Hi everyone
I bought this model a few years back from my friend Klunk who was selling it on behalf of an ex-Navy chap who had the model stored but unfortunately wasn’t able to finish it. It’s something to behold, I love the Hood- she was a stunningly beautiful ship for her era and the workmanship is incredible. The entire superstructure is made either from brass, copper, or aluminium depending on the area. As Klunk pointed out, the original modeller even made voice pipes which is rarely modelled especially in smaller scales! I’ve managed to get some fresh strip wood for the decks, bought some etched brass stanchions, and now looking at ships boats. Hoping to collect everything together ready for Christmas leave. The original modeller made everything from scratch only leaving me the main mast to construct which luckily isn’t too difficult especially as he made the starfish platform so I have just the poles to play with!

Hi there Nick, that's some project you have on your hands :o
One of the pics shows the deck screwed down with, I'm guessing, brass screws. This would suggest it may be possible to fit her out as a working model, unless the plan is to mount the model for display only.
Either way, I'm sure you'll make a good go of it - hope all goes well for you :-)
Cheers,
Ray.

Hi Ray
It’s a beautifully made model, I hope to continue the same level of skill in completing her.
The model is a runner- she has all four prop shafts but currently no rudder fitted. Interestingly she has a homemade gearbox to allow a single motor or engine to move all four props either inwards or outwards depending on your point of view. The entire centre structure lifts off and the rear deck is screed on with the aforementioned brass screws.

Ah well, in that case, you've got yourself a real treasure O0
Aye,
Ray.

Amazing find. Hat's off to the original builder as well as to you for continuing the project. What scale is she, approximately?
-
Hi Akira
It’s 1/128 scale, when I bought the model there was a letter with it dated from 1965!

Hi everyone
Hoping to collect everything together ready for Christmas leave.
A great project Nick. She deserves to rise from the depths and there's only one question.........................Which Christmas? %)
-
You got me there Tony! :}
Hopefully this Christmas :-))
-
Hi Nick,
Hats off to you for taking this project on :-))

Hi T888
I am really looking forward to working on this model at Christmas. Got two and half weeks off over the festive period and should allow me to clean, repair, and complete a majority of the model.

%% Even in that scale she'll be 2 metres long! Is the hull a one piece or two piece? Also (Nerding out somewhat) which era is she built for? Will you be festooning her with Pompoms and twin 4.5s?
Another top project to watch out for :)

Hi Ian
She is over 6ft long and is a one piece hull but was built as a straight runner so I’ve got to add a rudder.
From my research and understanding the model is approx 1933-34- so she had the addition of the two 8 barrelled Pom Poms and there platform that sat on top of the shorter deck over the middle 5.5” gun.
The only issue I have is working out the number of ships boats and what they were as the Anatomy of the ship book conflicts with other sources over numbers and types. All part of the fun :-))

Would the boat complement have changed much from the 1920's the book British battleships of World War Two by Alan Raven and John Roberts(Arms and Armour Press) has a good line drawing showing the shelter deck and identifying all of the ships boats on it. Also has a good set of drawings and photos of all the ships involved at various dates.

As one of the only warships that didn't look like a multi-storey regatta, she could carry any assortment of boats. Did it depend on her captain what boats were carried or was it a standard complement at any given time dependant on admiralty decision?? If the former, it could differ regularly over the years especially if Hood had Captain who liked his sailing and rowing etc.

Interesting information regarding the AA fit for her as modelled by the way.

Hi Nick, another big in for you to do, looking forward to seeing the end result. Looking at her secondary, i would think this model predates her 32 refit. But apart from that I have found in a 1923 seamanship manual No 2 , a diagram for rigging the recovery of her paravians using the davit on the fore deck! But aside from all that I expect it will end up like your other models aka a museum job.
