I help out at the National Lifeboat Collection in Chatham Dockyard in Kent, and I have access to and can photograph all the lifeboats in the collection. If anyone wants photos of any of these boats for modelling purposes please send a mail and I will see what I can do.

Doug, if you want to send me a pm in behalf of your friend, I have100+ pictures of the two Oakleys (mostly Will & Fanny Kirby) that I could burn on a CD and send him.
I'm trying to do this for all the boats to get a library of modelling details.

I know it's not on your list, but I'm trying to track down pictures of a Brede lifeboat - does anyone have any ideas where I can source some ? There was a very nice model at the Warwick model boat show ( :)) but shots of the original, especiall the interior would be welcomed for the model I plan to build.
Also, what was that Metcalf kit like to build ? I fancy doing one so I'm interested to knwo what you altered when you did it.

I do have contact details of the owner of the Brede that was on the Lifeboat Enthusiasts' Society stand at the Warwick show if that would be of any help. I have looked in the LES handbook and most of the Brede's went to South Africa. 33-03 was last reported as being a pilot boat at Braye Alderney in the Channel Islands and 33-05 was last known as being unaltered as a pleasure boat at Folkes yard Burseldon.

The police used to have a Brede down at Poole, on the same pier as the lifeboat - I don't know if they still have it. It wasn't an ex-lifeboat however, it was built especially for them.
The Metcalf Rother...where to start...

For a start, it's marketed as the Dungeness boat 'Alice Upjohn', however, this is one boat it isn't - as the forehatch is offset to the side on that one but on the model plans it's on the centre line - fine for some boats, but not the Alice Upjohn.

The white metal fittings aren't that great - I've still got a huge box of unused fittings, because I remade a lot of them. All the stanchions and cabin rail mountings are now made from brass tube soldered up for example.
The cabin interior is not at all scale. It was designed for easy access into the hull (the whole interior lifts off with the cabin), and fideliity suffered as a result - I completely rebuilt this area to scale (it was good having the real thing around to measure from!)
Having said all this, it was the first kit I'd made, and now unfortunately, mine's really too fragile to be carted around and so I stripped all the radio gear and motors out of her and turned her into a static model (allied with the fact that I cocked up calculating some angles and the cabin top is now a real pig to get on and off and something usually breaks if I do it). As the kit is designed it's a lot more robust.
To sum up, I am pleased with what it turned out like. I enjoyed building it and solving all the little problems that it threw at me, and even though I rebuilt a lot of it, I don't think I could have built a Rother from scratch - it helped having a framework to work around if you see what I mean.

i understand it was re engined and then sold onto the met police and was stationed at whopping, it was renamed thames alarm II

great pics , ive been looking at building another lifeboat myself , but would like to build a mclachlan type at 1/12th scale , does anybody know for any plans available please ? jon

I know you originally posted some time ago and things may have changed but I would be interested in any Arun54 pictures......
