Although I am a member of the "totally sane, non Makara owning group", I thought you might be open to a suggestion.
When 'Z' class started one of the manufacturers - Dateline Marine offered an annual trophy for the highest score using one of his hulls.
I think someone should suggest the idea to Paul Firmin for the Makaras.
It could be part of the OMRA 'D' class championship, or if you're having your own races, ask him to sponsor the trophies.
Must be worth a phone call?
Danny

Hi danny thanks for your input, great idea but i cant see paul putting his hand in his pocket, but you never know if it sells him some more hulls, one never knows. he might just, like you said its only a call nothing to lose...lets see how many are interested first....al

sounds good tony i say kingsbury because its central, as my water is trafford water sports centre, at manchester, so when that was suggested simon and a few said how about something more central because of the traveling time, but its a option all in the early stages yet, be it will look well a gaggle of raging makaras on the water at once...mad al O0

Hello Mad Makara Men.
I have just inspected my  exhaulst manifold. Both the O rings are flat on one side and it passes water down the exhaust pipe. I have ordered some new rings. However dose anyone have a better way? / have any old exhausts manifold for my Zen 26 they want to sell ::) The pics are what I'm having trouble with. Cheers for your Help. ;D

Post by: pete_486 on December 10, 2007, 08:21:14 pm
hi Bill that manifold is ok its the one Al runs in his makara, but that pipe will not let you tune the exhaust pipe its to long.
you want a 90% header ask Al he's had one in a cobra, there's far to many bends for the exhaust gases to get round quickly.
oh and welcome Big Tee to the madness that a makara brings out in you {-) {-) O0

hi bill petes right the manifold is fine only use viton rings, the header get rid, and buy tony's, what pipe are you using..mad al :)

Post by: Bill D203 on December 10, 2007, 10:25:22 pm
I'm not sure which make of pipe it is . It is very big, S/Steel. It went on sale down here and I got it at a bargin price. Wish I could remember the maker. It seems to keep the noise down very well. Looking forwards to seeing how much deferents a shorter pipe will make.  :D
Title: Re: MAKARA CLUB
Post by: pete_486 on December 10, 2007, 10:52:35 pm
it should be 22mm to fit the exhaust, mine is so i think it's standard 22mm.
i shortened mine and it really does rev, the 90%, but my motor is a sikk, and i think a zen which i have in another boat would be a bit different but not that much.
what exhaust pipe are you running Bill?

Well after a few days of mucking about trying to get some of the gelcoat flaws out of the hull, I have finally managed to get some primer and paint on it. Pics here when the paint job is finished..... Still waiting for the engine mounts and a load of other stuff. Bl**dy frustrating. I can order stuff from the states and it's here in 2 days. Order from the UK and it's a week plus. Go figure...!

Hi all Mad Makara Men. the general feedback i get,is that this fun day is to go ahead, more than likely at kingsbury, if all wishing to participate post which month it should take place the month with the most votes wins, and if then every one is agreed to it we can take steps to sorting it out....my month is....MAY... should be nice the  UK usually has its 2 weeks summer in that month......Mad Makara Al :D O0

Hi folks

End of April is good for me, or anytime in May [bear in mind there are 2 B/Hols in May].  End of June I shall prolly be away with the family for a couple of weeks.  Are we aiming at a Sat or a Sun btw?

Build is progressing slowly although now I have my engine mountings, I can start to move things on apace. Paint is almost finished.  WIll post a couple of pix when I have finished painting it.

Cheers

I have spoken today to Paul Firmin and he agreed to offer some kind of sponsership for the event, not sure what, or what we want. Is it a race meet? or just a jollie?

He would have attended but does not agree with pond racing, and on that note there is due to be a possible break out proper offshore series to be announced some time next year. Arranged by Tony Ellis and Paul. Southampton, Plymouth, Chichister sort of thing. South to South West.

Something to do with WOMRA or whatever that is?

Anyone know where i can get a .21 for an AA boat?

just bought a .21 STS, needs a head conversion and a flywhhel and Andy will do them for me over the coming week. Also spoke to Ian (Iansboats) today and he is making me a couple of fuel tanks as well.

Should be ok on the lakes but no good on the sea, it may be too small as well but worth a laugh

Me thinks the whole set of races, But I would check as things do change for the good some times.
I put a new Hi Tec RX in my boat over Christmas. Ran it out last Thursday, had loads of short range griff from it. Trying a longer aerial and bounding all the ally plates on the top deck as it seems to get worse when i ran it with it on :-\ :-\ :-\

Hi Tec has a built in fail safe. The club Guru swears by them. It would seem we do have a radio dead spot on our lake. I was hoping a new RX would overcome this  :'( Thus far its going to get one more run in the morn, and if still no good i may well get another RX to try. I could really use a matching Sanwa RX but they are a bit on the pricey side.

Yes Al Good AH??? The SS one on Prestwick site should do the job. i may have to cut the rail back a we bit but i think it will be better all round not having those O rings to melt down in the manefold etc. I have also got a bid in for a 275 crab on e bay. When I get them both in it has no reason not to fly. Got a Sat nav tracker for Christmas, I clocked the boat at 34mph on Thurs last week. So I can now tell when i fit things if it improves or not.

Going back to the winter series, I think it will probably run if there are enough entries.
Going back to Hitec vs Futaba, I had a few of the Hitec Rx's with built in failsafe (IPD), and had reliability problems with at least two of them. I also don't like having the Rx and the failsafe physically on the same board and in the same case (eggs and baskets). Much prefer having a separate failsafe, and that the failsafe itself is waterproof in its own right. I've got a few Futaba Rx's now and a couple of Sanwas, and so far no problems with any of them.
Happy New Year one and All !!!

Happy new year Tony.
Re the 4th May I think it is going to a single 30min heat at this stage. However it has not been set in stone as yet. I suppose it will largely depend on how many entry's we get. I have to say we do need a good amount of entry's as its going to cost a bit to hire the lake for the day.
I thank you once again for the pipe.
Cheers for now
Bill

Post by: ids987 on January 04, 2008, 02:52:25 pm
Trouble is, these days there's usually 2 heats of "A" and 2 heats of "D". That makes at least seven in total. With the usual 10:00 start, if you run 20 minute heats plus 10 minutes between, it's at least half past one before all the first heats are done. Even with no lunch break, and not allowing for any stoppages, delays etc it would be at least a five o'clock finish - assuming that none of the other classes run to two heats.
Mind you, it looks like we might need to run a "DM" class this year - just for Makaras......

Ian

Ian - don't even JOKE about it  :o :o :o :o

You're right though, the success of OMRA has made it very difficult for any organiser to have 2 x 20 min heats.  That's why 1 x 30 min is becoming the 'norm'!  The alternative (to get all the races in) could be 2 x 12 or 15 min heats but then we're getting like the circuit racers and Naviga.  That's why so many racers run more than 1 class.  At least then you get more than one bite at the cherry.  If you've gone to the trouble of travelling big distances, maybe starting out before 6am,  it makes sense to have more than one boat as something ALWAYS goes wrong with one of them (at least in my case it does!).  Two classes with a one class space ie. "AA and B" or "A and C" or "B and D" usually gives you a break between races unless you go the whole hog like Bernard and race in nearly every class!  I'll be running A and C this year, with my AA as 'back-up' in case one of the others becomes terminally ill!  That will be enough to concentrate on (at my advancing years)  :'(

Danny

By the time the race end is sounded, everybody has finished their laps (could be 30 secs) got their boats in, collected their stuff and cleared the landing stage, the next lot have got on the landing stage, settled in and got their stuff out, had a quick start up, OOD has called out who's supposed to be there, sounded the 2 mins mill time, then waited 2 mins until the start of the race.......
there's your 10 mins - if your lucky!!

26th sounds good to me. Got to do all my Gas course exams the Monday after so it will welcome divertion before the full on Gas bit. Let me have some directions nearer the time. I have been looking at a Sikk engine on ebay. Hum not sure what to do?? £135 +PP is very tempting. IT has got a Red head to match the boat. Very tempting. Do you think I would be able to get a fair price for my Zen if I sell it?

Damen will be coming as well.

A very good local mate of mine whoe is just finishing his Makara.

There may well be some of the local lads running as well. The multi boats!

Saturdays is reserved for power, the lakes is not massive and there are lots of buoys. Takes some skill but its good for setting up and testing!

Hi Al
It's comming in from singapore . Not 100% sure to go for it yet. Not sure if it will be much better then my Zen 26 with a 257 crab which is on it's way from the USA. I have clocked my Makara with the old unkown crab at 33mph, I want to see how much it inproves with the 257. and of course the 90" header rather then the old header which blow last week.  May be it will be good with the 2 mods. If is then I may stick with the Zen.
Title: Re: MAKARA CLUB
Post by: 2772e on January 06, 2008, 06:47:25 pm
Bill,

Why the change to a Sikk? I ran my first season on a standard Zen and did OK. Could have done with a bit more power at times though.

Paul said the engine would loose up though so should be better this year?

Cant you get the Zen modded if you want more speed?

I prefer the reliability and ease of set up?

The new carb and pipe seem to hve made a big inprovment. I did clock the boat before the changes at 33mph. I cant wait till Sunday to see how much it has gone up by.
Changing the subject. I am running the Stevenage OMRA meet on 4th May. I know that it is in the middle of 3 meets but are any of you Mad Makara boys comming down?? O0

Erm, chaps - I know it's a stupid question, but do any of you belong to Kingsbury club to check dates?
They have a lot of other events on the lake apart from OMRA, like scale, sail and multi, plus tethered hydro at the far end.
Might be worth someone getting in touch with one of the club officials.

Bill,

Glad to hear you got her running. Have you clocked the speed the changes?

Brentwood details are at www.brentwoodmodelboatclub.co.uk (http://www.brentwoodmodelboatclub.co.uk)

It can be a pig to find but if you have any problems give me a ring on the cell.

I guess we will be there from about 10 until we run out of fuel/we break something/get too wet/gets dark etc. 3 Makara's will be on the water.

Put me down for Stevenage and i guess Damen will be along with his as well.

As for the MM day have we firmed up the dates yet?

Hello. Have you taken a look at the NEW Omra web site Simon? Your Makara shows up in the roll. Well done Danny. Not before time it had a rework over. I have ordered up another 40mhz reciver , However If you do have a spare 2.4GHZ set I could borrow then it would put my mind at rest. Our club guru dose not like them ,in fact he even say they don't work in boats. It would be nice to prove it one way or the other.  I will email my phone number Tony so we can arrange a meeting. How many do you get at an average meeting?  I guess most run more than one class. Is this FSR-O or H?

Is anything in any of the mags (I read MB regularly but MMI only occasionally)?

Well half of th MMM got together today. Maiden voyage for Damon's Asbo Makara, Bill kindly joined us and mine had a very brief run on the water.

Damens all run in and performing well, clocked at 33 mph, then he snapped the flexi.

Bill's was running well, similar speeds, damaged the stuffing tube. Unfortunately there was a coming together between Damon's Kyosho RTR with Bill's Enforcer, Bills came off worse and hopefully can be repaired. Rather a large V shaped gash in the starboard side!!

My new AA Bitburger cat performed very well and after running in and very slight tuning gave speeds of 33.4mph. I think that is good for a .21, i am sure you will all let me know?

Unfortunately i was again beset with problems with the Makara, failed receiver, one too many dunkings last year, swapped with a spare and back on the water. Failed rudder servo, swapped with a spare and back on the water. And then the crankshaft seal popped off, therefore no compression, therefore no more running! I think i stood to close to Danny last year!!

A good day needless to say.

Regards

Simon

Thanks for the report Simon.
You got your BEST results last year when I was standing next to you  O0
What's with all these flexi problems? I know you're knocking a lot of BHP through them but there seems to be quite a few 'issues' with them. Is 1/4" strong enough for these engines?
The two Makaras in the pics seem to have a lot of boat out of the water. Was it that rough, or is there some strut/stinger adjustments to be made (or was it just for the GPS  {-) {-)  )

Hey Danny,

It was a bit wild at times, the orange one has all the weight at the back and Bill was off a wave. Good for the camera though.

1/4 should be fine, just crap flexi's. Have to speak to mr Copley!

Only joking by the way, trust you will standing next to me this year? I can pit for you?

Still waiting to get the bits back from the club engineer. Should get them next Sunday. The modes are on the EX pipe.  I am having an extention block made to go between the header and the head so it lines up better & a Collier to stop the tail pipe cutting into the boat.
None of which will make it go faster but hopfully last longer. Shorted out my RX probs by replacing the unit with a Sanwa rx which works just fine. Had A brill day with Simon and other last Saturday. I only had my old Endforcer to run but I got 3 liters of fuel through it with only driver errors to stop play.  Lets hope the Makara dose the same in a few weeks time. At the mo the head- carb- ex pipe are all being worked on. PS got the 257 carb on which did liven things up a bit.  O0

Hello.
Heres a little ? Some of you may know that Syd passed away last year. He had lots of OMRA stuff as he was a active member for a long time. Stevenage club has been given a electronic lap counter. 2 of the LCD screens don't work ( gone black) which still leaves 10 that do and of course the lap timer. A dose any body know any thing about this unit and if I can get a new LCD screen x2 .
I would like to they to get it back into shape if possible, but I don't want to spend a fortune. It was made in 1993.
ANY HELP OUT THERE??????

Bill,

Damon went testing last Thursdayish and managed to break his engine.

Because there was no flexi in the engine/exhaust it snapped the bolts straight out of the crankcase, and took a large chunk with it.

I seem to remember that you had a similar problem with yours and were awaiting some new bits. A spacer with water cooling?

A word of advise, make sure there is flexibility between your engine and your exhaust, if not you will suffer similar damage. The mod we have discussed is to cut the header down and fit one of those stainless flexi pipes in between the header and the exhaust, solder/weld it all together. Plenty of movement!

We don't want yours going the same way?

He has just ordered a replacement to end from bluefishy, an expensive afternoon!

Call me if you want to discuss.

Hi fellas

Sorry not to have got back any quicker re the MMM day out. I have had a look at the calendar for 2008 for Kingsbury and it's pretty chokker.

The only Sunday they have available is the 29th [and I am away on my annual jollies so I'd miss that one :( ]  They do have some Saturdays available it seems.
Can it be a Saturday or did you want to keep it to a Sunday?

Similarly, it if doesn't have to be June, then July 20th looks free at present.

Lemme know.

Glad you liked the tip Simon. Make sure you follow the instructions for the dials closely. I tried a different route and screwed it all up majorly. Make sure you usethe nail varnish. I tried modelling glue and it all went to bubbles!

MHZ USA also do some very nice grills and louvres in ally.

Which model figures did you use by the way? My son saw your boat at Kinbgsbury last Nov and thought they were great.

Cheers

Phil,

Raided the wife's nail varnish last night, so fingers crossed.

I bought the head and shoulders from Tony Ellis (Model Marine Supplies) and then chopped their heads off. Went on to the Red Bull website and found some ear defenders that came in a small Red Bull Helmets. And luckily enough they were scale size.

I think the quality of the helmets was probably the reason i won the concourse last year.

I have ordered the full figures from warehouse so hope to swap over the helmets again. Tried getting new ones via Red Bull but they don't list them any more. I will have to ask Bill to have a lookout when he goes up there next.

Can we have a show of hands for the 20th July?

As far as I can see at the mo, we potentially have the following from MBM
BigTee [who can even provide a rolling start with a pace boat if we need it!]
Bill
Pete
Al
Simon
Me
Damon

If you can come back with an "Aye" or "Nay" we can at least gauge the level of support.

Cheers!

Fellas, I could do with picking your collective brains if poss.   I am nearing the end of fabrication on my boat [thankfully!] and it's getting to the point when I can start assembly, [which I reckon will only take a few hours].  However, I still have a few bits to source and as this is my first build of  any kind, I could do with some recommendations.

Firstly, which receiver battery pack make would you recommend and where to source from? I am going to be running a cheapy Futaba Attack 2ER and I need to run a 6v Rec. pack of some kind but which make come at a sensible price for power/duration levels?

Additionally, I am going to need a charger. Will I be likely to need to charge my pack between races in which case a 12v charger is favourite, or do you think I can get away with one charge per event? Whichever, which charger would you recommend and please bear in mind that it mustn't break the bank!

Finally, I was thinking of running a bag tank and so I got a 2litre tank from Nimrif when I bought the hull. It seems far too big for the job so first off, what size tank would you recommend for racing and am I going to need any special kit to fit the thing and refill it between heats? I reckon a 1litre tank should be able to fit between my stringers under the radio box, but will it be big enough for racing?

Sorry about the Spanish Inquisition but I am a n00b when it comes to model boats. Full size ones are no problem, but these things are a different ball of wax!

Over to the cognoscenti.......

phil good to here your on the last leg now , then get it in the water   :D

as for rx battery packs go for a " c" size pack with not less that 1200 ah rating they go up in capacity from there onwards but the 1200 will do a full days racing ( well just the one race , after all its omra  ::) )
good place to get them is http://www.modelpower.co.uk/ you will also find charges on there as well ( i have a good one that i will sell if you are interested  ;) )
fuel tank size will  depend on how you run your engine and boat , with my race engine and a 30 min heat 2 lts will just about do  :o
if you go for the plastic type 1200 /1500 mls will be more that enough ( make sure you get the correct bung for gas )
there are quick fill set up and i do have them on some hulls but i have damaged an engine due to an air leek on the seal making the engine run very lea >:(n  the best and most simple way is to fit a tee inline between the carb and the tank . cap the tee part off and use this to refill , but dont worry abut having to refill between heats as you only get one race per day  ;D

hope this helps

POWER SUPPLY O0
I have used at 6v 1300 maH  jelly acid cell from Maplins. Aprox £5.00. You do have to buy a charger ,which again they sell. However It is a mains wallwart type for a slow over night charge. I have got two to make up 12 volts in my Makara to run some fans and dash board lights. I am planing on putting a CCTV on as well very soon.

Phil,

Aye in the fist instance for Damon and me.

I run a battery pack from Model power NIMH so no memory and go for the type that holds it charge if left for a while. Think they are about £13. You can use your standard transmitter charger but it will take a long time to charge. Work it out with the amps etc. I have got a fast charger from Ripmax, cheap and cheerfull.

A also run a solid tank, 1500cl but they do 1200, 1000 etc. Again cheap from Ripmax or your local Hobby Stores, again about £12-£13.

If you want to give Vic a ring he can post you one, just say you want one the same as mine? 0208-804-7452/07966-273231

You're only using two servos so even if your rudder one is very high powered you won't need a huge power supply.
I run three servos (incl mixture) with AAA size NmH of 1500mA which usually last a weekend event (no comments about me only doing 5 minutes of a half hour race!!).  I would suggest that, as weight is not a major issue in 'D' class, you go for AA size. Model Power do a pack - "6.0 Volt 2400mAh ModelPower NiMh AA House Style Receiver Pack" - for £9.95 which would probably last you a week!  I charge mine from the cheapo Futaba charger which, at 45 mA takes ... er .... oh, almost exactly 2 days  ::) ::)
I've no idea about tanks so I'll leave that to the experts!  Unlike glow engines, I've heard that a sparkie will run for 24 hours on a thimbleful of 2 star - never tried it, but obviously it must be true - and probably at 250 miles per hour as well {-) {-)

Not long until it's time to press the 'GO' button!

Thank you all of you who replied to my queries the other day. Your advice has been most helpful.  Off to buy some batteries now!  O0

Just in case you hadn't seen these before, and by way of gratitude, here are a few clips of full size Makaras [Apaches] really going for it.  Some of the footage is absolutely awesome. They really do get some big air!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpj_NYNDKgs   - Big Spinout in this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_6vdTEChas - Mini documentary about team Apache

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cSR2Hay6uc&feature=related - Shame about the music!

Some of you might also like a copy of my desktop wallpaper. See attached.

I'd really like to make a replica Warpath next and install it with twin outdrives and either a Zen 230 twin [to keep it Omra eligible] using the Bonzi twin as a base and going for the 230 block and piston. MHZ do a load of really nice shiny bits and they also do a 60" Apache Hull..... :o Now all I have to decide is which Petrol station to rob to fund it!

My bilge paint arrived this morning so I have been and painted out the engine bay in nice shiny black which will hopefully look the part against the ally brackets and black radio box.  The bilge paint is water, oil and fuel resistant so it will hopefully keep the bay in good nick.  Can't wait for it to dry so I can start final assembly!  Andy P said last week that he should hopefully be sending off my exhaust today so I might even manage to get some testing in this weekend!!! WOOHOO!  :D

Cheers

Phil,

When i saw Andy P Saturday he was finishing your manifold and he had the cones and all ready so i am sure it will be with you this week.

I fancied making a true relica Warpath with twin Z drives and twin 23's.

The costs have put me off though, dont worry about the fuel, have you priced up the kit needed, two of everything?

No real power or speed advantage but would look cool.

Dont race it if you want to keep a very expensive paint job though!

If that bladder bag is surplas i will take it off your hands?

When i painted mine out on the inside i wish i had added a coloured gell coat to the epoxy, that way when you want to add or restick bits you dont have to grind all that new paint off, hopefully you will not go through the pain i did last year.

Regards

Simon

Hi Simon

Thanks for the heads-up on the pipe. I hope Andy does manage to get it to me this week as I am planning on doing the maiden run this Sunday!

The 2L bag tank I will use for racing as I can still use the tank although I won't fill it completely unless conditions dictate so.  I am going to use a smaller tank for testing.  Hopefully it will fit under my radio box between the box and the shaft.

Yes, the Warpath replica is very tempting but I can't see much change out of about £1500 to do it properly.  Still we can dream can't we!?

I thought about adding a colourative to the resin on the engine bay but thought better of it at the death as it would have held me up even longer while I sourced one suitable. I dont' mind grindng a bit of paint of if necessary. I can soon touch it up again!

Incidentally, are you running a nylon bush between your drive dog and strut, or have you just allowed for a slight gap to allow for torque takeup in the flexi?  I am having the devil's own job in finding an RC supplier that lists them!  I dare say I could mince down to the local hardware store and see if he has any nylon 3/16 ID washers but I want to make sure I get the right sort.  My drive dog also seems bl**dy tight to get on the shaft too. did you have to drift yours on before tightening up the set screw?  It may be that my shaft has a couple of burrs which are making the process a little sticky but when in doubt, a large hammer should prevail! Let me know before I embark on the less than subtle solution!! :D

Cheers

Phil,

I wish i was running a bush! I managed to snap another shaft on Saturday, did not leave enough of a gap and the dog buried itself in the strut and then the shaft snapped!

Live an learn!

I dont normally bother, just leave a gap between 6 and 10 mm, if the shaft touches it will chew a bit of nylon up. My dog was also tight, i put it in the lathe with a bit of emery and tidied it all up.

Phil/Simon
I know your engines are putting out some mean power but there must be something wrong somewhere to keep getting wound up flexis. The "twist" in a 1/4" shaft of 12 - 15" length should be no more than 3-4mm max otherwise it's going to distort (and break). If its shortening more than 5mm, I would suspect something wrong with the flexi manufacture or material.
You can (and should) use a PTFE thrust washer to avoid metal/metal contact between the dog and shaft end.  You can get them from Bernard Holder (phone no in OMRA newsletter) or Mark Copley
http://www.mcopracing.co.uk/16253.html (http://www.mcopracing.co.uk/16253.html)  (they are under drive dogs).
Give the boat a SHORT run and check for wearof the PTFE, if there is any significant amount the inner needs easing back.  Set is so that you are just getting contact then leave an extra mm gap.
If you want ultimate speed - use radial thrust washers from SMB (Sub Miniature Bearings).

Sorry to hear about your problems but thats boating for yaa  ;D,yes they seem to have sold out maybe send them an email see if they plan on getting any more.As for your batterys for the rx get a 5 cell nimmh hump pack, no memory and hrs of runtime.I charge mine for an hr before i run to top it up and it lasts all afternoon.Simon i have to agree with Danny if you keep breaking flexis something is badly wrong i havent brok one yet in 2 yrs boating.I leave a 1/4 "gap between dog and strut hub,my strut has a brass hub i have a brass thrust washer too but it never touches the hub so its not even needed.

I had a late night screwing everything together and we have been out today, Damon and Tony. Damons boat is back on the water although he blew another exhaust, my problems have been ironed out with the flexi etc, apart from now i have radio glitching. Bloody boats. Tony is running well.

Looking forward to a bit of racing next Sunday.

Hi Simon
Been out with the FG and filler this week. The rudder went up when it hit something in the water at WGC on weds . Lost control and it hit the brick work. Front and rear damage but its all repaired now.
Phil came down to Stevenage last Sunday. Good looking boat. It was riding a big high in the front so a little weight was added which seem to do the trick. Pity he then lost the lid. No buoyancy fitted.  ::)

Hi Bill. New lid arrived the other day. I am waiting for some s/steel rod to arrive to glass in to the leading edge rather than using the brackets that I used before to secure it and I will be getting some motorbike fairing clips for the back end of the hatch. I don't think the 50mm bolt was secure enough and it must have vibrated open which caused the lid to pop off.

I have also had to find some new louvres so they won't be ready until Wednesday or so, so the last few days of next week will be a mad dash to get it painted and ready for next Sunday.  Looks like testing this week will have to be done without the lid :S Fingers crossed....

Hi Bill just got back from work to see your post and the engine damage. Unlucky that, Bill. Maybe your shunt the other day did more damage than you realised? It's a real shame about the engine as your boat was flying last weekend and looked all ready to go for the start of the season.

I am sure Big Tony will be able to help you out with a proper new block but just in case you hadn't seen it already, as a backup Tony Gilder has a Zen 260 which might be worth a look at as as standby unit.
 http://www.omra-uk.org/for_sale.htm
If I had the readies I'd bag it just in case my block develops any problems!
Hope you manage to get something sorted soon.
Thanks for keeping a weather eye out for my lid!  Hopefully this next one won't come off!!!!
Cheers

Still awaiting a reply from KWPMBC about the Mad Makara Day Out.  I will let everyone know as soon as I hear anything.

Incidentally, as well as getting together to have a bit of an informal thrash, should we make this a bit of a social event too?  Family members along for the ride? Get a barbie or something going?  I know KWPMBC do an annual barbie at least once a year on the Evening Sail event, they might allow us to do the same if we ask nicely and providing it doesn't breach Park Rules.

Pre-empting a positive response from the club, we might like to think about what we are going to do on the day other than just chucking the boats in and going for it! Suggestions please and if all goes well, I'll be happy to organise it.

Cheers [mine's a pint!]

Sounds like a dam good idea, familly and food and the park. Plenty for all to do.

Tony has agreed to act as a safety boat for a rolling start so we can have a race or two.

Is it not what we usually do down the lake but with more Makara's.

I was hoping to get some testing done over the Easter break whilst I am down here in Wales as I am booked in for the Chase Race. I was hoping to get some proper sea time in with the boat but the weather is far too rough. Its blowing about a 6-7 Northerly and peeing down most of the time. :(  I'll have to wait until I get back next week to Kingsbury.

In the meantime, the pub is beckoning and there is a pint of Rev. James with my name on it!

Cheers!

Hi Phill
Not much boating going on here. Snow Stoped play this morn.
Got my new Sikk engine going at about 3/4 power now. I was out with Simon and  Damon Friday and clock it on a GPS at 33.7 MPH  :) :)
It gave me no troubles all morn.
I am not going to Torquey as I get sea sick and that would be No fun at all for me in a chase boat. My 1st race should be Bristol.
Have a pint for me
Bill. O0 O0 O0

DANNY. Who do I contact for the Bristol meeting ? A phone number would be Grand.

The contact for Bristol is Phil Locke on 01179 604959
This might work (I'm still working on the site!) -

BTW  You would have NO chance of getting seasick in a chase boat - you're FAR too busy thinking of all the other things you have to do to worry about the boat bobbing up and down a bit!

Stavros,

Be carefull where you go chucking that tared, brush. {-)

I was a scale guy and still am, long before i got onto the racing scene. In fact when racing got quiet last year i started a tug for towing etc.

I was at the first Mayhem bash last year at Wickstead, both days so got drowned on the Sunday and had to have my caravan towedd out of the field. And that was with 2 RTTL's and my Dutch harbour tug.Hope to make it up there with some of my scale boats as well as the racers.

I have finally had a reply from KWPMBC regarding the Makara Day Out proposed for this year. In principle there are no objections, however the issue of insurance has been raised and we may need OMRA approval as the most sensible way around it is to run it as an OMRA event but not part of the championship calendar. I don't know if OMRA will go for this as it is a social event rather than a race meet but I will ask the questions and report back on the outcome.

Should permission be granted by OMRA to run it as a social event, then the only proviso to participating will be that anyone who wishes to be involved will need to be an OMRA member to qualify for the insurance cover.

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

Phil.

For what it is worth, Phone Alan or Danny and they should be able to give an answer.  I guess most of the Mad Makara men are in OMRA, and as I run on my own lake here at Stevenage I am covered by OMRA insurance. As for the social side of it BBQ etc I'm not sure. prob not. However you can get liability insurance to cover you for the day very cheaply.

Often Mart, things are not as simple as they may appear and when multiple insurance policies are concerned, it is important to get things right as cover may not be valid under certain circumstances. I am seeking clarification and will advice those concerned as soon as I have the relevant info.

Hi Bill,

Just been trying to produce a head button for a RB Concepts engine I've had hanging around for ages. It came with a one-piece heatsink and head button, so I had to hack the top off - then face turn it flat. Hopefully the water jacket from the Novarossi I ran on Sunday should fit. They're Novarossi based, but unfortunately the RB is a short-stroke, and the Nova's a long stroke, so the bore is different (ie the button from the Novarossi won't fit the RB engine). All being well, it should make a pretty decent AA class engine.

Started rebuilding what was my backup CMB .45. Finished rebuilding and trueing the crank, which is probably the most time consuming job. Need to change the bearings and put back together with a new piston and liner. The next most time consuming job is putting the "C" clip back in the piston - through the exhaust port. Definitely a job for a gynaecologist on the .45. That particular engine trashed the piston and liner when the "C" clip came out at full speed. I haven't had much luck with CMB .45s so far....

My Makara turned up yesterday. Don't think I'll have it ready for Stevenage though.

Ian

Title: Re: MAKARA CLUB
Post by: Blagmeister on April 17, 2008, 04:31:40 pm
Hi Ian - it might be well worth doing what Bill suggested to me on Sunday to your Makara hull before you go fitting it out.  You'll probably have noticed that the layup is really quite thin and in places the hull is weak and flexes like mad, [as well as succumbing structurally to the ministrations of errant competitors set on torpedoing you!]. Bill suggested mixing up a load of liquid resin and sloshing it around the inside of the hull to give it another layer of thickness on the grp.  Wish I had thought of that before last weekend....

Even with full length 9mm stringers coated in glass plus a grp-sheathed solid wooden radio box, my hull is still too light, and it showed on Sunday in the rougher water.  A bit of extra layup won't do it any harm ;)

Glad you got one though!  Thats another nutcase to join the crew!

Incidentally, some good news back from OMRA regarding the Makara day out. Alan emailed me today and basically gave us OMRA's blessing and also stated that the OMRA insurance is open and covers us all the time, and not just on OMRA sanctioned events.  Robin Butler [KWPMBC Offhore Sec.] has kindly offered to pencil in the date in July for us in the Kingsbury calendar, so it looks like the day will be a runner at this point in time. I may need to firm up a few other issues such as whether or not we can get permission for a BBQ within the park boundary during public hours but leave it with me and I'll keep you all posted here.

Cheers!

Phil

Phil,

I'll be building mine for "C" Class, so it will be slightly different - no stringers for a start.
I'm debating whether to strengthen it or not. Resin on its own will make it more rigid, and heavier, but probably not much stronger. Polyester resin on its own is pretty weak, so another layer of layup would add a lot more strength. Or maybe mix chopped strands in with the resin, and paint it on.
If you do slosh the resin around, try to make sure it doesn't pool too much anywhere, or it will tend to get rather hot as it goes off.

Get some matting and use epoxy and  that will strengthen it no end, epoxy will cure on poly no problem and its way stronger too!!.To be honest i dont know how they get away with laying those hulls so thin  ::),you could get an aeromarine appache for not much more and know your getting quality sorry to bang on but thats my honest opinion  ;).Phil told ya insurance is insurance  O0!!

.Phil told ya insurance is insurance  O0!!
Mart

Indeed it is Mart however, KWPMBC quite rightly raised the issue of having more than one insurance for potentially the same event which is not permissible under UK law. They simply wanted clarification that the OMRA insurance would be suitable for this event which gladly, it is.  It's always best to be belt and braces in all things which have a potentially legal connotation in my book.

Cheers!

Mart,

The Makara is about the same size as the Giant Apache. Even a UK made Giant Apache will set you back about £170 these days. The "real" Aeromarine ones are about that in US dollars - Plus god knows how much shipping from the US, then UK duty. The finish of the Makara is definitely not the best I've seen, and I'd say the mould has a few cracks now, but it is very cheap for its size, and most of them seem to work pretty well.
I'm with you on epoxy though. I've used it on polyester hulls with success.

Bill,

Apart from those who gave me entries at Bristol, one more this week so far...

You can pick up an aeromarine one cheap and even with shipping still be reasonably pleased with it,duty whats that never had to pay any on anything  {-),mind you most of my stuff was sent as a gift  :).My mate bought an aeromarine hull not long ago and was still as cheap as his cat he sent back to you know who even with shipping and guess what the boats awesome quallity wise. Not sure if anyone this side of the pond has the aeromarine hulls in stock.?

By the time you've strengthened it and so on, is it still as cheap?

Just as an aside, has anyone tried the Prestwich Miami 55 (£159) that's a good price and Daves quality is good on his other hulls.

I am hoping to be at Kingsbury, but I have a sound job on Sat and it depends on what time I hit my bed Sat/Sun morn.
My radio box held up very well after turning it over at Stevenage. I had to straighten out the rudder. I must have hit something during the race which flipped me over.

Hi Simon I am thinking of building one of John Smiths boats for next year. So I will have to make some room for it in my shed + some Duse to go towards it would be helpfull.
My endfrocer as you know has a repair in it where Dameon hit it + a few battle wounds. I need to refit the tuned pipe back. I took it out to see if it would fit into the Makara when i was having fun and games. It will take me an hour then it's ready to run. I should put it on my list to be done over the weekend.  I will be selling it complet with all the radio gear. All you will need is a crystal and TX to run it.

I strip all the cooling circuit out and could not find any blocks in it? I have now put a second pick up point over the prop direct the the engine. The ex pipe & manifold cooling is of the old rudder pickup point. I hope to get down the lake on Sunday morn to test it out.
I may make it to Byn back. I have booked in but got a heavy day on Sat and may not be in a fit state. I will how ever be in Devise Wilts so 1/2 way there.

Dose any one Else fancy a run up to north Wales 30th/31st Aug to the Mayhem show.
I was hoping to get a few boats on show at Wicksteed next year, but it would seem we will have some water to run on at this show.
It would be nice to show of our boats. O0

I am free that weekend but I am not flying the flag on my own.  I think there is camping nearby. I will try and find out.

Now I have had a look at all the pics, and I thought I was mad running high speed straight runners, but you lot need those special white coats and padded rooms. But what you really need to do is come to Llanberis and show us mere (sane) mortals
what it's all about

White coats  :D  At the mo it looks like 3 Makara boats are interested in showing our ware's Just got to get the B&B shorted.
Oh yes buy fast we mean somewhere between 30 to 40 mph is norm. Hope theres lots of water?? {-) {-) We have tracked them with GPS so this is not just us boasting it's fact.

Bill,

Did you manage to test your new cooling arrangement yesterday ?

Anyone got any news on the Makara day out ? Is it definitely 20th July (can't make it) ?

Done a little bit more on my Makara.
After much procrastination - whether to add anything to the hull, whether to:

1) Lay up with more Polyester / GF
2) Paint on epoxy / chopped strands / microfibres mix
3) Lay up with epoxy / GF

After guesstimating how much (expensive) epoxy I'd need, I finally went for 1); so I should end up with a much heavier boat - even if it's not any stronger. I just hope it sets - the polyester resin's been in my shed for about three years. The mat came in two strips, so I've laid one each side - from almost the top of each side, to about an inch or so above the keel. I think it was a metre long, so I've done about the rearmost two thirds of the boat that way.

Hi Ian
I put another pick over the prop but it didn't do much.  Spent the afternoon in the swapping over the water pump from the Endforcer, and fitting a low pick up point. Seems OK in the garden. I am going to blow out Bryn Bach next weekend till I get a bit more testing done. Hopfully it will be OK for Branston. O0

Hi All

The Makara Day Out  is indeed scheduled for the 20th July but I am still waiting to hear back from Robin Butler about what is happening. In theory there should be no probs as we have OMRA cover but it's whether or not the Park will allow it.

Protocol demands that we approach KWPBC and do it all properly but failing that, there is nothing to stop ppl turning up and making a day of it so long as there are KWPMBC members on hand to operate the rescue boat {Me!}

I'll hassle Rob this week before my hols. and let you all know.

Bill, Where is this pic of the month? linky please?

Cheers all

Phil.

Hi Tony.
Yes please to the Ex pipe. I have fitted the stinger off the Endforcer to my Makara today. I have decided Not to go next Sunday. 1 I want to keep the boat in one bit for Weymouth and as i said IF it goes wronge I will not have any time to fix it. ( Hols). 2 I have just been to pick up from Heathrow the Ozy branch of the family & I suspect I will have to be a the Family garthering next Sunday Lunch time. 3 I can try and tune the boat with the correct pipe on next Sunday morn. Maybe bring My Ozy Uncle to show him how it's done over here.
I take it you now have my Address????
Cheers for now

Nice part of the Country.
Yes I stayed at Lodmore country park in a tent on Saturday night. I had a pitch next to Kurt. It's all good fun. Got very damp at night. I had to dry the tent out over the washing line today before I packed it up in its bag. We had the tent down by 7.45 am so didn't get a chance to dry on the spot. I needed a parking spot at the Pav and breakfeast.

I use an alley sandwich box which Martin put me onto. I am sure Millets sell them. I added some extra foam strip seal on the inside of the lid and box which when the top is fitted it seals up. I had loads of trouble with with the Maplin type boxes leaking. If you go back to aprox Jan time there should be a load of stuff and some pic's i think.
Title: Re: MAKARA CLUB
Post by: gaznjant on July 14, 2008, 10:05:24 pm
yea i need to go seek a good box. but how do you seal the wires that are outside the box ? just with the rubber pushrod seals ?
Title: Re: MAKARA CLUB
Post by: Bill D203 on July 14, 2008, 10:30:29 pm
Hello
Laptop is playing around.
I pass the rods and Throttle boden cable through rubber grommets and cover the rods in grease to seal them. Seem to work just fine. it must be a tight fit.

Hi Mart long time no here. I hope all is well with you and yours.
My boat was flying at Llanberis. It is nice to have so much water to open her up on and keep on going. Have done loads of work over the summer. change the engine to a Tuned Zen, fitted 2.4 Ghz radio gear, change the ex pipe to an 26 cc MHZ pipe instead of the MHZ 50cc pipe which i started with. All of which has made the boat run better in its own way. It's a pity we are nearing the end of the race meetings.
Oh well best get off.
Cheers now

Hi Mart
When you are ready to produce these to sell on, please put a posting in our 'Traders Section'. Even though you are not a full time trader you will get a better response there. We are tryiing to keep all the stuff people might want to buy in one place. If you like you can think of it as the Mayhem shop window.

Hi Danny
Yes still got the same boat as last year. I was going to change it but as it took me all year to getting it to run right I am running it for this year. The truth is I'm not sure how many races I'm going to be able to get to. I'm in Oz from March for a few weeks, so thats the start knack up.
How's your boat doing?
Should be good to see the boys from up north's new engine. I'm hoping to pick up a new Zen in Hong Kong on the way home from OZ.

Hi Danny, Submerged drive it is then  {-) {-) {-)
Got to shorten the stuffing tube slightly to allow a bit of "negative". Think I will have to take a file to the hull to try and flatten the rockers out as well. I toyed with doing that before I ran it, but decided to try it first.

So just a quick question on set up if I may - at what distance from the tip of the vee to the centre line of shaft are the well sorted and nice handling Makaras running? I am the new owner of Simon Beamants Makara and I am just putting it back together at the moment, my hardware is different to what he was running so just want to try to get it somewhere near right form the start.

Cheers.

pretty much standard stuff, Zen powered with a stinger drive ('Cause I had one lying around), speedmaster rudder.

Prestwich pipe. That's about it really.

I'll get it working, was just wondering if anyone knew of any real "don't do it's" with them, or anything else to help speed up the set up.

Cheers again.

Pass on the above. However I only use JBL speakers on my sound system here at Unicorn Sound. Hence the stickers on my new boat. Years of trying loads of other speakers I found them the best.
As for my boat It is LIME green The flash on my camera has made it yellow. Yes it should stand out on the lake. I wanted a Red one but this and a pale blue colore wah what John had already made at the time. ;)

Thanks to Darren at MK MBC I got my boat in the water today. It ran very well. One or two bits to do but overall it was a successful 1st run.
Willen lake is quite large but with little wind the water was very flat. The next thing is to see how it rides over choppy water.
In General I am a Happy bunny and with just a few things to work on over the next few weeks.

Hi Danny.
It is the same engine as the Makara. I'm am not sure how fast it was as Willen is a large lake and difficult to judge. I should have put my GPS unit in it to check it out but I was just happy to get it on the water. Maybe next time I will track her speed. With a few modes it should be good.

Have a good time - again  <:( <:(

The great thing about racing against others is that you COULD only be doing 20 mph, but as long as the rest are only doing 19 mph then all is well  :-))

cant you just make what you need or get someone to make the bits for you.
Then atleast youl still have a nice complete boat to show him ,just before you break his neck :o

Is it something special you need ?

as for pewople having new hatches made to replace sunken ones, why not get them
made hollow and filled with foam so they will float !!!!!!

surely it would make sense to have floating hatches for all boats realy, i know the cost might be a bit more, but well
worth it, especially if you have a real fancy paintjob on it .

Most of us just glue on some floatation (bit of foam works for me) but some guys forget which is where guys like me usually come in  O0.

Sounds like par for the course from what i have seen with a friends cat m8 .You wouldnt believe the pile of crap he got for £400 it had holes 1/4-1/2" in diam and open seams in what should have been a fully finished seamless hull.My friend did post pics on another forum of it before he finally got to send it back for a refund.I heard hes retired also and his son now runs a shop but the boat building has stopped.

How do people get away with this type of thing.

I think the best thing to do is to forget about nimrif models and make the bits you need.

get the boat on the water and enjoy it.
shove a couple of very fast electrics in it and see whats the fastest you can get from it.

no good sitting their not fully built getting knocked about when its cost so much money.

or take it to every boating event you can and show people what a lovely boat  he sold you. ?

you could have a nice big sign standing next to it to promote nimrif models   <*<

Ive seen these somewhere else.

does it have to be these exact things ? is it going to be built exact to scale. i.e have the right decals etc

or could the scoops and vent be a bit different ?

I cant see these being to hard to either make from something else or make by vacum moulding ?????

Bit of hardish foam or carve a bit of wood then make a vacum and make them from plastic etc.

just a thought.

Sounds interesting Phill, you going to show us your vacum forming skills ? .I can get hold of plastic card in large sheets i might need to think about having a go some time.Ive seen a few home made boxes to do small parts this way and it seems to work quiet well just using a vacum cleaner lol.You can even make small electric hulls this way too and they come out really nice.

vac forming can make some very nice bits for the boats.

drivers, scoops, vents, and some very nice lexan windscreens.
for people with scale stuff, a simple vac former could save a fortune, and be easy to experiment.

martno1  could vac formed plastics be used as mold for fibreglass ? or would that be a no no

I think it would be a no no because of the heat given off during the curing process everything could get very wavey  :o,mind you looking at some boats they might have used that very process  {-).
I think for making small parts like you suggested a vac former would be a good idea, might have to build one for making small parts or get my lad to make me one  :}.
