Hi Martin,
To answer if I'm coming this year depends on which traders are going to be present.
Please supply a list of traders who are going to be trading.
Cheers
David

Wicksteed isn’t a trade show, though this year we are hoping to have a few there (Orion Mouldings and Dean’s have confirmed so far, with a few others in talks). It’s the largest dedicated model boat show in the world, which is focussed on sailing on the lake :-))

Come to the largest dedicated model boat show in the world returns for its 26th year!

                                                        25-26th May 2024

Hosted at Wicksteed park, Kettering, the show offers free sailing from dawn to night, camping on site,
refreshments and ample room to pitch your own gazebo.

Starting at loam Saturday and running to 4pm Sunday, we cater for all aspects of the hobby, powered or unpowered.
( IC demos will be held twice daily by the Stevenage Model Boat Club, no other IC boats will be permitted. )

The event is free, but the park charges for parking at £7.50 a day. Due to the massive expansion of last year's show,
we have negotiated use of the amphitheatre area for additional stalls, which will feature the Mayhem tent, refreshments,
RNLI, huge bring & buy and the Wicksteed Model Boat Club.

Follow the Modelboatmayhem facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/ModelBoatMayhem (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ModelBoatMayhem) ) page
or visit modelboatmayhem.co.uk (http://modelboatmayhem.co.uk) for further updates, pictures from previous years shows and news.

Hi - I am planning to attend one day again this year (not sure which yet) from the Woodspring Model Sailing Club in North Somerset and I'll bring some models.  I will see if I can persuade some other club members to come along too.

Camping will be confirmed in due course, we’re still waiting for the park management to confirm what rates we can have.

What I can say for sure is that the show is free and you can arrive and leave whenever you want to :-))

Yep, finally got on camping website, booking is better this year as it's now done by nights, not days!
It will ask which field you want to be in, but all the pics are the same, with no map or guide!
I'm still deciding what to take to sail, maybe Robbe Atlantis, and Hms Intrepid. Lots of boats up for sale, including a Maggie M part started.

I’ll have a look but we are usually in main campsite field closest to the model boat lake. They have only just reactivated the booking form and it’s different from the last time. Is it asking for names or locations from any drop down menu?

Ok brief update.
If camping, you can only book online.
Input your arrival date and leaving date, and it will work out your nights.
We will be camping in field 1.
Don't forget to add your car reg, as parking is included in camping price.

Some frequently asked questions about the show below:

Where is the show and what are the times?

Wicksteed Park, Kettering, NN156NJ. The show opens officially at 10am both days, and runs to 4pm Sunday. There is no restrictions on night sailing.

How much does the show cost?

The show is free!
The park will charge you for parking, which is £7.50 per day. Please ensure this is paid before midnight of the day you visit, or the park will issue a fine. Disabled parking will be closest to the lake.

How many people will there be at the show?

We draw a crowd of at least 200 boaters round the lake at any given time, weather dependant. With the park being a public place, total numbers are in the thousands.

Are there refreshments and toilets available?

There is a refreshments tent on the amphitheatre with tea and coffee, burgers and baps will be available from the Wicksteed club. Toilets are in the nearest building to the lake. There are also several cafes in the park.

Where do I park?

The parking for the show will be clearly signposted and marshals will be guiding you where to park. The car park is roughly a 100yd walk to the lake, there are a couple of trollies available for carrying boats but these do get heavily used so there may be a wait to use them.

Can I bring my Internal Combustion engine powered boat?

Sorry, but strictly NO IC powered craft are allowed at Wicksteed Park, other than those which have been pre approved by Andy Nightingale for use in the IC demonstrations. They’re more than welcome to be displayed on tables, but they cannot be run on the water.

What about fast electrics?

FE boats are welcome, however the owner should bear in mind that it is a very small lake, there will be around 20 other boats on the water at any given time and the lake will be completely surrounded by members of the public throughout the day. Anyone who is seen to be driving a fast boat dangerously towards the safety of the public or other boats will be asked to remove it from the water.

Is onsite camping available?

Yes, this is done through the park’s website – we have no control over this. We will be camping in field 1 in a fenced off area clearly labelled with the Mayhem logo. There is a toilet / shower block very close to our pitch, but unfortunately no electrical hookup. Evening shenanigans will involve a barbecue and a couple of small alcoholic beverages…

How does the bring & buy work?

See one of the Luton club members running the stall.
We will need your name, phone number and prices for each item.
A fee will apply of £1 per boat, funds going towards running the show and a donation to the Wicksteed club.
( Bring & Buy is cash only but there is an ATM at the visitor centre. )

What’s the deal for Model Boat Clubs?

I highly recommend bringing a gazebo, tables, chairs and some promotional materials for your club (leaflets, banners etc). It is advisable to arrive between 8-9am on Saturday to set up as things will get extremely busy after this time. Clubs are welcome to arrive on Friday afternoon to set up gazebos etc.

What if I’m not visiting as part of a club?

No problem! We have permanent picnic benches lakeside which will be covered by a marquee for general use by those not in a club.

Do I have to stay the full day?

No! Arrive and depart whenever you wish.

Will there be any themed parts of the day?

We will be holding club 500 races, tugboat games, yacht races, a parade of naval vessels, lifeboats, an IC demonstration twice daily and a straight running competition. Times will be announced on the day and events will be subject to numbers interested.

Will there be traders present?

We have always tried to focus Mayhem on sailing on the water, rather than it becoming a trade show. There will be some traders on the amphitheatre, next to the bring & buy.

What if my boat sinks?

Any unplanned voyages to the bottom of the sea should be reported to either Phil or Andy on the Stevenage Model Boat Club stand, look for the giant Zip Tie Racing flag. Do not enter the lake yourself to retrieve models.

Is the event suitable for families with children?

Absolutely! We want to encourage as many people of all ages to come along. The show is an excellent way of bringing new people to the hobby.

What if I don’t have a boat?

You are still more than welcome to join us. It is worth noting, however, that the park does not allow any other forms of radio controlled vehicle, so no flying or cars.

Can I make a donation towards costs of running the show?

If you feel you’d like to, please do – the five of us run this completely out of our own pockets. Donations can be made via the bring & buy stall or the tea tent.

Good news!

Last year the stickers were incredibly popular, these will once again be available for sale in the tea tent, all proceeds going to Martin to go towards running the site

They’ll be £2 each and are 90mm across

Just a quick reminder of this as it was in the other thread.

Due to the continued massive growth of the show, we've decided this year that we shall be reserving some spaces around the lake for various clubs, please see the map below. Also new for this year, we'll be erecting a marquee over the permanant benches, which we'll be keeping clear for those who do not have a gazebo or need space to set up if not staying for the full duration. There is plenty of room for everyone, and not reserving a space won't mean that you won't have somewhere to pitch up, but if you feel you'd like to reserve a spot for yourself or your club please contact me through PM or email.

Adding to Andys note, Nick has just informed us that some areas around the lake might have to be cordoned of, unless you want to re-enact the Somme. Personally,  I'm up for that!

I forgot how wet Mayhem 1 was!
You’ll be pleased to know that it isn’t as bad as that just advisory that one area isn’t ideal for pitching at the moment-
The area on the map recently posted you can see a blue gazebo next to a tree between numbers 3 and 2. We are putting down pea gravel to make it traversable, fingers crossed that the predicted dryer warmer weather will dry it up further but we thought it would be made advisable not to pitch in that area for the moment. Plenty of pitches around the lake and the amphitheater are still okay to use.

It's in my garage Phil but it is recommended for paint although it might work on dentures - always worth a try.

Regrettably, while I'd love to attend Mayhem the loss of one eye makes the journey problematical. The other one works OK but having to do the work of two means that longer drives cause eyestrain which restricts distances and comfort. Plus my knees no longer function the way they are supposed to...

If so can anyone sign up on the day?

I’m in charge of lake activities and to me a yacht is something that the owner forgot to fit an engine in, so it’ll be a free for all. The lake poses enough challenges without me trying to figure out the differences between sailing boats  ;)

We’ll work out a course and rules on the day

Hi Martin, Nick, Phil, Klunk and all the jolly Mayhemers ....... I hope you have great weekend. I've just checked the Met Office detailed forecast for Kettering area and if the sailing gods view you kindly then you may escape with just a few showers. You don't need a return of the gazebo flying championships of a few years ago. Chuck a sausage on the bbq and enjoy a tinnie on my behalf.
Look forward to meeting up with you all again at some point. I miss all our banter at the International.
I'm eyeing up the next event at Old Warden in July. I would love to come down and see you all again.
Have a good one,
Very best wishes

We came over to Wickstead this afternoon and saw and wondered at the magnificence of it all. A truly great display of our hobby, well done everyone.

I mentioned to Ron Dean that he was the leader in the 'Longest Transmitter Aerial' class as he was the only person on the lake NOT using a 2.5 Ghz set!  :-)   But as he was sailing the truly magnificent Blue Leopard' it was understandable.

That gave rise to the thought that such a wonderful display would have been almost impossible in earlier days as we'd have been limited to the number of available channels with 27 Mhz and 40 Mhz radio.

[Later] Well I did post a pic of the Blue Leopard to accompany this, but the site seemed to take exception and didn't print it.  >>:-(

I was a little damp early on, a couple of quick shows &  One Rumble of thunder, and that was it! Beautiful sunshine from about 11am onwards!

First of all as always, HUGE thank you to the Wicksteed Park Model Boat Club for patiently ( doggedly ) organising and arranging EVERYTHING!
Mention for dispatches:

Nick Brown ( and 16 Bars! )
Steve Brown
Phil ( SteamboatPhil - Generosity Abounds, always!))
Klunk ( he insists on that name & who are we to argue! )
Big Andy ( Lady Poppy , Richard & Stevenage MBC )
Ruth & Gina ( Tea & Coffee & Bacon rolls - always a mayhem favourite! )
Wicksteed Park Model Boat Club ( everyone )
Wicksteed MBC Café Ladies & Gentlemen ( sterling job! )
All the clubs that turned up!
All the individual boaters , some travelled really far!

EVERYONE that came up to me, shook my hand and smiled!

Probable Mayhems best weekend at Wicksteed ever!
( Some say 17 years,  but estimates rage from 16 to 18 years...! )
If not the best then certainly in my top 3... at one stage yesterday, just for a moment, we were nearly organised but then a butterfly
flapped its wings somewhere and the the normal happy chaos resumed.

As I say fantastic turn out yesterday, over 150 cars in the car park & early afternoon over 40, yes Forty boats on the water at the same time!   :o

More than a few were surprised I actually turned up with model boats this year, no, not a Club500 but a large Tugboat and a yellow submarine...
..  which won the ( premeditated ) awards for longest boat on the water, most endurable boat, most energy efficient of the weekend!... plus 6 x 686 Tugboats!
Other records broken this year: I didn't sink anything, sailed a J-class yacht, Dennis' Tarpen,  Nick didn't fall in ( to be verified ), Poppy's potato salad, record tea & coffee consumed.

Wasn't feeling to great yesterday but what a wonderful Weekend! ... Lets do it all again next year!

( Draft 3 -  to be updated when I is less tyred! )

well we had planned to come down this year but I for a change put a damper on that as they bought my spinal operation forward by a week so that spoilt our fwd planning so to speak never mind allways next year.

What a weekend!

The 'Mayhem Committee' (Martin, Nick, Phil, Pete and I) really are getting the hang of this running shows business %)

Thank you to everyone who came, to everyone behind the scenes and the Wicksteed club for having us

Highlight of the weekend had to be the 'tug 500' race round the harbour, everyone needs to get themselves a 686 tug!

Time for a very long lie down, then we'd better start planning next year!

Hi  thanks for the compliment of the length of my equipment, its the warm weather, Pics of my Blue Leopard, it is a long time since I sailed her so much, even gave the T X to Martin for some time on the water, had a job getting the T X back from him,  Great weekend, great weather and superb company Ron

I decided to pay for my parking via the RingGo app when I got home but the location 24888 doesn’t come up. Anyone else had problems paying online for parking?

Hi Angus

We weren’t aware that they had changed their app, hopefully you can see the QR code and use that to pay for parking.

I went on the Saturday, my second year after a taking an hiatus from model boating. This was Mayhem at its best!
It was brilliant it felt like I had gone back in time, to when I used to go regularly.

The weather was weird though it usually rains most of the time, must be that dodgy climate change stuff.  %% %% %% %%

Thanks to all the organisers for keeping this brilliant event going, and a big thanks to Martin for thinking about and setting it in motion back in 2007.

It was great to chat with everyone!

Next years date is in my diary.

Brian

Thirty years ago, I was going to model shows with a boat (usually my Deans Motor Gun Boat) all over the south of England, including Beale Park, Greenwich Maritime Museum, Brighton  and many more - I then lived abroad for 16 years and lost touch with things over here. Moved back 12 years ago and once settled, looked for the shows but most had disappeared. This weekend was the first time I've been able to take a boat along and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of being amongst fellow modellers.
Thank you to Martin & the Wicksteed club for bringing the magic back.
I've already made arrangements to be there for the whole weekend next year.

For a different view of the stands than usual, here’s a short video I took from the middle of the lake Saturday afternoon. Who can spot themselves?
