Title: NiMh batteries, getting confused.
Post by: Terry on November 25, 2022, 05:02:23 pm
Does anyone know of a definitive source of information/advice regarding charging/discharging Nihm Battery packs. Finding it all a bit confusing. To be specific I have a new 7.2v 3000mah pack.

Hi Terry, I have the same battery and as far as I'm aware, these batteries don't need to be discharged other than through normal use.
I usually charge mine, once a week, at just 1 amp. I also give it (them) a charge at the full capacity i.e 3 amps just before a sailing session. I've got a 2500 as well so, that one gets the full charge of 2.5 amps for the session or just 1amp (weekly) for keeping the cells topped up.

Lastly, I'm no expert but I've yet to have one fail on me...

Hope this helps.

Ray.

What sort of charger do you have?

For the first few charge cycles set the charger to 300mA and charge for 15 hours. After that you can fast charge at 3A until the peak detection cuts off the charge (up to 1hr 15 minutes). The pack is best stored fully charged. The pack will get warm when charging, but should not get uncomfortably hot.

The RC S65 is a decent charger. You can control all the major parameters with one of those.
