Title: Flysky FS-i6 X. New member help request how to set up for twin shafts
Post by: David-S on February 04, 2024, 03:11:49 pm
New to RC boating and building a quadruple screw ship, using 2 outrider motors on the port coupled together via 2 x reversing ESC.  and the same set up on the starboard side and a single rudder servo.   In my picture I am only showing 1 port and 1 starboard motor.Having a nightmare with the RC setup as a novice.

Can anyone help with the setup of my system?

I fail to get any sane setup!   Have read so many posts generally re tank steering, Mixes 1-3 High offsets, motor speed matching, trimming and so forth but seem to be way of target with each attempt, sometimes no response mostly though motors run at ver high speeds and can not be slowed to a stop, (both gimbals are self centering)   sometimes random speeds in one direction but not reversing in most attempts.

What I would like to end up with is each stick to control just 1 motor each ahead, centre off and reversing,   another spare Chanel for the rudder,  on whatever stick works using side to side movement 9i actually managed to do this bit! more luck than knowledge.

The idea is to use the rudder when in open water with all shafts turning outwards then when  manoeuvring I would centre the rudder and use port and starboard propellers to turn the ship, just like in real life.

I set the transmitter to fixed wing aircraft and mode 2.

Can anyone help with the perfect newbies guide for absolute beginners?

So far over 150 hours 3D printing so many more hours of printing for the reset of the ship to be done yet, but it seems a good time to get the engineering sorted out!

All help will be much appreciated.

So is it an electrical problem? It seems so.
To best help you, others could do with photos of all your wiring, connected but switched off, & hyperlinks to what you have bought.

are bos ESC connected with all 3 wires (red black white) ? Should be only one of them.  (for one only black (-) and white (signal).

do you have a make and model # for those ESC?  without that info, there is no way to tell what is going on with them regarding calibration/setup.

They do feel like electric flight fw only controls not fw/rev marine units. Lack of branding means we cannot independently check how they are calibrated. So, as above, what make are they?

I recently returned a similar looking esc, it was advertised as reversible, but it wasn't. It later turned out that several others had the same issue. It should be easy to check, just connect one esc and motor etc, then if it's ok, great, and check the other one the same way.

Can't comment on the ESCs shown here but I do use the i6x for a twin screw model. I have it set up where the 'mix' of the motors follows what you are doing with the rudder. Not quite what you are after here but I find it a bit simpler... After having a bit of a headache myself setting the various mixes of the channels on the transmitter, I'd advise you don't try any of that until you have a simple set up of forward/neutral/reverse working on one motor. I found the set up of the mixes to be quite tricky and can make the whole set up behave weirdly until you have it correct.

I have a couple of twin screw models, one brushless and the other brushed, both are controlled by the same Flysky i6 (not at the same time, though!).

I experimented with transmitter mixes and now have left/right rudder on the horizontal axis of the right hand stick, throttle with both motors responding the same on the vertical axis of the left hand stick (simple forward/stop/reverse) and differential throttle on the horizontal axis of the left hand stick.

The differential has little effect on the model when it is moving at speed, but enables both models to pirouette on the spot, and makes docking a lot easier.

I can't remember exactly how I arrived at the final settings, but it works reliably and I simply copied the settings for the second model from the first. It didn't work very well to begin with, and then I realised that the motor steering and the rudder steering were working in opposition, I reversed the motors and now it works well.

Not sure if this answers any of your questions, but this Youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQGMdmUp09Y) explains and demonstrates channel mixing for tank steering.  I know it's on a plane, but the demonstration on the Flysky i6 is very clear.  I also was going to query the ESCs, but everyone else seems to have done that!

Most issues like this shouldn't take more than a few short answers to queries or requested photos to get to the root of the problem. So they could be solved with a stopwatch ticking.

This highlights number one.
Number two would be to point the camera to where the two escs join.

JoJoeElbe, the red is taped off. The poster isn't so new to RC.

What is the NUMBER ONE issue that you highlight with the picture?

To see postimg.org photos in the best resolution you have to tap or click on the thumbnail and do it again on the postimg page.

Question number one, needing an answer from C.D. (David-S) is does his highly compressed upload show channel 3 plug inserted back-to-back with Ch2 and the wrong way round?
Question number two is did he get this issue fully resolved?
If it is resolved then there are no further questions from me.

Ensure your ESCs are calibrated properly to avoid the high-speed issue. Then, tweak your transmitter settings to match your boat setup, adjusting throttle curves and endpoints.

Can't remember any of these problems with the REP Unitone, I did however construct a transistorised pulse unit to replace the button.  O0

I don't think a purchase link is ever going to appear from the opener.

Another Ebay pitfall to watch
Among correctly described cookie cutter Ebay listings for the same product, I stumbled on this: 40A ESC Brushed Speed Controller for RC Model Helicopter

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295530601817 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295530601817) with the photo revealing it is Brushless.
It's unlikely to be a dual mode (brushed & brushless) esc.
