HI peeps, need some advice on painting a modern warship with three different colours on the hull and the deck, as in what order to paint/ spray to get the best out of the model its a 1/96 HMS Amazon.

I would think that the simplest rule is lightest colours first. Darker colours will cover up lighter ones more easily than vice versa.

Thanks for the reply, I understand, but is it the side of the hull 1st or you do the decks as they are different colours, and i assume you brush paint the fittings after you've done the deck as they will be the same as the hull.

This is one of those cases where the correct single answer to a single question is that there are multiple cases of 'it depends' on the specifics of the ship being painted.
A good practice is to paint during building. Especially fittings before they are attached.
If at all possible paint the superstructure before securing it to the deck.
If model can be built with superstructure not integral to deck, leave off superstructure and paint hull/deck assembly absent of that superstructure.
If using spray application it will be simplest to spray hull with base hue of grey then when it has cured mask hull sides and spray deck color as it is usually much easier to mask the hull sides than mask the deck.

Somewhere I have read that happened to one person on account of using different brands of paint.
As for subtle, non-circusy, variations of color - there was a time while Dad was in USN during Cold War that while being on the pier watching his ship return from deployment I noticed 5, yes, count them, five, discernibly different hues and sheens of haze grey down the side of the hull of USS Glennon, DD-840.
Similar but fewer a decade later for USS Vulcan, AR-5.

Cheers guys for the input, I think it's trial and error as I don't have an airbrush so it looks like I have to do some brushing in the tight spots. But hyho artistic licences :police:
