Title: Stuart Models fuel tank filler valve removal
Post by: Andy-H on January 22, 2025, 09:43:24 pm
I have a Stuart large tank, and the filler valve is leaking gas.  I have a new one on order, as well as the tool, but was hoping to get a little tutorial here on how to remove it, as I don't see any instructions for that anywhere.  Or maybee my google-fu is weak, either way.  It appears that you have to turn it, but does it thread out, is there a trick?  I assume it will make more sense when I have the replacement valve in hand, but I have a while to wait and curiosity is gettting the better of me.

They are usually the Ronson type filling valve, which is screwed into a threaded boss.  The tubular tool sits over the top of the valve and two small lugs sit into the slot on either side of the spindle.

I make a tool by grinding a slot into the end of a flat bladed screwdriver.

This is what the valve and the tool look like:

Thanks for that link.  That's kind of what I figured it looked like, but I didn't realize the threads were so long.  I have the valve in my tank turning, apparently, but perhaps I need to turn it more before the threads are dis-engaged...

So, I made a tool.  Turned the valve..  and it didn't come out.  Then I realized, being the mechanically oriented person that I am, that there might be an o ring or some such.. so I got a small pair of tweezers and sure enough, it pulled right out.

I think my issue is obvious... well, with my gas tank, anyway,  and of course, now I have part of the valve rattling around inside my fuel tank forever.

So, there should be a picture here.. not sure why it's not appearing...

Check if the original filling valve is just screwed in too loose before replacing. I had this on one of my gas tanks.

A tidy little package showed up today from the Royal Mail, with a new valve and a very professional looking removal/install tool.  Hopefully that sorts out my issues...
