Hi to everyone just to say I'm back still doing my last boat Resolve nearly done been doing alot again on it ,weather I sail her I just dont know but the big news is I'm starting a new build
it cost a arm and a leg got it from the model shop in Japan and its is the big Battleship Yamato 1/250 scale and its all wood 6mm thick 4.8 ft Long and I have just started cutting out some of the parts so I'm going to photo most of the build.
The manual is all in Japanese been trying to get it translated no go as of yet.
-
Wow, good luck with this, I shall be very interested to see how this goes.
Cheers

Great photos of the Battleship Yamato.
-
Yamato build update the first lot of photos was to show the box etc which was first class also had a lovely flower and other goodie's in it very nice touch, they also show you the start of the build and the Lengh of the build it does get bigger as the build goes ones far I have been getting the parts out for the build of the hull which I have never done before thats why I'm taking my time the thickness of the wood is 6mm/4mm and you can see the one miss cut which I had to glue together and held together with clips for 3 dayside to the cold not taking any chance's in the staying together the next lot of photo's is most of the bits to build the hull I have to manuals the first in English I'm looking at it for help as it was from a mag that sold the model in monthly parts I found it on line and started to print it out for help thats alot of ink jets, but the main manuals I'm going by is the manual that came with the kit I got the translator now on my phone and I that a photo of the stages and in translate into English what a great help so far its taken me 2 weeks to get this far and not glue anything as of yet just cutting outa bit of sanding and placing the bits as per the manual so here goes a few more photos.
-
that last photo show you the repair job I done with super glue
-
Looks like a quality kit. Going to follow your build with interest. Are you building it static or converting it to RC?
Ralph
-
Hi Ralph ever since I was looking at it on the Woody Joe site in Japan I was thinking about it ,it's got 4 props I may email Japan and ask I think I would need a lot of help with the convert at the moment my wife doesn't like it and call,s it a killer because we were all in the R.N I was for 12 yrs it's because of the world war 2.
-
Think if I was converting it to RC I'd only power 2 props and leave the others as free turning dummies,or maybe not fit them at all. Maybe a couple of 380 or 400 size low drain motors would work or perhaps small brushless motors, but I don't know enough about them to suggest anything. Weight/stability might be an issue if the superstructure is 4 and 6mm ply as well.
Ralph
-
more of the cutting out and filing down getting very sore hands with the cutting.
-
these photos are showing the fitting of the parts they are just sitting in place none are fixed with glue etc been to cold in the workshop to use wood glue ,I dont want the frames to fall of when touch or moved it costs to much for this model and I will not rush and it wil get done first class well to my best standards like or better than my other build, hoping you can follow ok
its near the end of the frame for the hull.
-
Some more of the pre fitting to see how the fittings will look not many more then its on to the put together.
-
The next set of photo's a few more bits to cut out and all the paints and glues for the whole boat, all the paints ate Tamiya also the spray paints the makers in Japan said its the best paints to use for the wood etc,
-
Here we go onto the first of putting together this wonderful model the first parts to be glue d together is the base of the Hull using Javis Aliphatic Resin Wood Glue
put the glue on one side only and joined the two parts together clean up any glue that is showing and when I was happy all is level all ways I put tap over both sides to keep
the two parts together and used lead bits in the tubs to keeps together and not to move.I will not touch it for 24hrs to 48 hrs to really set due to the weather.
-
Looking good Wallace! You have one more interested follower of the build.
Cheers,
Phil
-
..... and another following :-))
Cheers,
Ray.
-
After 30+ hrs I had a look at my new baby to see if it had taken the gluing well good news the bound between the two parts of the bottom of the hull
have bounded great ,no need to rush the job, the next lot of photos are more on the fixing of more parts and the first two are showing the fix hull in place and can be moved, then it was onto fixing the port/stbd sides to hold the ribs I took my time over this and over a few hours making sure all parts were sanded and filed down for a good fit.
-
following on from the last set of photos both sides glued and make sure both are level then secured them both for another 24 hours to bond.
-
After another 24 hrs of fixing and letting them dry hard here are the next set of ribs to be clean up etc and glued into place making sure they are all up right and level
as I have said I'm not rushing putting it together ,I just want to enjoy the making and get it right,( been looking at the build from 6 yrs ago that was sold from a magazine
which you get a few parts every mth) the hull was in 4 parts and you get some ribs ie 4 put them together also some metal parts put them together,no no not for me.
this way is the best way of building a boat from wood from the hull upward, hoping you are enjoying the build I'm trying my best with the photos.
Using a toothpick with some of the gluing not to much messing.
-
There's no "right" speed to build a model. Only you can decide how to get the maximum pleasure from doing it, and after all, that's the whole point, isn't it? :-))
Looks like you will end up with a nice straight, square hull with the care you are taking, which is not always a given on a hull this size. Should be an impressive sight when she is finished!
Greg
-
Patience is the word, looking good, I will be following this build :-))
-
Many thanks to all who have sent in there views of my build have taken everyone onboard so many many thanks and so glad that you like what I'm doing,
I'm into my 4th week of building and I spend only 2 hrs each day in the boatyard my workshop years ago when I was building and sailing I use to live in the workshop
most of the day but after nearly 10 yrs of not doing any I'm not going to rush doing this lovely model.
Thanks to you all for your support. wallace
-
Another follow up of the building of the hull near the end not not rushing so after these parts which are getting glued and put into place and left to go off for 24 hrs
only another 4 rib supports to go into place.
-
It's going well Wallace, nice steady work. Great photos showing your progress, keep them coming.
-
Getting all ready for fixing ,sanding and lining up the final 4 parts (ribs ) for the base of the hull very pleased with the way its gone only two hiccups along the the way first one was way back broke a joining piece but all got fix the next first blood to one of my knives it drew blood on my hand but all well.So the last 4 ribs go to the end of the stern then it will all be left for 24/48 hrs to really set.
-
The last two photos shows a big error that can happen to anyone so before you lovely people following my build I put the side piece and tape it in place to see how it fits when the time came to glue and fix it into place it was put on the correct way with the small port holes at the top looking back on the photos that I have taken really helps in all way,
the next set of photos will be the Finnish of the ribs in place now onto the ships side.
-
That's looking good.
Hope your hand's ok - I find every model demands a blood sacrifice at some point.
Ralph
-
Looking good Wallace.
I’m sure the real reason superglue was invented was for us modellers to glue ourselves back together after the inadvertent blood sacrifice that often occurs! Hope it was nothing serious and look forward to seeing your next instalment :-))
-
Onto more fittings all ribs in place and strong as you can see I held the hull up in one hand to show how strong it insert job was to fix a part on the side top on both sides and let it bond for another 24 hrs.
-
Here's the next parts only a few but its going to take a fews days.
-
here's the right photo for the next parts getting carried away.
-
Im upto date with the photos of over two weeks of building this set of photos were put together this Mothers Day Sunday 19th March 2023
so now I hope to post daily of the build.
here's the build at the stern only 7 parts today I put together 3 off them and had to bond them together for 24 hrs.
It looks so easy but if you rush it then its all out like I have said a little bit at a time will get great great rewards hope you like.
-
and more
-
Here's Moday's build only a few pieces near the stern just four parts which took over 2 hrs this afternoon,I make sure the pieces are all smooth and I give them a dry fit to make sure they fit
100% I make sure they are numbered to put in the right place then glue one at a time remove all waste glue onto the next one and so on press and hold into place then out come the clips etc as you can see I use alot on everything one on have a good look making sure everyone is set and level upright and all areas across then its time to tidy up and sit back and have a good look, and look at the next stage to do ,just two parts to put on at the ends both sides have to bend into shape so they are into warm water will shape them later then leave to dry overnight time now is 14.35pm cuppa then 40 winks back tomorrow.
-
Today's build Tuesday 21st March 23, Just over two hours in the morning and two hours after lunch the first parts were No16/17 had to be shaped to fit the last two supports of the hull I have put the drawing with the translate to show what has to be done alot of filing and tons of fitting to get it right then adding wood glue to fit then holding both sides in place for 24 hrs, onto the afternoon's work
-
the last photo shows what has to be done over 2hours once again not got it 100% at the moment will get onto it tomorrow and to add the metal part.
-
Today is Wed's 22nd March build not to much done but the little bits take time and 100% good fitting,so the photo's of the build today was a few hrs.AM and a few hrs. PM the first was to show the stern bits thats was put together yesterday just a very little bit to clean up but 99% happy the next show's the ship stern to bow I'm so happy with it at the moment then another close up of the stern follow by the two pieces I had to sand down and fit the first metal part the next one shows both sides done still dont know what they are for ??? I did put clips onto the two sides to keep in place, now onto the bow as you can follow I put the build page next to the parts that were cut out and clean up the next all parts were put together as the manual says to do but not to glue then I started to take it apart and glued the first two parts with the rod in place that has to be cut ,as you can see I love my cuppa more tomorrow.
-
Topic name changed
-
Today Thursday 23rd March progress on the build of the Yamato todays was only a few hrs (because I had to plant out my Broard Beans which were started in the greenhouse)
so todays photo's are about putting the parts together for the bow which was 16 bits done the first two yesterday so today I done the rest in stages to let them bond making sure all are lined up I then put the clamps on to hold them for 24 hrs to fully harden then it is sand sand more sanding to get the right shape.
-
information was before sorry
-
Friday 24th March todays photo of the build is still about the bow yesterday all parts were glued together and allowed to set for 24 hrs removed the clips and have started on sanding the bow into shape already been sanding for 2+ hours will carry on tomorrow not to rush .
-
Todays photo's of the build, still on the bow sanding and sanding by hand another three hours and its looking good.
-
That looks like a good bit of sanding you've done to achieve that shape - it would drive me crazy - so must be very satisfying to get it done :-))
Ray.
-
Such lovely patient and accurate work :-))
-
You did a very very nice work and result to reproduce one of symbolic parts of the Yamato, bulbous bow.!! O0 :-))
It must be troublesome and difficult to shape the bulbous bow of the ship. :}
The pics attached below are from 1/10 Yamato in so-called Yamato Museum in Kure city where real Yamato was built.
I have ever been there once.
-
Today is Sunday 26/03 first of all many thanks for all the kind and lovely remarks I have been getting about my build of the Battleship Yamato it is a big brain tester for me at my age but after 12 great years in the Royal Navy you always learn to do things if you put your mind to its with this build I have said I will not rush the builds far it has taken me over two days to sand the Bow into shape all by hand with sand paper hopefully will get it done today, also many thanks for your very lovely posts from Capt Podge,Mark T and the great photos posted by Backerther from Japan catch you all later having a cuppa then onto more sanding. :-)) :-)) :-) .

Many thanks Martin I'm doing me best.
-
Back again Sunday evening 26 march after another two hours of very fine sanding I think I have nearly got there so I will go onto the next part of the build, when I put the wood primmer on I will have a good look at the bow to see if it need fine tuning if it does I will be using model putty, the photo's today are showing you from all angles what the bow looks like at the front without being glued most likely fix it into place tomorrow then some more shaping of the next parts to be fixed.I have also put a photo of the next parts to be done.
-
Hy to all start of another week on my new build,
But first how many spotted my mistake on the last photos I'm first It was the bow section that I'm sanding down I took photos of my work with it upside down my big mistake so sorry.
-
Here's the bow the right way up before its glued into place
-
Yep, spotted your deliberate mistake but decided not to mention it - it was a dry run after all ;D .
Still looking forward to seeing your progress Wallace :-))
Ray.

Back again Monday 27 march and more work on the Yamato today was the fitting of the bow ,the top support and also the tops of both the side to join up with the ones on both sides from the stern, the job with the bow is I had to get it right as the wood glue works fast so I put alot on so I could keep moving it so that it lines up with the whole ship it took me around 30mins etc to get it right so hopefully tomorrow will tell when all clips tape come off , also I had to shape the end by the bow to get the top two bits to fit I used warm water to make the ends soft thats why all the clips and tape are on the model its not glue as of yet the wood has to dry first hopefully tomorrow I can glue Manaul photo taken to show you what I had to do.
-
Thanks Ray for your reply I was not thinking at all but this morning I was full of beans .
-
Tuesdays 28March the next few parts to be put into place onto the Yamato today I removed all tape and clips and please to say all parts held together 100% and the parts that were put into water and mounded into shape dried well so its all go for gluing the parts that I put into place were the port and stbd. top sides with the portholes showing I also had to do some more sanding to the top of the bow its on the photos from yesterday and also the piece in place from the bow to No 5 support while that all took place and the wood glue has been on for 4hrs I went ahead and cut out No20 clean it up and just had a little fit I was a bit unhappy with the fit as it wasn't fitting 100% it was just out I think the 3rd upright from the bow is just a little bit out tomorrow is another day and I will study it well I hope in the end I can put it right its only a wee bit out I may have to use my putty to fill and when dried sand it in.Hope you can understand todays photos. :-)) :-))
-
Wednesday 29 March only a little bit done today photo of what has to be done on the planking starting with two arkward bits on both sides I have glued into place one side and puts clips on.
-
Today Thursday 30 march todays build was setting up with the top planking took me a long time today to sand the bow end to fit into the piece already there but after a few hours done it and I moved on to the next piece going towards the stern a bit of sanding and cutting one end, at this moment I have not glued and fix to the frame no rush got to get it right hopefully will start gluing tomorrow. :-))
-
Friday 31 March todays build was checking all over and then gluing and fixing the other side top planking clip and left to dry over night.
-
forgot the photo

Today 's Build is 5th April not posted since last Friday so from fri. upto today was cleaning up the model for the big job of the planking on the port and stbd sides of the Yamato also the sanding where I glued the first two metal parts the wood had to be rounded to the parts shape which took ages but its looking good at the moments the past two days been cutting a few of the wood for the planking, done away with the clips to hold them in place have posted a photo of how I'm doing it now its a long jog but to me its worth it,I measure the length for the planking cut the piece mark where its going to be fix to and marked and then drill using a 0.05mm bit then clean up the but side after drilling I then marry the piece to the frames and hold into place with push pins and doing that way does not mess up the planks thats cut it looks all clean the tiny holds will be fill with putty and sanded at a later stage the photos show it all and the pieces I have done will be glue hopefully tomorrow then left to dry for 24 hrs thats why its a long job the planking is sorry folks not going to rush it because I want to do it right.
-
Its Thursday 6th April hard at it for a few hours onto the planking the photos show planks cut and pin into place to see how they look the last photos show that I have glue a few planks onto the bottom of the model and held in place for 24hrs the pins are the yellow ones that are fixed also with all the clips its going to be a long job cutting marking and drilling pin holes cleaning up the glue as I go along.
-
Today is Good Friday so todays photos are about the planking removed pins and clamps from Thursdays work and put a few more bits for the planking every day now I'm finding new ways of doing the planking and removing the wood glue as well so all is looking good hope you all like.
-
Looking very good indeed Wallace. I'm enjoying to read and follow your regular updates on the build.
Phil
-
Saturday 8th April todays photos and update first I remove all clamps and pins from the day before all have set great so today I cut and put a few move planks onto the model all fully glue and as you can see tons of clamps to hold in place for 24 hrs.
-
Easter Sunday 9th Apr. only work done today was to remove all clamps and all pin and all clips, had a good look how its all sitting but me being me I layed two small planks only.
-
Easter Sunday 9th Apr. ..... I laid two small planks only.
Whoa! Take it easy! .... Bank Holiday weekend dude! {-)
-
Thanks Martin I know its Easter w/e,never do anything at Easter haven't for years,
Was just passing a few minutes until the football was on.
-
Today is Easter Monday cold and raining all day so the best thing to do was to spend bit of time on my build so for a few hours started on the Stbd side with the planking only laid three bits.
-
Tuesday 11 Apr update done a bit more planking on the Port side removing Mondays pins put a few planks to the stern so tomorrow I will start on the stbd side and get to the stage of the port side which will take a few days I'm pleased with the way its gone my first time doing planking but in the end it will be first class, broke my first bit of planking today was clamping bit strong so I renew the piece.
-
Wednesday 12th April more work done on the Yamato so todays work was to remove all pins and turn the model over to do the planking on the stbd side ,what I done was wrote the planks down onto paper the order they went on on the port side somehow they have gone on a lot better after cutting a few and placing them onto the model pinned them down but none are glued into place, thats the job for tomorrow.its looking good.
-
Thursday 13 Apr. more planking cut to size and pinned in, hopefully I will start to glue some in place,I have ordered a pin pusher with 7mm pins, so anyone who is following my build of the Yamato use one of the pin pushers to hold the planks in place while the glue sets and can you leave the pins in etc I got one on order and its on its way and I will need it on my next build later on in the year and its called the PRIZN EUGEN and another all wood alot of planking sides and decks,
-
Today Friday 14th April is the end of week 7 of the build and so far really enjoying the build it has tested me as I have not built with wood altogether yes I have made a few mistakes but done it again but so far really pleased with the build, today work was to glue the planks that I had cut on Thursday did not get them all done maybe tomorrow. :-)) :-))
-

Wow - already planning your next build. Do you expect to have Yamato finished before you start Prinz Eugen? That's a lot of building to squeeze into the next few months! :-)) :-))
Greg
-
Hi SailorGreg thanks for your post,I will put you right the next build as I posted about the Prinz Eugen is going to be a xmas present from my girls and yes I know there is alot of building to be done here on the Yamato and I would not open the box until I have finished this build its not like me to do two builds at once hopes this cleans this up for you.
-
Todays update on the build of the Yamato Monday 17th Apr. more photos of the long job of planking both sides alot done I will be so onto the the sanding and fine shaping.
-
Tuesday brings more planking had a good few hours done a bit at the base around the stern.
-
more planking done
-
Wednesday 19 Apr more on the planking done the stbd side at the rear of the base near the keel and also re-done the part I did yesterday was not happy with it but done it and I'm so happy did not break any planking a very good few hours this afternoon.
-
Thursday 20th Apr. todays work on the Yamato was re-doing the mistakes that I have found around the planking taken a few planks off and not one broken study the manual on the build and under stood what I have done wrong the great thing is I re-done the planking and its looking fab I just took my time bit by bit and looking at the photos Im very happy still got a few more to do.
-
Well Wallace, it's good that you spotted the errors in good time and you've been able to rectify. Would have been a lot worse if you had already started painting :o
Ray.
-
Today is Monday 24th April here's the latest photos of the build of the Battleship Yamato have not posted for a few days as I was redoing my errors, good news done them all and getting close to the end off all the planking hopefully this week but I will take my time.
-
Still Monday photos of what has been done over the past few days.
-
Today's build Wednesday 26th April have today done the final planking and errors, filled the gaps and my next job is the stern which is made up of 10 pieces.
-
Thursday 27th April today photos of the build is the starting of the build up of the stern block which has 10 pieces to glue together and pegged then it has to be sanded down and fitted then its onto the hull for shaping which is going to take a few days or longer.the photos show the bow block together and glued but not fix to the stern, always another day.
-
Today being Friday 28 April here's the latest photos on the work on the Yamato not much done had to get my eyes tested so I done a few hours working on the stern, cutting and fixing from yesterday and also sanding the parts into shape, happy with the work done I also turn the model over so I could get to the inside and what I did was to paint all the stern inside with wood glue, over in Japan where I got the model from and who built the kit said after the planking to the stern is done apply adhesive firmly inside to prevent cracking after painting the hull will do the rest tomorrow.
-
The photos of the build are from Saturday 29 April and its the all about the stern and shaping it.
-
Sunday 29 April and also Monday !st May is still on the stern and fitting it to the model.
-
Todays photos are from Monday 1 May .
-
Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd May is the start of the sanding of the hull will be a long job by hand.
-
Wednesday more photos of the hull getting sanded.
-
Today being Wednesday 10th May just a few more photos of the sanding of the hull, doing it by hand into my second week of sanding its taking shape will need a bit of wood filler, and then more sanding not over doing things, about 2 hours aday so along way to go.
-
Today is Sunday 14 May so since last Wednesday I have been sanding and sanding and getting the shape of the hull its coming, and on Saturday I started filling in the gaps with wood putty put it on by my fingers alot better to do, left it to dry and harden and to day I got back to sanding to me its looking good and some bits need to be done.
-
More photos of the hull.
-
Looking really good, nice work :-))
-
Today is Thursday 18th May These next 4 photos are the near final of the sanding of the hull, doing it by hand is long and hard work but I enjoyed it will go over the whole hull with a very fine paper 600 then its the first primer coat which will highlight any faults of the hull.
-
today again May 18th more upto date of the build, the photos show what I have been doing today checking on the put together of the Bilge Keel two parts to each side left to dry and harden over night glad to report all ok I sanded to a small angle on the fitting sides to the hull and I have drilled a very fine hole 4 in total on both Keels im going to glue a very small length of thin wire into the holes and drill small holes into the hull where the keels are going to be glued just to give it bait more hold and strength ,also I have tested the fitting of the upper deck and they are not fixed or glued and the last job I done was to re-fit the metal parts which didn't take last time in fitting you can see the glue I have used this time will leave for 24 hours with the clips in place to really harden there you are all upto day getting close to the first painting of the hull.
-
HI Wallace :-)) will she sail by r/c or is she just a static model ? but looks a very nice build very well done so far
chrisb :-))
-
Hi Wallace,
I have been enjoying your steps to build the IJN battleship Yamato and also you have done a very good job on every part of her building.
But I have noticed one point about the shape of bow line. If the shape of the line of your model is faithfully based upon the
plan of the kit, it should be OK, needless to say.!! :-)) :-))
Or if the shaping of the line has not been completely done yet at this time, it is also OK.!! :-)) :-))
The point I have felt something for you to reconsider is the delicate curve of bow line over the bulbous bow at around the water line. See the pic below of 1/10 museum model whose line is comparatively linear at around the water line....
I have ever built several Yamato models so far very popular among ship enthusiasts in Japan and the Yamato had some
peculiar lines or shapes, some of which were not seen in other BBs of navies of the world.
Above is just my personal impression about the bow line and never take it wrong nor malicious criticism. :D :-))
1:1/10 Yamato in the Yamato Museum in Kure city where 1/1 Yamato was born. :embarrassed:

Today is Wednesday 24th May here's the latest photos of the build of the Yamato, this section of photos are about the decking fitting and sanding,( with all the sanding I have been doing the sandpaper has sanded my nails right down) so the phots show the deck pieces in place but only for fitting not for gluing yet.
-
More on the deck fitting.
-
more from earlier days still about the decking and also the port and stbd side Bilge Keel all done and fitted it took me a week to get them right so I hope they look ok, the decking is still not fixed and glued have glued the photo etched parts to the bow end and to the stern glue with epoxy glue, the next lot of photos are of the boat hanger struts and you can see by the photo alot of small parts to be glued together.
-
Friday May 26 Here's the essemble of the Boat hanger struts just need to prime them for painting then to fit later.
-
The first real coat of primer going onto the hull etc.
-
More on the priming of the hull and deck.
-
Good news the Yamato's deck is fully fixed to the hull and has bonded great after the coating of the hull which has had two coats I'm rubbing it smooth with grade 600 sandpaper a little bit of filling is needed so more sanding to be done.
-
Today is the 6th May 2023, over the past week since last posting I have been smoothing the hull and using putty to fill the gaps that the primer has found its been a long jog smoothing the hull by hand but I fine you get a better job done (also it files down your hand nails ) :-)) I have filled the bow out abit after great reviews by my followers I think it looks alot better,I'm on my 2nd tin of primer just on the hull just a little bit more to do on the bow then one more coat of primer, then start to fit the rudder and secondary rudder and also the screw shafts 4 in all.
-
The re-shaping of the bow.
-

Today is the 21st June 2023 its been a few weeks since last post but I have been working on the build sanding and filling and also building up the props etc.
-
More work on the hull and back onto the ship's side's filling in and sanding and primming again.
-
The last lot of photos was putting on the copper wire all around the ship and getting the potholes marked Out and these photos are much the same but found out buy not rushing things I was not happy with the line out of the holes so have re-filled with putty and left to dry.
-
Today is July 3rd nearly 2 wks since my last post but I have been building every day these next few photos are the hull getting filled and sanded once again its nearly there just the bow end which needed the most
-
Over the past 2 wks have given the hull a rest and moved onto the start of the Building of the Bridge alot of pieces to cut out and put together not to be rushed again alot put together and sanded into shape wood glued and let sit for 24 hrs.
-
More photos on the build of the Bridge and waiting for the glue to set.
-
Still building the Bridge and started to prime some of the metal parts that go onto the bridge ,using metal primer by hand and using my new toy to hold the parts while drying.
-
More on the structure assembly of the bridge as you can see alot of parts to put together have also glued into place some of the metal parts using epoxy adhesive ,I hope the pages that I have posted help you understand the build which is all in Japanese my phone has come in handy.
-
As always very interesting. With the greatest respect I would counsel the bottom on the bulbous bow needs to be more curved upwards as it will look a lot better.
keep up the good work
Cheers
Geoff
-
Thanks Geoff, :-)) about the bow I will look into it and look at photos sent from Japan of the Yamato the manual that comes with the model is all in Japanese and what to do is not much help and that this my very first time building all in wood but I'm learning made alot of mistakes but put rights I will try and do something about the shape of the bow looks like the putty is going to get used again.
-
I went back through the building manual about the shape of the bow and I'm sure by looking at it I did follow the shape as per the manual I put my hands up if it looks bit of, but to me it looks fine as its my first build with wood im happy with the build yes I have made errors but who hasn't have posted photos of the manual pages that I followed.
But please Im so happy with all the comments that I get will keep on improving :-)) :-)) :-) wallace
-
A few more on the build and the last photo I have started gluing the very small porthole covers there is around 158 but being so small I have lost 2 already but I can hide them got to be so careful.
-
May I suggest you Google Yamato 1/10 scale model. There is one in Japan which may give you some excellent reference pictures. Also there is an excellent 3-d book by Kagero available which has superb views of the whole ship.
Cheers

Gone back and put the parts on the stbd side and also another coat of primer, next will be the port side the same as the stbd side fittings.
-
Sorry to all my followers put the wrong words in above photos are from the port side stbd to do sorry >>:-( >>:-( :police:
-
Just a few more shots of the build the hull is getting there just odds and sods to do.
-
Today is Thursday July 13th and I have been doing the planking of the upper decks have got upto the the first gun deck on the stbd side and the book says lay from the centre line of the deck to the outside will post the manual shot tomorrow to show how I have to do it the planking is so thin got to be so careful so I'm doing the planking in three's and four's using alot of tape as well.
-
Friday 14th July 2023 few more hours doing the upper deck planking slowly but surely getting there.
Have put a photo on here so you can see what the manual say's and does't say on the deck planking
-
Today is Sunday 16th July 2023, more photos on the planking of the upper deck. The work done is from Saturday 15th July and today 16th July got to really careful as the planking is so thin and you can see alot of cutting thats why you dont rush to get it done no time scale on this job, then back onto the hull.
-
Tuesday 18th July 2023, today's posting is still on the planking of the upper main decks both sides are planked just have to carefully cut the the rest of the circle where the main battery sit on have shown with the photos the three positions they will be sitting and also the bridge section alot of work to be done on that over the weeks to come tomorrow I will turn the model over and trim the over size planking and very lightly sand them off, next is back to the hull a few more jobs to do ,the bow to be finished and the stern to be sanded and painted with primmer then undercoated and full coat after.
I can tell you from my heart as this is my first ever build of a warship thats made all in wood, I'm really enjoying building just taken my time a few hours aday and 5 mths into the build and I will still not rush the build also many thanks to everyone who have posted comments thank you so much. :-)) :-)) :-)
-
"I'm really enjoying building". That's all that really matters in the end. But you are also producing a lovely model and we are all enjoying watching it emerge from that pile of wood. Keep it up! :-)) :-))
Greg
-
Many thanks Greg for your kind words, well it keeps me out of trouble at my young age of 77 yrs . :-)) :-))

A tip for smoothing the planks is to use a Stanley Knife blade as a cabinet scraper at about 45 degrees. Long strokes and it will very gradually take the high points off and give a satin smooth appearance. An observation which may be incorrect is that I notice you are planking the quarterdeck where the aircraft sit - I may have miss-read but wasn't that area a steel deck, could be wrong.
Keep up the good work a very interesting thread and well done.
Geoff

Here're the pics of rear deck of IJN Yamato 1/1 and 1/10.
-
Kiyo......speaking the Mother tounge where IJN Yamato was built, you may have knowledge as to why the Teak planked decking was not extended to the stern Quarter Deck, or the Forepeak Deck?
My only knowledge of a comparable Ship is BB63 the Missouri, where her decking extended to both extremities Fwd & Aft....I walked the length of her & confirm the Teak decking was in 1987, kept in superb condition
From images, it appears that the Royal Navy vessels of somewhat similar or and earlier vintage also had the Teak decking to both extremities

I do not have much knowledge to the point about the planking you referred .... :-X Give me some time to research into.. O0
But this tendency could be seen in (scout) plane operation decks in many major IJN ships like heavy cruisers and battleships.
1; IJN battleship Ise in her final configuration. modified to operate more planes...namely "Battle carrier"??
2; IJN heavy-cruiser Takao, damaged seriously by UK sub in July 1945.
Sorry for a bit of deviation from your Yamato, wallace.!! :-X

While not an expert on naval ships I would imagine the lack of teak decking in these areas is due to the dirty nature of the activities taking place. The forepeak has the anchor handling machinery and would be subjected to mud and rust from the anchor chains, both leaving any teak decks in poor condition. The aft deck where there is aircraft would be likely subjected to oil and petrol during maintenance of the aircraft as there doesn't appear to be any hanger space for this. Steel decks would be easier to clean after any spills.

Hi to the above follower's some great photo's and comments, Geoff here is my answer to your question when I was doing the planking each strip were the same length and around 1/2 mm thick so had to be really careful, when the planking was set into place I left them over night until I had done the stbd side then had to cut out the shape for the aft main gun the photos this all the planking done will show you that I did not plank the quarterdeck.Geoff thanks for following my build and love everyones comments. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
From yesterday 20th July photos of the planking all done cut out all around the Quarterdeck :-))
-
Today is Friday 21st July planking all cover up and the hull has had another coat of primer, photo of my build work-top all tided up and clean ready for the building of the bridge over 105 metal parts to be cleaned up prime and put together have show you a photo of all the parts that will be used and also a photo from the manual on what's to do, its going to keep me going for awhile so while putting parts together ,priming then writing the parts down on paper to know where they go and what they are I will be going over to the hull to see what is needed to be done some busy days and hours ahead looking forward to it. :-) :-))
-
today is the 26 Jul 23 over the past few days I had started on building of the bridge with over 100 parts, doing bit by bit and sanding the nice and smooth 400 and 800 sandpaper alot of hours have past rubbing the parts I have use down also using metal primer painting by hand you can see where the bridge will be sited on the last photo.
-
Looking very good like IJN Yamato with the bridge in addition to the powerful hull, wallace.!! :-))
The recessed part in the middle of bridge is said for anti-blast measure coming from tremendous
firepower of 46cm (18 .11inch) main batteries on the main deck. O0

Todays is Monday 14th Aug 23 been a few days since my last post, but I have been working on the model every day on the building of the bridge just about 100 bits to clean and prime and let all dry and then fitting, taking some apart as I was not happy with and then having to clean again and prime etc but its coming alone.
This model has really tested me but I have really enjoying the build and I hope you are all happy as well.

That's the thing with battleships - there are an awful lot of "little bits"! Coming on nicely though.
Greg
-
Thanks alot Greg yes it does thank ages, going back onto the hull then to start the building up.

Though the hull looks daunting due to the shape of a ship, I think it might be the easiest part of a build as the details can feel endless, and that's before you tackle the boats %% Not to put you off though Wallace, she's coming along lovely. I love the almost sci-fi style of the secondary and AA turrets.
Good work sir.
-
Hi to all just to let you know I'm still hard at the building its all the little bits and I'm not rushing will post new photos very soon on what I have done,I would be nice if I could put a little video of what's getting done but never mind.
To you all I wish you all the best for xmas and the New year and thanks for great write ups. :-))
-
No hurry mate, after all, it's a hobby not a job. Enjoy it and don't get all stressed with nonsensical deadlines. I always think that an unfinished model shown at a show helps tell the story of it being built. The paint hides the making.
-
Welcome to the "Sponge" stage! Those of us who build battleships get to the point where it just absorbs more and more time and detail with no apparent change, then all of a sudden!
There is also an illusory stage when we make short lists and find them 20 long, all done and then we make another list and find another 20 items to do......
Its surprising how much detail a large model can absorb. I'm almost two years into my 1/96 scale Hood. It just takes such a long time to make the parts.
Cheers
Geoff

Many thanks for your great posts I will just take my time and as you said its a hobby and I agree 100% it will get done when it is done there is still alot of work to be done and I hope you all have enjoyed the build I know I have take care one and all.
