Title: Can someone give me a crash course in this Towing malarky?

Hello all.

I regularly see posts discussing towing, but I have to say that I don't understand the concept very well.

Could someone give me a brief overview, for example what is being towed, is it sheer weight, or to a time limit etc etc. Are there rules on engine sizes, battery sizes etc?

if you imagine me to be a simpleton, and then provide an explaination pitched at that mental level, I would be most grateful.
