Hello All,
I hope in the next few days to take delivery of a gifted of a 1/96 scale hull from my good friend and owner of ScaleWarship. This hull of the Type 26 is the first out of the mould. Please note that John has not made any plans as to making this commercial available on his web site.
This build will take some years to complete as there are no current commercial drawing available. So along with John Wiles I’ll be drawing up my own, doing all the research I can and biassing it on any photos of HMS Glasgow I can obtain.
Once I have the hull I’ll post some pictures and my plans of what function I’ll have working. I hope this build will be enjoyed by all and hopefully inspire others to get into model boating.
-
Well Dave, you've piqued my interest already, so I'll be looking in when you get started on this one O0
Ray.
-
I’m looking forward to seeing your work Dave. :-))

Thanks Allnigtin, I have. :-))
-
HI Dave i'll be following along on your build good to see you again
chrisb :-))

i ll be watching too, i am sure ive seen a video of a model t26 somewhere
-
Great to see another long term project to keep us intrigued and in suspenders to see how a component will turn out!
-
Gents,
First I’d like thank all in there interest in this build log, BUT
It’s with great sadness that I will have to put this build on hold, as Thursday I was supporting my wife in her hobby showing her dog at Crufts. When in the snow I fell over and rupture my quadricep ligament and I’m currently awaiting an MRI and operation to fix the knee. So I’m unable to get out to the workshop at this time, therefore the build has to be put on hold for a couple on months hopefully.
-
Ouch! Sorry to hear about the fall Dave.
Hopefully the MRI / operation will be successful.
Take it easy when you can...
Regards,
Ray.

Thanks Ray,
{:-{ {:-{ :(( Worried that I will not have the op in time so I can take the grandkids on their first holiday to Disney in May.

I only said B*gg*r!
Best Wishes,

Thanks Nige, :-)) :-))
I said a lot stronger when it happened which if Id posted it on MBM I would be barred. :embarrassed: :embarrassed:
-
Ouch, hope you get it sorted quickly Dave.
Bob
-
Thanks Bob,
You and me both
-
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Dave.
I know how it feels after my fall in to Wicksteed lake last year! My own fault but still technically recovering from it currently. Had an accident yesterday too- anyone who says that WW1 ram bows don’t work my cheek and jaw say otherwise O0 my Glorious slid off its bench and gave a punch to the left cheek! Nice bruise forming :embarrassed:
-
Woo, sorry to hear that Nick hope you didn’t do to much harm to you and the model.
The bruising in my knee has started to come out, the knee has a nice anti dazzle camo now.
-
Hi Gents,
I’ve received my new 1/96 Type 26 hull from Scalewarships. Unfortunately I can’t access my workshop to start on HMS Belfast, as I will be doing my own drawings this build will take some time, however I’m planning on having these working functions
Rotating main gun
Lights work on bridge, hanger, mission bay, flight deck etc.
Radars rotating.
Tried to have the mission bay doors opening.
Working crane in the Mission bay able to boom out the RIBs
Hanger door able to open and close. (As I’d planned on USS Roosevelt)
Use the same system I built on Roosevelt to allow the Merlin Helo to move in and out of the hanger
-
Well Dave, you've certainly got plenty working systems to plan ahead for. No doubt you will come up with solutions for them all.
Good to know your hull has arrived as well :-))
Cheers,
Ray.
-
Sorry to hear about your accident Dave I wish you a speedy recovery though with the need for an opp I guess it won't be that quick, so take it easy mate.
Joe.
-
HI Dave hope you are feelin better after your fall <:( an hope you made it with your grand kids to disney an any pics on your lastest build ?
ATB
chris an jen :-))
-
Hi Chris,
Had my op last Saturday and recovery is expected to take min six weeks. I’m only now able to walk a short distance with crutches.
I’ve not been able to access my workshop to do any sort of modelling. Very frustrating and bored at this time.
Still hoping to be able to travel to Disney.
-
All the best with your recover T888! :-))
-
Thanks Martin :-))
-
Get well soon Dave.
Bob
-
Sorry to hear about the calamity Dave but we'll try to keep you entertained in a suitable manner %) Tony
-
Rest up Dave, and you could always use the time to plan the next project.
Always difficult as after my heart attack 2 years ago I was banned from the workshop for 2 months, Haha I learned the art of plastic kits on the kitchen table.....OK a few problems with the good lady, but then I got my granddaughter involved and all was well.......well apart from a few paint marks..... O0 O0
-
Thanks Bob, Tony and Phil for your support :-))
Phil if had to stay out of my workshop for 2 months I’d would have gone ;D >>:-( its bad enough having to keep out over the last few weeks.
-
Dave,
If you ever want a chat you have my nunber, don't be shy.
Bob
-
Thanks for that Bob, :-)) :-))
-
Gents Hi,I asked today if my wife could take some photos of my Type 26 hull as supplied by John at Scalewarships. It was then put back in to the workshop and locked away (and She has the Key)until my knee is fixed.
-
I'm pleased to hear that you had your op David. I wish you a speedy return to the modelling cave and some fun. Obviously I hope the trip to Disneyland will go ahead and your Grandchildren will have the time of their lives.
-
Hi Ian,
Thanks you for your post, yes we are all hopping I can get fit for the holiday.
-
Hi Gents,
I’m back, my knee I’ve been told will take 6 to 9 months of physio rehab to get back to full use, but can get back to working in the workshop know, but can’t drive for another 4 weeks.
So today I start on making HMS Belfast stand, this will keep the hull level and square, which will allow me to trim the sides down. The base still requires trim to size and a protect water proof coating.
I’ve also ordered a couple o meters of 12mm brass tube and 12mm bronze round bar so I’ll have all the material to make the prop shaft , “A” bearing and frames. As for the shafts I have stock of 4,5,&8 mm 316 SS rod.
Once I’ve confirmed the size I’ll use which SS rod is the best.
-
HI Dave glad to hear you are on the mend after your op an hope you all get to disney ok an have a nice time an you take it easy my freind an im gettin worried as its only 9 days to go for tigers launch oh i'll be brickin it with worry an i only hope i can get her an all the s/s in the car so on the sat before the day i will be tryin it all out how best to get everthing in the car an a freind who was comin to vid her to put on utube died about 2 wks ago very sad as he was not that old so another freind up the pond is goin to vid her for utube so just got to hope thing go ok on the day

Hi Chris,
We got back from Disney Sunday, just getting over the Jet lag, but we had a great time.
Sorry to hear about your friend. Wishing you all the luck with Tigers sea trails
For all a photo of the model stands supports that I use.
-
Started on the running gear and under water details. But as there are no drawings available I’ve use photos to try and get the info I require.
Anyway the photos are of the beginning of making the master fitting of the rudder which will be used to take a mould from, the master is made from laminating three 2mm plaster card the sanded to shape.
-
THANKS Dave an yes so sad about my freind but thats life isnt it an yes only a few days till sunday for tiger hope things go ok

Hi All,
Had to replace my lathe last week as the old one brunt out it speed control box, so went shopping at Axminster tools and got a new one at 20% off.
So to day I’ve started on the prop shafts and completed the stern tubes and plan to do the rest over the next few days.
-
It’s been a bit hot in the workshop, so I’ve been studying my photo library so I started on the “A” frame legs location, stern tube and rudders locations.
Need to give it a few days to recheck my assumption, before I make the cuts, as they say measure twice cut once in this case check, check, check and then check O0
-
LOOKIN GOOD Dave yes you got to be sure you are right before you cut as if its wrong can mean a heck of a lot more work
:-))
chrisb
-
I love buying tools :) It gives you an enormous feeling of well being (though the wallet can hate you!)
I look forward to more progress reports :-))
-
Hi Ian,
I can’t complain about having to replace the lathe as it’s give good service and I may have been a bit hard on it.
The wallet will recover :D
-
Update on my build so far,
I’ve started to frame the inside of the hull and installing the flight deck and an access. I’ve also being given some of ScaleWarship 3D printed prop type of stern mooring pods. I’ll fit them but may not use them on the final model.
-
HI Dave lookin good what type an voltage are the motors you have bought ? an this is 1/96 scale isnt it ?
chrisb
-
Hi Chris,
High Torque Mabuchi 555 DC Motor 9-30V purchased from Component shop.
Yes she is 1/96 scale length 1556mm x 220mm.
I’ll be running her on two 5000. mah NIMH 12v packs.
We have not finalised the final prop design, size, but it looks to be around 50-55mm dia five bladed.

HI Dave wow 55 mm props will they be the scimitar type an she should look good an cheers for motor info but will see what i can get at wings an wheels this week end an if no joy then i have components shop catalouge will have a look at 4 motors from them
cheers hope it isnt to hot where you are
chrisb
-
Photo showing the motor installed and the helicopter magnet track, which is installed under the flight deck and the hanger decking, this will allow the Merlin to move out of the hanger by a magnet and sail winch.
-
Quick update,
Started building the hanger and Mission bay. Detailing and layout is based on RN info currently available.
-
HI Dave she lookin very good work on her an have you bought your 55mm props yet ? as if you have i would love to see them as im still waiting for my 45mm props from prop shop
chrisb :-))
-
Hi Chris,
Thanks for your nice comments :-))
As for the props, no I’ve not ordered them as we don’t know what the actual design is ie blade shape, number of blades the only info we’re happy with is the dia.
The Major issue with this build is !! I’m building a model of the actual ship that is still be constructed and I’m having to wait for the RN to issue photos, info or if news agency publish build photos . Other than that I’ll have to make best assumptions, that later my require remaking.
But once it been sorted the I’ll post pictures.
Hope your props and revised motors help get Tiger working as you like :-)) :-))
-
cheers Dave for the info an hope you get all your info when the r/n have her in commishion regards props an such :-))
chrisb
-
Quick update.
Been working on the electrics. I’ve Completed the instal of the Forge Dist board and the main power loom. I still have to finish the radio loom. As for the electronics I’m awaiting delivery from ScaleWarship a Forge 8 way switch and a servo slow. Once I have these units , I can finalise the radio wiring and the wiring loom for the following,
Helio deck landing lights
Hanger and mission bay lights
Main radar
Nav lights
Bridge lighting
Setup the helio track sail winch.
-
HI Dave lookin very good layout an have you got treble 555 motors in an how big a magnet have you fittered in that tube to drag the chopper in an out of the hanger bay very good idea that an im still waiting for my bigger props for my tiger hope your knee is now better sir
All best to you an Andrea
:-)) chrisb
-
Hi Chris,
Thank I’m please with the track system, I’m looking at making the Merlin as there is no 1/96 or 1/100 scale kit available . I know the is a die cast 007 version, but that’s not an option at this time.
Yes the motors are 555, as for the magnets they are 10mm by 2mm 6kg strong.
Thanks for asking the knee is getting there. Hope your props arrive soon.
All the best to you and Jen
-
Is the die cast merlin the necessary scale, if so, could moulding it and creating a multi piece vacuform version be an option ?
-
The build it as they build it technique is an exciting way to go isn't it! That should give you plenty of time to look for references and know that they will become available rather than 'were available but got binned, burnt, bombed, drawn over or lost back in the mists of time.
-
Hi Warspite
The die cast Merlin is the Italeri 1/100 scale Sky fall model. I could take a mould off this model, however I would modify the model from a HC3 to the Navy version.
Anyway it’s an option.
-
Hi Ian,
I think your correct it would give me time to gain more updated info on the ship.
-
Hi Gents,
A couple of pics of progress to date.
-
HI Dave she's lookin good an that hole in the s/s is that where there will be a rib boat ? lookin forward to more pics sir
chrisb :-))
-
Hi Chris,
Thanks I’ve started on the Merlin build, As I can’t do much more on the S/S, as like your Tiger the internal workings, detailing has to be done before I put the hanger roof and the forward S/S there after I can then continue to build.
The large opening is for the mission bay the travers the beam of the ship.
-
Made a start on some of the missile units on the Type 26 using photos of units fitted to up graded Type 45s and Type 23s
The first phot is of the Sea Ceptor system which provides complete protection against all known and projected air targets. The weapon system is now in full-scale development for the UK MOD as the principal air defence capability for the Royal Navy’sType 23 and Type 26 frigates.
The second is the master fitting and the mould I made.
-
Wow, they look the part! They look really different to the VLS caps used on the other systems. I must use my resin moulding kit I bought a few months back for this sort of thing.
Keep up the excellent work :-)
-
Thanks Nick,
I fully understand your work stress, as I’d had the same before I was promoted to Srn CE.(All work no play at that time).
Here is the second of the missed systems, the MK41 VLS, this is the same system used on the Arleigh Burke. So as I’d had the mould from USS Roosevelt this was a quick build. I’ve at this time not taken a mould as there is only one of these on the Type 26s
-
HI Dave lookin very good them VLS hatches an what missles will be in there
chrisb
:-)
-
Hi Chris,
At this time based on Defence News BAE system have got in to bed with Lockheed Martin to use the MK41 system
“The British have yet to publicly specify the missile types to be deployed in the Mk 41, but the launcher system has the flexibility to simultaneously operate anti-surface, land-attack, anti-air and anti-submarine weapons.”
-
:-)) OK DAVE
CHRISB
-
Over the last few days started on the massive funnel on the Type 26, detailing will be added once more RN info, photos become advavlable.
-
Found some up to date photos of HMS Glasgow being fitted out. However looking closely at these, I’ve noted the standard RN water tight doors have been upgrade to a new format. So it looks like I will have to make new master Doors
-
Masters made and first mould taken.
-
Hi there Dave, I've been out of the loop for a number of months now, for various reasons, but I'm finally back onboard!
I just had a good read through your build to date and am amazed at how much you've achieved so far.
Intrigued now as regards to the w/t doors you mentioned.
Great work so far Dave.
Edit : I would assume the 'spin wheel' on the inside of the door is for faster dogging down?
Cheers!
Ray.
-
Hi Ray nice to hear you back :-))
As regards the doors it seem the old four, three panel type WT door are not being used on the T26, the new Type look to be flat and flush with the superstructure. I’m assuming this is to help with stealth ?? Standardising with other global customers or costs.
-
Thanks Dave and yeah, believe you are right about the doors and it all helps in getting the citadel secured in the event of an NBC attack :o
Aye,
Ray.
-
As over the last few days It’s been too hot to work in the workshop, however last night I used my two part Mk 45 gun mount mould and cast this off. As this is a hollow casting it allows me to do as I’d on my Arleigh Burke and have the gun barrel elevating.
-
You are doing some fine casting work there Chris! I like the two part turret mould. Do you use a pressure pot to keep pesky bubbles at bay? Also, how do you keep the core in place to ensure reasonable roof thickness, or does the core 'float' on the resin somewhat?
-
Hi Ian
It’s David not Chris, :} thanks for your interest and comments :-))
In answer to your question. I do use a de Gasing pump and chamber to remove any air from the RTV when making the mould.
I also use it to degas the resin.
The the core in this mould dose floats on the resin, but with other two part moulds I’ve used a wooden coffee stick attached to the core to hold it in place.
-
He I go again,
I’m looking in to having the hangar door working, this time I’m using some ripstock sandwich between 1mm plastic panels. The lower panel is made from brass with lead to add weight to add the door closing.
I’ve also made a start on the hangar internals, I’m basing this on RN info and I’m assuming as the type 26 will operate the Merlin I’m using the type 45 hangar detailing.
-
As you go can you keep posting on the opening doors, planning on doing hanger and rib doors on my t45
Cheers phil
-
:-))
This the first stage. I cut the panels depth to required size, but the length I cut 1mm over, this is so I could sand the sides so I got a good fit in the tracks.
I made a spacer so I got even spacing of Each of the panels.
-

Dave keep it up and that will be another working set of hangar doors as per 1/1. It took a lot of time and trials to get Phoebes working but well worth it
Bob
-
Thanks Rob,
I’d spent along time trying to get the door system on USS Roosevelt working ,only to find I should have started it at the start of the build. If I had I’d would have had resolved the issues out and had the space for the workings.
-
Well I’ve been working on the door movement, I’ve found I needed a guide track to make the operation smooth.
The main issues I need to resolve is getting the guide track centred, adjust its angle and making it removable as I will have too have the hangar roof removable for maintenance access. So I’m unable to lock the guide track in place until that’s sorted.

Hi Chris,
Hope you and Jen are well.
I’m using a servo and a servo morph to allow me to control the speed and range of movement.

Hope you and Jen are well.
I’m using a servo and a servo morph to allow me to control the speed and range of movement.
OH i see Dave but will you get enough throw on the servo to open an close the hager door ?
chrisb
-
Yes, as if required I’ll extend the servo arm. I’ve made shore the door slides in the tracks with very little drag. The channel I’m using is one of the toggle switch when operated I’ll have full servo movement both ways.
Once I’m happy with it I’ll post a video.

-
Sorry Dave! I got mixed up :(( Is that the Vevor degassing set? I was toying with getting that a while back. I bought a pressure pot first.
Your hangar door system looks the business! By chance I was playing little Lego with my nephew the other day and found the parts to make a garage door. It is limited by the width of the plastic parts but it works very well. It has no automation as it is just a toy, but it could be modified. I am not suggesting you replace your system as it is spot on and probably the most advanced I have seen made.
-
Hi Ian,
That’s OK :-)) Thanks for your comment it’s appreciated ok2 yes it is the Vevor degassing unit.
The Lego garage door look interesting, I’d never thought about Lego, the track element looks as it could be use full.

WHATS that in ole money dave ?

Anyone capable of 3d drawing could copy the principle and print to any dimension and adjust the shape of the runners to suit model warships.
I strongly suggest no one wakes the LEGO dragon by trying to sell them unless the design is based on a non copyright design principle? It looks like a simpler form that roller doors use......
-
Same sort of principle as the roller door on my Leander except bigger panels
Bob
-
Too right Ian the Lego dragon would be jumping on anyone coping there design >>:-(
I’m currently looking at a slight mod to my design in that I need to have a curved section joining the two straight brass track section.
-
Gents,
Hangar door working, just need to fab up two curved section of track to stop the door sticking.

Not a lot being published about the Type 26, with info limited I’ve spent hours trawling the net for any info.
All that I’ve found is a bit about the Sea Ceptor aft missile system, this is what I’ve built using this info, however as for access doors or ladders fitted on the unit I’ll have to await to see if there is any photos published in the future.

HI Dave what are these sea Ceptors used for defence of the ship or for offence to destroy a target ? as i know this is still all new stuff
chrisb
-
Chris,
It’s the New defence system that replaces the Sea Wolf on Type 26 Frigates , Type 45 Destroyers and Will be installed on the new type 26 Frigates
Sea Ceptor is said to be able to deal with multiple targets at the same time, protecting an area of around 500 square miles over land or sea.

That’s fine Chris,
Update;
I’ve been running test and checks on Belfast wiring, all ok.
I’ve also started on detailing the hangar roof and plan to install the hangar LEDs.
I’m not too happy with the Sea Ceptor casting so will remove them and cast off new.
-
Update,
Just finished off the Hangar roof detailing and LEDs.

BRILLIANT WORK Dave can we see it mounted on the hanger an lit up ?
chrisb

Thanks Chris,
Yes once I’ve detailed the hangar sides internal . :-))

excellent work rather jealousphil
-
Thanks Phillk,
How’s your T45 going?
-
Thanks Phillk,
How’s your T45 going?
hull is with matt beck of becksmodelmarine who is going to give it a coat of fibreglass and smarten it up. Im working on the superstructure at present in between building a large patrol boat and modifying a lesro airboat to ducted fan. Presently working on a working rib bay with launcher and detailing the hanger.phil
-
Hi Phill,
Sounds like some major work to be done with the T45.
Since my last update I’ve bit the bullet and started on the main mast and bridge section. The mast on the T45 seemed big to me but the T26 are massive.
Any way this does give an advantage by having such a large mast, means installing Radar motors and Nav lights is going to be a breeze.
-
Some photos of the mast and bridge section, now just need to make good any joints that show and wait more info so I can detail it.
-
Really neat work as always David, steady hands and sharp blades... and ability of course ;D
Cheers,
Ray.
-
Thanks Ray :-)) I’m pleased with the build to date.
-
So you should be! That Bridge and mast is crisp work. I like to see well formed corners, or at least filled and blended ones. Those angles look fun to recreate!
The hangar roof is top notch as well with all the door mechanism showing.
Nice 8)
-
Thanks Ian, :-)) :-))
I try to build as tight joints as possible, helps with filling and painting.
I thought USS Roosevelt forward super structure was full of corners but this has more. I’ve still got the after funnel and aft mast super structure.
-
Progress update
-
Thought you may like to see what I’ve currently been working on, detailing the Boat Bay
-
HI Dave nice work indeed she's lookin good but im confused as will she sail as it looks like to me she is goin to be mounted on a stand ?
chrisb :-)) :embarrassed:
-
It goes to show that just because new fangled warships are all smooth and anglier on the outside, they are still bristling with equipment on the inside.
Chris.
I have seen a few models that can sail which also have a natty stand for display at model shows and at home on the mantelpiece!

Hi Chris,
Thanks, yes she a working model. The stand is my normal method of stand, which has two usage one being for transport and the other show display.
Photos, showing how the stand works, the two pins fit into tubing that’s fitted in the hull and caps off to make them water tight
-
Hi Ian,
Yes modern warships are all moving to stealth design. What I like about this ship is the mission bay and hanger. It gives me room to do a lot of detailing.
Yes the stand is for shows and easy transport.

Good oh! Someone on Mayhem was really working hard on making opening boat hatches and derricks as well as other systems. I think it may have been the Late Andy (Taranis)
-
Ian,
Do you know which thread this was in ? as it may be worth having at look to see if there’s any info that could be useful.

I recall it having a D style hull? I will have a look.....

Thanks Ian,
Very good starting point for my Mission bay doors :-)) :-)) :-))

Good oh! I knew someone in Mayhem land had done some serious experimenting on doors and systems. Brian used to live in Spain. I hope he's alright after COVID.
-
Hi All,
I’m planning on finishing the BoatBay detailing and the main wiring loom for Belfast, (photos later this month) after which, she’ll be put on hold until I can collect more info.
In the mean time I’ll restart back on the Oliver Hazard Peary project that I put on hold for this build.
-
We'll be about when you return to Belfast! In the mean time I hope you get lots done to your Peary project.
-
So frustrated, >>:-( >>:-( took the dust cover off yesterday just to find the hanger door panels had warped. It looks as the glue I used has reacted with the plastic/ sail cloths.
So remade the door all in brass strip and used a different glue.
The new photos of the Type 26 just show the ship covered in scaffolding and sheeted in, so not any good for model making.

Quick Update Gents,
After hours on the net I’ve found some actual build, fitting out photos/info on the Type 26s, so I’m going to start correcting parts of the superstructure I’ve built that was based on early pre production info which has been found to be incorrect.
Two steps forward one step back <:(
The photos attached is one of the A/C ducting and fire drencher which is fitted in the hanger.

Progress on hanger internals

With the weather looking warmer this week, I’m going to try and see if I paint the hull.
Also correct some of the hanger fittings I messed up. {:-{

Had some good weather so took the chance to paint the hull.
I’ve still got to paint the transom which I’ll do once I’ve got the info as to size , shape of the stern trim tab.

HI Dave she's lookin very good as i like this ship a lot better than the type 45 as yours has a bit more detail on it an yes i know its a steath ship but this one to me looks quite a lot better shape an good to see she's got painted keep it comin on the build sir looks great how big is she ? lenght an beam ?
ATB SIR
chrisb
-
Hi Chris
Thanks
The model size is 61 1/2 inches Beam 9 inches. Very similar to the Arliegh Burke.
The Type 26 has a massive helicopter flight deck and with the mission bay the model has a lot of potential for detailing and working items.
I’ve attached just one of the configuration options.
-
Restarted wiring all the working functions, just awaiting some 0.5 mm LEDs to arrive from Micro Miniature these will be fitted to the main mast
-
That is an impressive hangar capacity as the Merlin is no Wasp! It looks like there is sufficient room to work on one without banging elbows etc!
-
HI Ian,
Attached is the options that the T26 could be configured for.
-
As apart of the wiring, I needed to mark out the helicopter tie downs, harpoon grid and deck landing lights locations
-
Blimey I have worked on west end shows with less wiring.....super congratulations :-))
-
Thanks SteamboatPhil
There is more wiring to be added to the looms, once I’ve confirmed the deck landing light type and locations.
-
Finished off the helicopter tie downs, also cast the bollards from an existing mould.
As for the fairleads I made a new master and moulded, as there is only two for closed fairleads visible on the Type 26 . I've not shown how I made the master closed Fairleads as this method was covered in USS Roosevelt thread.
-
Hi All,
After a lot of trawling the web for info on the T 26, I’ve found that AGI have got the contract for installing the Visual Helio landing Aid.
The issue I have now is how to install the lighting on my model.
Photo attached is from AGI publication.
-
hi dave just been lookin through your build here an i see a sail whinch is that to haul the chopper in an out of the hanger ? looks brilliant build sir
chrisb
-
Yes Chris the sail winch is used for hauling in/out the helio
Thanks 👍👍
-
Hi Gent
Update but slow and Little progress. Now I've painted the flight deck I can start work on the deck lighting and the best way for the removable section lights can be done.
-
Another part made and to be fitted.
-
Next little bits inpro the bridge consoles, which I’ve based on BAE System 3D images.
-
Consoles paint and ready to be fitted
-
Gents,
Just received these fantastic props from Keith Bender Props (USA) he has excelled yet again.

Dave, see Glasgow has now got her 5” gun fittedd.

-
Hi Bob,
I’ve not seen any pic as yet. I’m hoping she will be coming out of dry dock soon.
-
Navy news has her in the water
Bob
-
loving the build so far, looking forward for more!
-
Hi Bob,
I’ll have to have a look, the last update I’d seen was she was still in dry dock at Scotstoun for fitting out. Photo attached was date 14/04/2024 it also state she was 65% complete.
-
Thank Andyn.
Thought people may be getting board with this thread as there has been little movement and it’s slow.
-
Not bored Dave.

never bored dave, good to see how you handle issues

How could we get bored with a superbly detailed build? %) ....and those props look super menacing O0 ............Derek
-
Not really my thing but Ii am addicted to this thread, such patience, and I will keep following :-))
-
Thanks Gents, for the feed back. I’ll be a bit quiet as the wife and I have contracted covid 19 and felling crap. I think we got it when we picked up family from Gatwick last week.
-
Hi All,
Still awaiting new pics of HMS Glasgow coming out of fitting out dry dock & HMS Cardiff moving to the fitting out dry dock. When this happens I’m hope there will be a lot more pics.
So I’m turning to building the mission bay bridge crane which RR are supplying. My build is going to be based on the attached photo.
-
Thanks for the diagram David! I reckon that if going for a working light system for the bad weather landing system then six small coloured LEDs in a styrene mounting shape could work. If the mount is let into the body of the hangar (and therefore thicker) this might give you room for connectors and even resistors perhaps in one unit keeping it tidy?
Lots of lovely work going on matey! Keep it up, the Navy seem to be putting out some useful refs now!!
-
Started on the Mission Bay handling system crane, still a bit of clean up required.
First photo is the traversing part the second is with the main tracks
-
Hi Ian,
Thanks for your ideas, they are as always very useful and give another line of thinking. Yes the T26 photos are starting to come out.
last weekend I had a model show at a local steam rally which I took my T26. It alway amaze me who we get to visit the stands, I had a gent that visited the SCM stand and asked me about the T26, then he told me he was apart of the T26 & Aussie Hunter class, design team working on the mission bay and the main mast. But could not tell me to much 🙁
-
All most there, next will be to fit pulleys and motor
-
Worked out how to get the crane to work and how to fix it in the Mission bay. However the rubber band slips to much, so I’ve ordered some thin V drive belts. But they coming from US so I’ll have to wait.
I’ll going to use a servo motor linked to a servo morph for control.
-
HI Dave sorry i havnt looked in for a fair while but your type 26 is really lookin good an hope you both feel better now
chris :-))
-
At last HMS Cardiff has move to the barge, later it will be floated off to then be dry docked. Photos they have issued are most helpful, I can get a bit more done.
-
Hi all ,
After weeks of testing and remodelling I’ve finally got a working mission bay crane. The crane work's on the bench, however now I’ve got to get it working in the model. The thought at this time is to modify a servo and link it to a servo morph so I can limit the speed and travel.
The crane can be removed very easily for any mods, repairs, maintenance or any other reasons.
-
Hi Bob,
there is a lot more info/pictures out now of both 26s also have been sent the pic of Glasgow with her gun fitted.
-
HMS Cardiff passing RMS Queen Mary II in Greenock on her way up the Clyde. You can get an idea of the size of the T 26.
-
Gents,
I’ve started back on this project, however after studying the new photos and videos of HMS Cardiff and HMS Glasgow, it’s has shown quite a few of parts made to date are incorrect. But only one item is a major change and that is the bow brake water was made way too high. So I’m having to remove it and make a new one, which will also require the foredeck to be repainted. Im going to have to correct all the other minor parts before continuing.
However the flight deck tie downs, grill and bollards do not require any changes.
-
New Brake water made you can see the size difference , just awaiting other parts that I need to change then I’ll do a batch paint and refit.
-
Working on the transom, first photo is actual ship that i thought was the completed transom.
Second is the actual transom.
Third is the model.
-
WELL Done dave lookin very good an ive posted some pics on my plane build in a fair size meduim

Been Web surfing to collect data on the Artisan radar. This is my first attempt to make a master for moulding. Just final sanding to remove blemish before taking a mould.
-
Hi All,
not been doing much modelling, but as i was asked by a friend if i could make an Artisan Radar for his Type 23. So I got on and cast off two one for him and the other has been fitted to the T26.
https://youtu.be/h4_q4PUAPB0 (https://youtu.be/h4_q4PUAPB0)
-
Hi All,
As I did some casting this week, so I thought I’d cast off another Merlin. This version will be a Royal Navy Marines HC3 and will be a motorised option for when the T26 is doing relief operations.
-
Hi, All
Ive been modifying and adding detail to the casting of the Merlin. I’ve modified it to be a HC 4A. Next parts to be made is the FLIR, under carriage and rotor blades.
-
Wow! You are getting on well with this project Dave! I really like the boat handling system and hope it works perfectly on the model.
I like the Merlin loads. At one time you would have had a fair market designing and casting aircraft for people building carriers and 'modern' escort vessels but suppose we can print them off now.
-
Hi Iain,
Nice to see you active O0 I’ve still got a lot of technical issues to resolve but as ever I’m hopeful to get them sorted.
Even though there is a lot more photos of the two Type 26 there is still a lot info & detailing missing.
The Merlin master is from a plastic kit my Cornish step mum got me back in the 80s/90s when she was on holiday in Asia. I’ve searched the web for years to fine the kit and maker but no luck :(( :(( :(( difficult as I don’t have the makers name, box or plan any more. <:( . So taking a mould for casting was very risky and it did not do the master a lot of good.
As she’s no longer with us I can’t ask her about it.
-
Well, been a bit quiet with this build, so I’ve started to look at sorting out the hanger door movement. I was not to happy when to door was closing seemed get snagged. After hours trying bend a 3.2mm brass “U” section without twisting, a friend said he would resin print two tracks with the correct curve. After two attempts we go the correct curve. At this time I’m dismantling the original tracks and modifying the mountings.
Photo is just to show the new tracks, I’ll post more once I’ve install and tested the new tracks.
-
Old hanger door tracking has been removed and the new track has been installed. Also I’ve modified how the tracking is secured which will allow it to be easily removed for repair/maintenance.
The door is now opening and closing perfectly. :-))
-
Hi All,
Just coupled up the electric to test my modifications to the hanger door. As I’ve change the transmitter channel which I was using for the hanger door function It now needs to tie in a servo slow, as its operating way too fast.
https://youtu.be/pVL4pVRZVmg?si=Mz9F1OgI1C9qi6cU (https://youtu.be/pVL4pVRZVmg?si=Mz9F1OgI1C9qi6cU)
-
%% %% %% Does need a servo slow Dave
How are you going to represent the glazed areas on the resin Merlin
Merry Christmas
Bob
-
Hi Rob,
I’ve put my order in for a servo slow, once it arrives I’ll fit and post a new video. The reason I changed the channel over was due to I needed the other channel for the mission bay door & crane function. But I’m please the hanger door works smoothly in the new tracks.
I’ve also been working on the LEDs wiring for the heli deck, again when I’m happy with the LEDs I’ll post pics.
Last week I ordered some brass worm gears for the mission bay crane. Know I’ve worked out and got a method sorted to drive the crane in and out
Happy Christmas and New Year to you and your family.🎅
-
Hi Rob,
Sorry I did not answer your question re windows, I’ll paint them in
-
Hi Gents,
After spending some time installing the Mission bay crane, I’ve had to do a major change to the drive method. The pulley and belt drive worked fine on the test bench, however once installed the belts kept slipping as a result of using the crane to push the bay doors open. Many adjustments to the pulleys, belt and doors I could not stop the slipping. So I’ve change to a lead screw system, this works by using a 2mm threaded servo push rod with a brass worm and gear wheel. I still need to do some more testing to get the correct speed and the opening of the bay doors along with the motor mounting.
-
Now that's a bit of Propper Ingineerin :-))
Regards Ian
-
Certainly, having the transmission connection of the long threaded rod fixed in two points should eliminate any tendency to warp or twist due to load or torque resistance
So all of this should make a very smooth hanger segmented roller door opening & closing :-)) .....and at literally any speed of scale operation you choose O0
Derek
-
Hi Ian,
Thanks this model has coursed me a lot of head scratching around the working functions, but so far it’s been enjoyable.
-
Hi Derek,
The hanger door I’m still awaiting delivery of a servo slow.
I’m please with the crane drive, and yes having it supported I’m hoping it will reduce/ stop any warping or vibration.
-
Incredible miniature engineering what an amazing build :-))
-
Thanks Mark I’m pleased your enjoying my build, all be it very slow👍
-
Hi All
I've now installed the Mission bay Crane and temporary mounted the motor. Ive still got to have the electronic control built, this will allow the crane to travel to the door opening and automatically stop.

Just received these LEDs dist board which I’ll use for the heli deck landing lights as each landing light housing has two LEDs and there are 8 light housing.
-
Can I ask where you got the dis boards from ?
Cheers
-
Hi Phill,
They are prototypes from Scalewarships
-
LED bus board installed just need to make and instal the LEDs and lighting housing
-
Hi David, that's a very neat looking electronics installation you've done so far -I like it a lot and thanks for the update.
Cheers,
Ray.
-
Thanks Ray
I’ll end up having 16 LEDs for the heli deck landing lights plus another 12 for the landing aids lights.
A friend of mine is working on the mission bay crane control electronics as how I had its function working failed, <:( so he said he’d look at it.
-
Hi,
I’ve just been told by Scalewarships the LED Bus board will be soon available on there web site
-
Many thanks II will keep a look out, as I need 2 (diss boards that is chaps) :-))
-
Picked up these today from a friend that has just got a resin printer. The larger heli deck lights will go down the side of the flight deck, the smaller ones on the transom.
-
Housing after two coats of Matt black Thai is to stop light leak and one top coat once fully dried I’ll give them a light sand and final top coat.
Then the housing will have green lenses added, this will be done by painting green acrylic clear on some acetate.
-
Hi, Any chance of showing/telling me what eletric components you have used in the picture, cheers :o
-
Hi Detomo,
The item mark in
Yellow ………..is two 12 way LED bus bar
Blue ……………is a 12v distribution board.
Green …………is a 8 way switching unit
All these electronic were purchased from Scalewarships
Hope this helps
-
Flight deck landing lights installed today, but had to order some more as I miss counted {:-{
-
Easily done. I built a huge tug and miscounted the railings – couldn't tell the difference between 2 and 3. Doh!
-
My UK supplier is out of stock, so I’ve had to order from China >>:-( the issue is they will not be delivered until Feb 10th.
-
Progress pics
Lots and lots to still do.
-
Cheers for the photo, it has helped me a lot on my set up . :-))
-
Completed all the wiring in the hull today. Every cable has its own cable ident this is to help track the cables when any repairs are required
I still have two spare ways on the 8way switcher and spare ways on the LED bus bars. Just need to move on to coupling up the superstructure electronics to the hull electronics.
-
Very impressive cable work David, all very neat indeed :-)
Cheers,
Ray.
-
Thanks Ray,
Just now got to do the superstructure, but there is not a lot of info coming out at this time.
-
Nice work Dave, you might even think an engineer fitted her out!!
Bob

{-) O0 O0 {-)
Thanks Bob,

Well Gents,
After spending time reviewing all the photos I decided too strip off all fittings apart from RAS fittings.
I incorrectly built the walkway as solid but it is meshed, doors incorrect locations and what I thought as weather strips above the doors are not incorrect. Two step forward one back.🤬
-
Just a quick update on the funnel rebuild.
-
Got a bit of new info re the RAS post so I’ve got to modify my first assumptions
-
Been doing some fittings casting, but could not find my Phalanx CIWS mould I made when building USS Roosevelt , so I’ve had to make a new mould from the masters.
-
This week I cast off from the new Phalanx’s mould and the old 30mm gun mould.
Once they have been painted up I’ll post a pic.
-
Its surprising how the steps forward and backwards are just as common for ships that were built over the last 150 years as for a ship the navy are still having built! The pages of this fine forum are filled with examples of differences and alterations made because references turned out to be odd or different.
You have done a lovely job on the various mechanisms David. The mission bay system especially deserves mention!
-
Hi Ian,
Thanks for your positive reply, I never built a model so far ahead of the real prototype. Yes the reworking items is a pain but still fun collating info.
I’m hoping that the BAE Builders will be doing sea trials during the fourth quarter of this year so more pics.🙏
-
HI Dave im back on site thank goodness so i can reply to your build an its lookin good now goin to look through what you have done since i was last on here :-))

HI Dave me againis there a vid on seein your chopper bein pulled in an out of the hangar bay ? as youe eletronics looks a nice set up an very neat compared to mine in my TIGER an im now doin a service an mot lol on her as she hasnt been powerd up for 6 months as ive for a change been build plastic aircraft kits big ones in 1/32 scale an lightin them up with 2mm smd led but now ive managed to get back on here i may do a ship again as i really liked the type 22 batch 3 like HMS CHATAM or a type 42 like hms manchester

Hi Chris,
Re the helicopter tracking in/out I’ve not done one as yet, I’m still adjusting the cables. I’ve also been doing some 1/48 scale kits just as a fill in whilst info comes out on the 26.
All the best to you and Jen.

HI Dave that planx looks really good as the last time i made one it was for my HMS EDINBURGH D97 IN 1/64 SCALE

-
Hi All,
Been working on the removable side guards, using T45 data. Also in the process of doing corrections on doors and signal walkway platform.
I’ll post pics when done.
-
The Phalanx always looks so sci-fi! Lovely cast matey.
-
Thanks Ian,
All
I’ve got to the stage were until the actual T26 starts sea trails hopefully forth quarter this year. I’m going to put this build on hold as I’m finding so many changes in the base design of my model, which I will have to make several major modifications to the build. It’s just not enjoyable or good to keep taking large section of the model apart and rebuild, so I’m going await until the actual ship is at sea or in service.
:(( {:-{ <:( <:(
-
Hi All,
Been soaking up all the pics and video of HMS Glasgow naming. I’ve got a lot of good info, however the down side is this means I’ve got quite a few corrections.
One of the good info pics is how and were the 30mm gun guard nets are located, mounted and spacing.
-
FYI,
Having ago at making the net frame
-
For the safety net around the 30mm guns I would normally make the frames from copper wire and the nets from net curtain.
But this time as I’ve made the frames from evergreen section I needed the net to give more strength to the frames. So I order from scale link some 0.75 x 0.75 brass square mesh. This was given a light sanding with wet and dry to remove any contaminants. Then I used TAMIYA metal primer and then spray it with white paint.
As this has worked well I’ll be using this method for the flight deck safety netting.

Hi,
We of the South Coast Modellers showed at HMS Collingwood open day and field gun day on Saturday, so I thought I’d take my Type 26 see what comments info I could get.
I had lots of comments from RN personal that have been or will be assigned to HMS Glasgow, overall feed back regarding my Belfast was positive.
