Title: CVA-01 HMS Queen Elizabeth
Post by: Rob47 on August 05, 2024, 03:39:34 pm
Well I decided that I needed to build this again (Nick Brown has the previous one)  This time the hull is virgin, with no cut outs so I can build it as it should be   One big change is it is not going to be cut in half as I had planned, with careful tweaking it fits into the car.

I will try and post as the build progresses.

First shot is first of the three rudders in place (the centre prop is at funny angle as it is just placed in location for measurement purposes)
Second show IT WILL fit :)
Third is that well know pool from Ron Deans
Fourth is to give and idea of how small it is  {-) {-)  I am 172 CM

Hi
You showed us so interesting pics from the very beginning of this build.!! :-)) :-))
It is a stunnningly large model of the aircraft carrier, isn't it??
You could do whatever you like with the model and I do look forward to your progress of the carrier model. :-))
A carrier model especially in large scale is so good and impressive to see her sailing majestically on the water at slow speed
for me. It may be partly because of its massive hull coming from the length, beam and large flight deck. O0
Instead, it may normally take a long time to build like its 1/1 counterpart. {:-{ %%

Pics below are my 1/96 HMS Fencer that required 12 years to complete, though so-called "jeep carrier".

Rob.....I am with Backerther [Kiyo] here..... :-))

Will certainly watch every posting of the magnificently sized model

Just for a heads up, what scale is the model?.....[we can then do the rest of the guesstimations of displacement]

Vessel only, without a Squadron of F16's with their equivalent weight ancillaries

[I will start the ball rolling...........  %)  with 50 kg?]

She is 1/96th scale. Once ret of rudders and prop shafts are in I can put it in test tank to see how much ballast needed

Hi Bob,

That’s going to keep you occupied for a time. {-)

Transporting the completed will be fun  🤣 I know I have a 1/96 HMS Ark Royal (modern)

Above all, the most important is patience/perseverance to lead to a great and final success of a nice, realistic and magnificent sailing on the water. O0 :embarrassed: :-))  Keeping a good health is needless to say even in this building as well or the most important for a long time until the success. !!
You have just set sail for the new world of the magnificent sailing with the overwhelming super carrier model.!!! :-)) :-)) :-))
   Bon voyage !!!!

WoW what have I done !!!!!, took the plunge after measuring 40+ times before cutting, the opening that is cut out will be for the side lift and all the clamps are holding the first part of the flight deck support rail.  The bits of cardboard come from Tesco and are ideal for making templates, save a lot of worry.. Dare I risk saying it, going ok ,so far. %% %% %% %%

Here you go.  you should be familiar with the layout from your Nimitz build, its the stern side lift, and it looks awful as of yet no framework around it, carboard templated just to give an idea

More or less, forward lift is on a cantilever ftame driven by a 360 deg servo
Rear side lift will I hope be prototypical and use chan drive

No and they will not be for a long time, as you can see they are simply placed on wood that needs to meet a bandsaw, then be joined, sanding sealed then painte, so a long way to go yet, possibly by Monday {-) %% %%

Hi Bob,

Sorry if I mist it but what scale are you doing, also are the aircraft 3D printed.

They do look good unpainted, so once you painted and decal them up they will look even fantastic .

Quick up date on CVA-01, , most of the island modules have been built, just need filling and rubbing down, decks waiting to go to bandsaw, next job is glazing the bridge and fitting the dim red lights inside.

Looking good Bob, after reading some stuff about the CVA-01 it turns out that the giant Broomstick radome probably wouldn’t have been fitted and a standard Type 965 radar would have been used but it just doesn’t suit the look of the vessel as that radome is very iconic looking! Apparently the original radar was cancelled but who really cares as it’s a if-only model and it looks fantastic. Keep up the good work, I shall have to finish the original and see if we can meet up with both models one day.
Title: Re: CVA-01 HMS Queen Elizabeth
Post by: Rob47 on September 05, 2024, 09:21:06 pm
Cheers Nick, have to admit Tesco cardboard has been a boon to make template so when the oh##### moment comes no Monet wasted
Yeh read about the radar, we were going to pull out but like I said to you at the show it’s what if
I did mock a mast and fitted bedstead radar, it looked crap

Glad most of the serious cutting is done, just small bit ont port side

When you get really bored glazing you models bridge windows, spare a thought for me and CVA-01.  Loads of them and in two different colours.

This is how she is coming on, must have made major measuring error when decks were cut, they all fitted!!!
All parts are still loose until final fit is ready.

Although parts still just balanced in place I wanted to show a feature of this carrier.  On the flight deck, landings, take off, taxing, and use of lifts could take place at same time, the only thing that could not be done was testing on aircraft engines that were under repair/ maintenance, traditionally this was done when no flying and the aircraft was placed on flight deck.  To make this easier the stern had a hangar entrance so the aircraft could be pushed out and engine tests carried out without disruption to flying.
Here we see a Phantom located at hangar entrance ready to run engine test.

Thanks. its a simple rack n pinion drive.  I woke at 0300 one morning with the idea in my head %% %%
I have to add limit switches and amber wrning lights.  There will be 4 light with two working in one direction and two in the other.  one pair pos neg wired to the motor pos neg, the other pair wired to motor neg pos, so when motoe power is reversed light on other off and vice versa.  Hope that makes sense.
