Hi There, the next model is well her way, she is of a well known Ballina built vessel "Jabiru" 58 ft she was designed by Bert Beattie and built at the Ballina Slipway for Colin & Enid Norton ,at the time the head shipwright was Jim Hammond snr , she was launched in 1974, . The keel, deadwood and stem is of Colonial teak (left over from the decking of the "Debrene-Adele" in 1977) the frames, stringers, ribs & planking are of Beech supplied by kevin Rasmussen, she is of 1:16 scale 43.5 inchs , Cheers. :-))
-
Hi there, these set of photo's showing cutting in the stringers and laying them in position then the ribbing ,had to ( boil & steam ) 3/4 of them ,set in a jig and laminate a section of them in her hollow heal area, cheers :-)) ....
-
Hi There , next section of photo's are of planking her and after filling and sanding a coat of wood preserver, cheers.. :-)) .
-
Hi Brian that boat looks lovely mate - That construction looks so strong and such nice planking :-)) I reckon you've got the shortest chisels of anyone I know! They've paid their way and then some - Good luck with this lovely build I'm looking forward to the updates.
-
Do you cut your own strips for the planking?
Do you run it through a thicknesser as well?
-
Mark has said it all, amazing plank work :-))
-
Morning, Ive had that set of chisels since the late 70's but find I probably use say 3 out of the set all the time and have a bad habit of sharpening them on the belt sander instead of the stone Mark O0 , with the planks ,especially with the last 3 or 4 models I have been fortunate to have a friend Kevin that cuts and runs them through his thickness-er for me... :-)) ..

Hi There ,with this section installing the deck beams and the lift out sections ,the beams are a mixture of Tassy Oak and of timber from chairs made in Malaysia (still don't know name of the wood a light to yellowy colour , would class it more of a hardwood than soft ???) the bollards are made from Colonial Teak, with the motor using a Johnson 800 and will be spinning an 80 mm 4 blade prop (re shaped it more to the blade shape of the original ) Cheers :-)) .....
-
Hi There, next group of photo's, pre fiting the Johnson 800 motor, soldering the brass rudder , all deck beams now fitted , pre fitting the ESC base and Servo frame, and the aft section showing the rudder stock tubing in position....Cheers :-)) ....
-
Wow! I mean wow! such amazing work
-
Hi there, thank you mikelimajuliet, withthius next section laying the ply over the deck beams before laying the 5 x 1.5 mm Beech deck strips and the black cardboard, she then had a coat of wood preserver , cheers... :-)) .
-
That looks so nice showing the wood - fantastic :-))
-
Hi there, thank you Mark. Before installing the bullwarks I went ahead with the w-house just to the framing stage, then back onto the bullwarks all the post were made from Tassy oak,,,Cheers,, :-)) ....
-
Hi there, next section showing the bullwarks planked, cutting in the capping side strips, then showing the jig for the shoulder sponsons after they were boiled and left to set overnight, then working on the shoulder bullwarks, cheers.... :-)) .
-
Absolutely splendid work as usual Brian. I always feel your models would probably make very good icebreakers with their sturdy and skilled construction. A delight to watch every build.
Greg
-
Hi there, thank you Greg , Showing the fitting of the capping sections around her shoulders, with the bollards and tie up kleats they are pre fitted ,won't be glueing those in position till the bullwarks etc painted, then back onto the w-house applying her skin and trimmings, cheers.... :-)) .
-
It'll be a shame to paint all of that lovely woodworking.
-
Fantastic joinery and I agree it would be a real shame to paint over it :-))
-
Hi guys, have to paint her or she wouldn't look the same as the real deal ?.Making the w-house side boards (never been a fan of these shaped side boards with the lumps top and bottom, I feel the side boards with a nice curve top and bottom look easier on the eyes). making the exhaust housing, and the back deck hatch.cheers. :-)) .....
-
is this the same Jabiru as in the youtube series here- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84kE13yXgZE
-
No mate, the "Jabiru" model I am making is offan Australian built 58 ft ( 17.57 mtr) prawn trawler,,,cheers....
-
Hi there ,a few more photo's of the build,
-
Oops hit the wrong key :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed: , lets try again.I got a bag full of small wheels etc off one of the members of the local model club, surprising what you can utilize at time ,these particular shaped wheels stood out , perfect for the shaped capstans she had on either end of the main trawl winch, with the winch she had about 3 make overs in the years while the 1st owners had her and having a lend of the photo album container photo's of the deck layout over the years the big decision was which bits n pieces or add on's I would run with , same with the sorting tray - brine box ,her original was just the brine box with the sorting tray lid , I went with the next version when the put lids over each brine bin sections,,,,cheers... :-)) .....
-
I just find your work so inspiring - Each model you build seems to incorporate more detail and joinery of the original boat :-))
-
Hi there ,thanks Mark , this one has a bit more gear on it then the average prawn trawler did working from the Northern Rivers local ports of N.S.W. Showing one of many lugs etc for the gantries prior to soldering, then making the swivel connecting section for the base of the trawl booms ( bit of an over kill how they designed that one ?). This is another mess up of not marking the item ( for & aft properly) the short awning above the winch ,had the holes spot on for the bracing stays , then marked and cut out the openings for the cables and ropes. cheers :-)) ...
-
Hi there, some more of the build, she had an aft ladder from the A-frame down to a frame on the deck behind the aft hatch , to make this frame I first started off using a solid brass rod ,heated it up and did one sharp bend found it wasn't quiet at right angle gave it a slight tap snapped like a carrot >>:-( so used one of the copper planking nails ( 50 yrs old), as everything has to be dismantled, I have the bottom of the ladder tubed so as to slip over the pins on the deck frame & the top of ladder has a U section to sit under the net pull through area under the top of the A-frame , cheers :-)) ....
-
My goodness that ladder is a work of art!
-
Hi There, thanks Mike, With the main trawl booms cut them from a back chair leg (hardwood) was expecting them to bow on me but surprising they didn't so had a win there , not so with the radar stand ,she had an extra pipework (for wiring) and a antenna attached to the front of the stand when i went to sit it on the roof to check it out found I had soldered it on the wrong side , geez so had to un solder and reshape being slightly different angle ????. Next was the board racks ,not like your typical racks they had quiet a bit more pipework ( only got caught with 2 pieces dropping off while soldering beside them , cheers :-))
-
Hi there, some more of the build, making of the front hand railing, each hand railing in 2 sections to allow for the trawl booms front stay cables which attach to the front deck area, then making of the anchor davit, which also pivited back on board if needed so, I was able to use the 1st plough anchor I made for the "Lady-Lin", cheers. :-)) ...
-
Hi there,,these first 2 photo's bit off track but I thought it maybe of interest to some on here, in the 1st photo the chunk of timber sitting beside the model is a piece of Burmese Teak decking 120 mm x 72 mm x 4' 11" ( a cut off) that Colin Norton ( original owner of the "Jabiru") dropped off to me given to him by one of the Shipwright's Jimmy Jnr Hammond had from when the ex Sydney based ferry "South-Steyne" was refurbished at the Ballina Slipway around 1983-84 ? the second photo is of the vessel "South-Styne" at the Ballina Slipway ,we had our trawler tied beside her waiting to go up on the slip the following morning , Jan 1984. The "South-Styne" was built at Leith by Henry Robb Ltd Scotland ,she steamed out to Australia to start her life as a Ferry between 1938 to 1974 ( sorry if any of those details are incorrect ) . next making the life buoy holders from cut offs of plasti board ? I still have from a couple of crane kits I bought from the UK few years back. Now with the whirly birds I would like to say I am happy with them but I'm not (could be a bit neater) she had 4 aerial brackets 2 small & 2 larger ones , they are all made from brass and soldered, cheers.... :-)) ...
-
Wow Brian - I'll say it again WOW!!!!!
-
Hi there , thank you Mark . Next making the trawl boards as she was towing triple gear, she has a trawl board with spider (towing cable attaches to ) & a sled per side, cut a section of copper pipe & flattened for the board shoes then soldered etc ( 168 parts to make the 4 boards) showing the bulk of the bits and pieces made for this model ( you don't realize how many parts till you have to paint them :o , the the start of the painting ,the hull getting her first undercoat ( already had 2 wood preserver coats, she will have 2 undercoats and 2 gloss coats, cheers :-)) ...
-
First class build.
-
Hi there ,thank you Andy , update with the "Jabiru" model, also had the "Beninda" on the bench after last model morning when she was a no go (looks like the ESC decided to spit the dummy in her) . Applying her 1st gloss coat of charcoal on the sponsons etc. My eco friendly paint mixing area in the dungeon. Made a mistake with the motor, no not the colour as the owner wouldn't have green on his boat they sprayed the GM blue ? I put the vinyls facing backwards <*< cheers . :-))
-
Hi there , well the "Jabiru" model No.41 done & dusted finished her last Saturday, she comes in at 11.2 Kg ( 24.64 Lbs), & 3,580 parts .Will be launching her this coming Sunday ( weather permitting) cheers :-)) ....
-
Hi there, these next 2 post are of her launching at the Ballina Marine Modelers Club sailing days 2 weeks ago and yesterday, the original owners and skipper turned up for the launch day Colin (Storkey) & Enid Norton ,also in the photo with Colin & Enid is Jimmy jnr Hammond of the well known Shipwright family from this area. Cheers :-))
-
Hi there , forgot to mention the photo there with Colin (Storkey) Norton and Shane (Sparrow) Castle behind the model, Shane started off as a young deckie working on the "Jabiru" then later skippered her before buying his own trawler , not sure if I already mentioned , the model comes in at 11.2 Kg , Battery 2.75 Kg and has 1.3 Kg of Ballast total 15.25 Kg or 33.5 Lbs, Cheers :-))
-
What a cracking model,, then you had a photo of the South Steyne, which a great uncle of mine took from Robbs of Leith to Sydney in 64 days, a record at the time for a steam ship passage, even though it went aground on a sand bar amongst other things, the delivery skipperr was a bit of an Uncle Albert from Only Fools and Horses, he only had two ships under his command torpedoed by the Germanss during the war lol
-
Hi Wbeedie, thank you , yes the "South-Steyne" still floating tied up down at in Sydney Australia not sure what she is being used for these days ,at one stage she was a floating restaurant after retiring from her ferry days ?...Cheers :-)) ...
