Title: Starting a glow / IC engine ...
Post by: Martin (Admin) on October 02, 2022, 10:41:08 am

Via email to Mayhem ....

Hi Martin
I have in my possession a Vosper Perkasa Torpedo Boat, its about 1.1m long (see pics)
that belonged to my late father.
It has an Acoms r/c transmitter but has a petrol engine as you can see.
Question: I've got no idea how to start this engine, can you advise?
Also I wish to sell it as I won't use it, how much (ball park) do you think it would fetch?  I see non fuel ones asking around £350.
Any assistance would be appreciated

Greetings!

There are a couple of ways to start an IC or glow plug motor;
1. with a pull start cord, bit like a lawn mower, chain saw etc,
2. most of us use an electric motor & a starting belt.

Equipment you will need:
Fresh glow fuel (about 2 - 5% nitro)
 new glow plug, (& spanner)
'power panel' or glow plug driver,
fuel pump of some kind (to fill boat tank),
 pull start cord, or
 starter motor, belt, battery

Here's an article I wrote many moons ago.... I don't think much has fundamentally changed in the mean time!

Hopefully the engine was stored 'Clean' and rotates freely with the plug out.?

As pointed out on the Mayhem Facebook group the engine doesn't look as if it has ever been run,, there is no sign of oil inside the hull or on the outside of the engine. So shouldn't be any problems with it turning over. However if the intrention is to sell the boat then best not to attempt to run the engine as inexperienced hands can cause damage.
