Title: Noodle Tugs
Post by: JohnG on September 28, 2023, 11:47:29 pm

Over the summer I built a couple of ‘Noodle Tugs’ for the grandkids.
The inspiration was an article in the February 2018 issue of Model Boat magazine.
I substituted twin props rather than single prop plus rudder, and 3d printed the inner ‘box’ to contain the motors/electrics. Otherwise pretty much followed the build in the magazine.
The flat bow is deliberate – it means the tug can push things – including the other tug if necessary. It does however make it rather non-streamlined. I think they go slightly faster astern!
Anyway duly delivered, and 2 v engaged grandkids sailing them..  there was an idea to add the bridge windows together – but we just got too busy on the water so the bridge stayed plain for now!
There’s a video of the pool trial here

Love these, there’s a guy in our club who only builds more ‘out of the ordinary’ things and he’s built one of these, he regularly uses it to push 5’ 10kg+ boats around

yes they're running off 3*18650 lipo cells so 12 volts through the little motors from ebay - they move along nicely, though the motors do get a little warm. ..   i started planning on 4*aa's = 6v but then thought 'this could go faster'... as one does..
