. This included some more prototyping and testing of the lighting

and the decking for the top bridge. The beading was glued to a piece of plasticard but I found though still somewhat flexible, its shape couldn't be located on the model, so it was cut in two.

A single piece of bead works as a cover. Thinking back, being less susceptible to damage, I should've used a square-ended piece for this task.

The dividing walls either side of the mast were reproduced in 2mm plasticard. This needed doing as I'd made my mast vertical at the base over the kit's tapered one.

I'm pleased with how the fit came together for these parts.

The visor/sun-shield (??) got modified too, mine is half the width of the kit's which I prefer the look of. As there are no mounting points or brackets in the kit, I first superglued the 3 parts in place, then packed the undersides with lengths of 1mm Tamiya section for more surface contact.

This wonderful resource popped up in Google search:

https://www.scheepspraat.nl/zwartezee1963.htm (https://www.scheepspraat.nl/zwartezee1963.htm)

It shows some of the construction of the Zwarte Zee, her crew, and information on various working voyages. For those interested and to view in English, Chrome's translate to English option (right-click menu) can be used.

Hi Phil

Looking forward to the build. Always remember the Zwarte Zee as Plank on frame. Nice to see they have updated the kit :-)) :-))

I, too, was put off by the plank on frame kit earlier.
I love the fine shape of ZZ  O0

I have missed this thread - Is this going to be static, or should the thread go under "Working vessels"?

Thanks for stopping by Hande. It's been great catching up on your SMIT build since I discovered that, the precision and detail levels are outstanding!!

My ZZ will be a working vessel, I wasn't sure where to start this diary, 'Tugs and Towing' seemed like a good place. @Martin if this is better catogorised in 'Working Vessels', please feel free to adjust.

A couple of odds and ends have been the focus for the past few days. In anticipation of the return of the 'Shipyard GM' (my Dad), I've been keeping the pace up so we can definitely be sailing her in April.
 ;D

The trim has been completed between the deck levels.

I decided to extend the decking above the bridge to help balance the look colour-wise. Doing the decking is a fun job and again here, the wood is stuck to a piece of plasticard.

This is what I ended up with.

Steps and handrails. The second pic shows the strands that I'm getting when spraying railings. This all needs cleaning up.

Over the blank kit parts for the propeller mount, I had these random bits that look more industrial.

Fitting the crane.

Last, I added a 1x1mm bead around the base of bridge to mask the slight gap where it sits in the decking. Honestly speaking a lot of the work of late has been done with a pinset, while I love the ZZ as a ship, I can't say the 1:90 scale physically suits my hand size. If something is say 0.5mm out (or even less sometimes), it can standout as being misalinged or a poor fit. This is from personal experience but if there is ever space for a third boat, I'll look to a 1:50 or similar again.

Finishing up on the mast detailing. Each ledge was connected using a small splint to take the weight of the brass fittings. The brackets beneath could be added easily afterwards.

The superstructure got primed again.

It wasn't until some time after I'd painted the hull that I noticed several marks left by the masking tape. They are only visible really when they catch the light but I couldn't let them pass knowing they were there.

The wooden handrails were fitted and primed.

Masking up again to redo the black topcoat. This is the first time using tape with the attached plastic wrap. It was pretty good sat on a layer of 3mm painter's tape.

There is quite a lot of weight on deck from the brass fittings.

Thanks so much Hama for the kind words. It’s much appreciated.

Since the last update there has literally been several masking and painting marathons. Carefully masking the hull to receive the different colours took a good few hours of patience, but I'm happy to report it was successful in the main. A few tweaks and touch-ups have worked out to correct a couple of minor mistakes.

Here is a selection of parts that either required a first or second coat of primer, or were ready for a topcoat.

I left the edging proud to have a white rim around the green deck. It largely came out ok but in a couple of places the green crept in. This was sanded off and I found this excellent 1.5mm channel to use as coping.

I've never seen any colour matching service for paint in Tokyo like we have in the UK. The range of spray paint is quite limited I've found. This first attempt painting the rear structures with Tamiya Color's 'Dull Red', had them coming out a very distracting brick red. The second go was Tamiya Color's 'Red Brown', which was a 'No' straight away. Trying to find something available that would work with the green deck, I finally decided on Mr. Color Spray's ‘Navy Blue’, which looks more like a military grey.

[/size]How do you clean the tape glue marks? I got them, too. Afraid that I might ruin the paint!

{-) Hama - "Masterpiece" I'd definitely attribute to your own work - I'm still but a young Jedi in comparison hahaha.

Hande - Sadly the marks didn't rub off in my case. The rubbing I did do only proceeded to make the areas lighter. I used some wet & dry (2000) to level the bad areas off then repainted. I've learnt not to leave any tape on for very long. This time I removed it as soon as the paint had dried and not keep it on overnight as I had in the past. Another thing I did this time was to stick the tape to a clean surface like a table or door to take some of the tack off before laying it onto the hull.

Lol I don't flap much when I work  {-) . If we make a mistake, that's life, we can learn and easily move on : )

Cheers both!!

Dad and I have continued to crack on with things these past 2 weeks. A lot of time has been spent bringing things together and thinking about the best way to tackle each stage.

Here's the bridge and top deck going on permanently following the installation of the lighting circuit. The bridge roof had a severe warp going on in the ply that has now finally been taken care of. All is aligned nicely.

The intention was to have the whole superstructure (in one piece) bolted down when running and then be able to lift it off for transportation. Then it dawned on us..... the dowel (see shot) provided a real solid joint but if it was affixed here, then there would be no access to the bolts.

Minor details ....  {-)

The rework was to still have the dowel pass through the deck but its fixing point has changed. A bracket on the underside of the deck now secures it in place.

Hi Mark (@Mark T) and thanks so much for your kind compliment. I consider your work to be among the very, very best. Today I introduced my Dad to your incredible Le Rochefort build diary. For those who’ve not seen it, do take a look at Mark's inspiring build and the jaw-dropping levels of detail and dedication he achieves in his work https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,66046.0.html (https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,66046.0.html)

Significant progress on the ZZ has been made possible with Dad's help. We're enjoying to put in a good few hours each day on the build. Here's what we've been up to this week in between sightseeing.

The davits are on on both sides. All 4 sit on extended ledges which are connected to the upper deck. The columns are affixed to the main deck below. We had planned to put little screws in through the ledges to really secure each davit in place but testing the idea saw the first davit start to split so we stopped.

Guidance for future builders.

At the time of writing, the decals are self-adhesive and not water transfers. I made a whopper of a mistake and so lost one of the main Smit logos for the funnel. It's my fault entirely, I should've tested more before diving in. The decals are good quality but beware of your fingerprints being picked up then clouding any clear areas. I opted to use the Dutch flag in place of the lost logo.

Also the Dutch flag is the wrong way up in the main photo on the box. The red stripe should be at the top. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Netherlands

Hi Alan,

Great to hear from you and thanks for stopping by. I hope you're keeping well.

Indeed the hammer has been down these past months with the aim of sailing her this month. Dad and I put in a good amount of hours almost daily for about 3 weeks straight and every minute was a joy. Especially the tying of knots in elastic with our sausage fingers hahaha.

Davits done, lifeboats next.

The canvas material that comes with the kit is fine but we agreed another colour would look better. The kit stuff got used for testing. My Dad tried out applying PVA glue to the underside of the canvas, then having wrapped a lifeboat in clingfilm sat the canvas on top drawing it tight. They were then left overnight and came off easy, cap-like. Good result!

The edges were then trimmed and a 5mm strip of the same material applied (also PVA'd on the inside).

Looks about ready =)

The box was made from dibond (ali skin > composite > ali skin) and a selection of joints from the DIY shop. My wife helped to get this going so I need to give her a shout out too.

Used self-adhesive foam pieces inside, these are quite firm but shouldn't bother the urethane finish. The hull line sits snug down the middle with no lateral movement sideways.

The stern butts up against a foam section covered with a microfiber cloth. Additional rolled hand-towels here and there stop any other possible shifting.

Another one of Dad's ideas was to use the foam's resistance to keep the hull pinned in place. This works very well indeed. The railholders spin 360 to allow for the bar's removal but they are not loose enough so that they can move in transit.

The forward one rests flush on the superstructure with minimal pressure and no friction.

Quite an elegant carrying case and the final touches are exquisit!
Looking forward to the footage of the maiden voyage !!
You probably are - and you should be - going to stuff the sides of the vessel as well inside the case. I have some experience about the forces that attack the precious load in the car. No matter how great the friction seems, when you try it on the "kitchen table".
I love the teamwork approach of farther-son, too  :-))
Below, you may have spotted my photos from the Hamburg birthday celebration already. The ocean tugs Holland and Elbe are somewhat similar to the Zwarte Zee.
Good job!

When I built my Fairmount tug I struggled with the covers for the boats - I used brass covered with epoxy coated cloth which looked OK as I couldn't think of anything else.  I wish that I had used your method which looks far better and much more realistic too.  A fantastic build  :-)) :-))

Hi All,

Cheers @ Alan, Hande, Mark, Ian for the kind and thoughtful comments. @Hande yes, absolutely and thanks for the advice! I had a mix of small towels and bubblewrap stuffed in around the hull, being extra cautious like ;) The lake is around 30 mins walk from home but the trolley did a good job! Only need to remember never to stand it up.

This was the scene at 7AM on the day, some light breeze but nothing to hinder ZZ :) Sorry tiny photos are from my phone.

Dad and I were laughing when we spoke about all of those half-mil tolerances that we painstakingly chased that are completely lost from sight at 50 yards hahahaha.

https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/831172640

(https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/831172640)She's very stable to sail. With the sleek hull, and the battery and motor combo used, we had well over 2 hours of almost continuous time on the water. Docking was done with care, letting her drift slowly on inertia each time from about 5 yards away.

There are a few things left including to make a little battery compartment for the lighting and install a switch, some ballast too needs putting in permanently. I'm saving these to do during the rainy season which is almost upon us in Japan.

The fleet (so far).

Thanks so much Hande. Yeah, you're right about the tolerances haha!

The rudder uses the full throw of the servo, I'm not sure what this is degree-wise but with the rudder being rather small, the turning circle is on the large side. The 930kv motor is direct drive, and as ZZ is physically heavier, I thought she'd need more power than the 700kv used in the Banckert. If I'm honest I think that maybe a 700~800kv would've been fine. The hull is much sleeker and inertia allows her to glide a lot when coming off the throttle. The limitation on speed I'm seeing after two outings is the height the water comes up the sides of the bow. It can get a little high for comfort if pushed. Still, she's not designed to be sailed at high speed, but it's fun to know what she can do other than gently amble round at scale {-)

Cheers @Ralph for the follow  O0

Tolerance is only required when you display it and some dipstick pokes something and says 'How did you make that' and bends or breaks it. A piece of 4 x 2 (100 x 50) is a good deterrent, also known as a Memory Stick.
